MIL names her cat after our son

Am I being unreasonable thinking it's very odd that my MIL named her kitten the same name as our son, her grandson?

OP posts:
MumtoEG · 02/05/2022 22:03

We did the opposite & named our son after our old cat 😂

Scoobydoobydo · 02/05/2022 22:09

Did you name your son Tibs?

mamabear715 · 02/05/2022 22:32

I must be one of the few who thinks your MIL is totally weird.. it's NOT 'just a name', it's your CHILD'S name..
As someone who has a name often used for pet dogs, it really pisses me off anyway. :-(

Some of the best advice I was ever given was ‘always take the best interpretation of other people’s behaviour’ - i.e. when there’s more than one way to interpret something someone’s said or done, don’t rush to take offence.

honest to god, I think this advice saved my marriage when we had small children. I just started presuming the best of DH (he always presumed the best of me in fairness to him) and life became immeasurably better.

Still find naming the cat after a grandson hilarious and couldn't imagine not saying something to my MIL if she did it.

Bilboard · 03/05/2022 02:01

Maybe she asked your child ideas for the cat's name.
And your child suggested it.
Only saying this because it is the kind of thing my children would have done when they were little.

CrunchyCarrot · 03/05/2022 06:44

I really hope your son's name isn't Fluffypants or Snuggles, OP! Grin

Maybe she'd been looking for a kitten for yonks and had his name already picked out. Then you come along and not only steal her son from her but also her KITTEN NAME! MIL took to AIBU, what with it being such a supportive, encouraging community and was advised that nobody owns a name.

😂

PeacockPartyTime · 03/05/2022 07:51

I would think that was hilarious. It’s the sort of thing my husband’s nana would do.

threatmatrix · 03/05/2022 08:58

Best comment.

Roo4u · 03/05/2022 09:26

@ssd im guessing dylan

Islandgirl68 · 03/05/2022 09:47

You are not unreasonable. I find it strange. But I don't have pets. I would not be happy if that happened. Makes it feel like pets are equal to humans, which of course they are not. You are right to question it.

VickyEadieofThigh · 03/05/2022 09:50

I think it's weird. We adopted a rescue dog whose name when we got her was the same as my 9 year old niece, so we changed it.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 03/05/2022 11:28

The cat must be quite miffed.

felixthemoggy · 03/05/2022 18:25

I don't see what the problem is, unless there is some ulterior motive of identity theft and your MIL is trying to get a credit card for the cat in your son's name 😂😂😂

Garfy0505 · 03/05/2022 18:40

We named our son after our cat 😂 very confusing few years!

Juststopamoment · 03/05/2022 19:17

I think it’s an odd thing to do and you are not being reasonable! Of all the names in the world she could have chosen she chose your son’s name so yes it’s very deliberate and out of order.

Mrssheppard18 · 03/05/2022 19:24

My auntie named her horse the same name as me. Just saying.

Morganrae1 · 03/05/2022 19:40

I have a dog named Dave, my brother is David. The dog was named before we had him. David is fine with it, in fact he thinks it's hilarious.

JackieLou · 03/05/2022 19:58

Yeah this is weird! Of all the names? Really?!

“oh great, Charlie/jenson/Annie has just sh** on the rug”

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 03/05/2022 20:20

Aw - that’s really sweet

balalake · 03/05/2022 20:22

I agree OP. Cats and dogs in my opinion should not have human names, though should be a name you can call out in public without feeling silly.

Notaordinarygirl · 03/05/2022 21:22

You think that's bad? My mum named my half brother, first name after my cousin, first middle name after my step brother and second middle name after my full brother. When I questioned her at the time she said she likes the names plus she us honouring my brother and step brother
(step brother no longer as she hot a divorce when half brother was 6 months old)

ssd · 03/05/2022 21:52

Ds had a pal whose first name was our surname. And the same pal had a dog whose name was dhs name.
Was confusing when he came round😂

Bangolads · 03/05/2022 22:07

Odd yes but your son will LOVE it.

justlliloleme · 03/05/2022 22:13

Tiddles is an odd name to call your son 😜
