Was this unreasonable?

Okay. Today I was on a plane to Ireland from the UK, where masks aren’t mandated. So, I got on, settled on and I didn’t have my mask. I got told that I need to put my mask on, I said sorry, I don’t have one. Any spares? They said they didn’t have any, so I left it and a couple of minutes later the attendant came over and told me that I need to wear my mask otherwise they’ll kick me off. I was extremely confused, explained I was happy to wear a mask but they’re not mandated and had no way of knowing I had to bring one, and there are no spares provided. So, I went around asking half of the plane for a mask, eventually got one. But I ended up arguing anyway. Conversation as follows.
Me: if you’re going to kick people off for not wearing masks, surely you should provide spares?
1: I wasn’t going to kick you off.
Me: The other one threaten to.
1: And she had every right to. You were refusing to wear a mask!
me: I had no access to one?
so. Was I unreasonable?

No. This is insanity and needs to end.

Discovereads · 01/05/2022 21:00

You have to check the airlines rules. So while Ireland and U.K. governments may not be mandating masks, the airline you’re flying on might be mandating them for all passengers.

I agree it’s annoying but it’s the world we live in now.

FoodieToo · 01/05/2022 21:03

Actually, I disagree. If you read the rules for either RyanAir or Aer Lingus they state you have to have a mask.
You didn't bring one so you are at fault ,surely ?

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 01/05/2022 21:03

I know Aer Lingus are still saying you need one, but I'm surprised they don't sell them for people who forget or didn't know.

Maybe. But, if someone’s mask string broke would they kick them off? They should have spares.

It was a rule, and I’m fine with that. But, If they’re going to kick them off surely they should have spares?

I flew recently on an airline where you were required to have a mask. The airlines webpage stated this and also said to bring enough spares to last your entire journey. So I don’t think they should be required to provide masks to passengers. It’s not like they’re saying you can’t fly unless you bring your own life jacket.

user1465156400 · 01/05/2022 21:30

They can also refuse to let you fly if you're dressed inappropriately. Should they carry a bunch of spare clothes to?

Airlines are making their rules quite clear, it's your responsibility to be prepared (& that includes spares).

Marblessolveeverything · 01/05/2022 21:33

It is up to passengers to come fully supplied.

The thing is, there’s no way we would’ve known either. They said they sent an email out the day before. Apologies if I don’t check my email everyday on holiday. It’s so easy to forget/lose your mask so they get rid of your whole journey for it?

It’s much easier to forget a mask than to accidentally put on a bikini and no underwear on in the morning

you could lose or forget your passport, should they get you a new one of those too?

Your responsibility to have what you need for the flight, not theirs. They even emailed you to remind you. yabvu

That was the first time they ever emailed. Also, you only have one passport, you have millions of masks

There ARE millions of masks, you however had NONE. Which was your fault.

Because it’s not mandated legally

I do think they should have spares just in case. But this is why I carry a mask with me everywhere because you just never know when you may have to wear one.

AndSoFinally · 01/05/2022 21:54

I'm surprised they don't sell masks. Airlines usually take any opportunity to fleece passengers for every little extra, they're missing a trick here, surely?! £10 per mask to a captive audience!

I thought the same

Unreasonable. The business is within their rights to send a customer back into the terminal to buy a mask & catch a later flight. Alternatively, If you purchased a refundable fare, they could refund you and you could choose to patronize a different carrier.
