Was this unreasonable?

Okay. Today I was on a plane to Ireland from the UK, where masks aren’t mandated. So, I got on, settled on and I didn’t have my mask. I got told that I need to put my mask on, I said sorry, I don’t have one. Any spares? They said they didn’t have any, so I left it and a couple of minutes later the attendant came over and told me that I need to wear my mask otherwise they’ll kick me off. I was extremely confused, explained I was happy to wear a mask but they’re not mandated and had no way of knowing I had to bring one, and there are no spares provided. So, I went around asking half of the plane for a mask, eventually got one. But I ended up arguing anyway. Conversation as follows.
Me: if you’re going to kick people off for not wearing masks, surely you should provide spares?
1: I wasn’t going to kick you off.
Me: The other one threaten to.
1: And she had every right to. You were refusing to wear a mask!
me: I had no access to one?
so. Was I unreasonable?

Was this Ryanair by any chance 🤔

Unreasonable. The business is within their rights to send a customer back into the terminal to buy a mask & catch a later flight. Alternatively, If you purchased a refundable fare, they could refund you and you could choose to patronize a different carrier.

There was no place to buy a mask in the terminal

Sorry, I think YABU. It's not the airlines responsibility to ensure you have a mask. Masks have been so common place for a couple of years now so you should always have one on you and spares if you're on holiday.

DrAddisonForbesMontgomery · 01/05/2022 22:23

Of course you are being unreasonable, it's not the airlines responsibility to make sure you have a mask or a spare mask in case it breaks. If it says on their website or the email they sent you they've fully informed you of what's required, its not their fault you didn't read it. I've also been in 4 different airports this month all of which sold masks, you could have picked them up in the airport before boarding.

user1471447863 · 01/05/2022 22:24

It's a bit stupid to not have a mask with you when travelling to different countries, through at least 2 airports and on a plane with 100+ other people. Even if you don't think you need it it's still something you should have in your bag these days 'just in case' - never mind that it would probably be a sensible thing to wear in crowded areas of airports/checkin/security/passport control/boarding/baggage claim queues and while on the plane surrounded by (inches away from) and being breathed on by who know who that have been god knows where in the past week. You might be allowed to do things now but it's not magically gone away because people are bored with it - still something like 1 in 25 people currently have covid so there was possibly 4 cases on your plane.

I'm surprised ryanair/airfungus (or even the money grabbing airports) don't offer to sell you one for £10

amicissimma · 01/05/2022 22:30

Ryanair say masks are mandatory on many of their website pages.

OTOH, I flew with BA, who weren't mandating masks on that flight, but they were handing out masks on boarding.

TheSnowyOwl · 01/05/2022 22:34

The airlines should have their specific rules on their website and I think it’s reasonable to expect individuals to be aware of them in the same way you are expected to be aware of local laws abroad and behave appropriately.

At the same time, I’m amazed the airline hadn’t started a massive profiteering racket by selling flimsy masks that then break and need replacing so more masks need to be purchased.

Runnerduck34 · 01/05/2022 22:35

Just booked with Ryanair had no.idea they were still insisting in masks, wasn't highlighted at any point during the booking process. They should make it really obvious if they expect you to wear one, highlight it during booking and check-in and yes they should provide spares now the rules have changed I rarely have one with me.
Thanks for the pre warning!

Because it’s not mandated legally

It’s common sense though, @slpin27 and it isn’t any airline’s responsibility to CYA.
You’re an adult. If you’re flying, the very first thing you should check is their mask policy and make sure you’re prepared if masks are required.
It isn’t rocket science, it’s basic, elementary passenger science.
Covid isn’t over, btw — not by a long shot — which is why it’s common sense. So what if masks are not “mandated legally?” Either is Covid, which is airborne. I repeat, common sense.
Your argument that the airline should’ve supplied you with a mask isn’t valid. It’s your responsibility and yours alone.
You should accept responsibility gracefully instead of making excuses and invalid arguments. You are an adult — young perhaps, but an adult all the same. Accepting responsibility is a hallmark, albeit humbling, part of being an adult.

Dinoboymama · 01/05/2022 22:47

Yabu it doesn't matter if it's not mandatory for the countries if the airlines state you need one you do and it's your responsibility to have it.

Also if an airline emails me on holiday I am checking it to make sure it's not a delay etc. Recently we got an email the day we were flying back to get to the airport earlier due to queues.

YANBU
I had a similar situation recently flying back from Luxembourg, masks mandatory in the shuttle taking us to the plane but they were happy for me to use my scarf as face covering. Then in the plane they were giving packs with mask, wipes etc. (Luxair, great airline!)

nocoolnamesleft · 01/05/2022 22:57

YABU. It was your responsibility to check. And only an idiot wouldn't be wearing a mask on a plane given the current rates and infectivity of Covid.

BritInUS1 · 01/05/2022 22:59

YABU

NoGoodUsernamee · 01/05/2022 23:03

Oh it’s all bollocks… you absolutely HAVE to wear a mask. But if you want to order a G&T and slowly slurp it over the course of 2 hours… well then you don’t have to wear a mask! 🙂🙂👍🏼

I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would go on a plane without a mask on!!

I was on easyJet flights late March and early April where lots of people weren't wearing masks. (They could of course all have been exempt. 🤔)

In response to the OP, I would have had a mask with me, but I don't think you're unreasonable to think the airline should have had a stock of them to sell (at extortionate prices).

This I find hard to believe. There was no pharmacy or newsagents in the terminal?

They really really don't

Fizzyfish · 01/05/2022 23:25

@NoGoodUsernamee exactly, all bollocks 🙄

Fizzyfish · 01/05/2022 23:27

@CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson OK, well that's convinced me otherwise!

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 01/05/2022 23:21

They really really don't

I particularly liked the story of the ITU doctor who ran a marathon in one to prove the point.

Fizzyfish · 02/05/2022 00:26

Nice little propaganda piece that 👍 maybe you should wear two just so you're extra protected 😉

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 02/05/2022 01:02

'The thing is, there’s no way we would’ve known either. They said they sent an email out the day before. Apologies if I don’t check my email everyday on holiday. It’s so easy to forget/lose your mask so they get rid of your whole journey for it?'

So it wasn't on their website? If it wasn't then mainly YANBU, if it was then YABU. I'm surprised the airline aren't selling any, but mainly for financial reasons. I'm also surprised there was nowhere selling them at the airport. That seems daft. I'd assume most would carry some masks to an airport though, so sorry, overall think YABU!

Stompythedinosaur · 02/05/2022 01:20

I think it is your responsibility to have a mask and to have checked the rules.

In the situation of a mask breaking, I would still think it is the responsibility of the individual to have planned for that eventuality.
