MIL names her cat after our son

Am I being unreasonable thinking it's very odd that my MIL named her kitten the same name as our son, her grandson?

She's an oddbod. Stupid thing to do. I dont know why you didnt say anything. No doubt someone else will, the real world is different to the 'oh it's fine' on MN. Didnt your DH say anything?!

BruceAndNosh · 01/05/2022 03:37

That's what happens when you call your son Tiddles

NumberTheory · 01/05/2022 03:53

I would assume she did it because she loves her grandson and the association will make her feel good. Why would she need to ask you about it? She isn’t renaming your son or doing anything that can harm you or DS in any way.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 01/05/2022 04:17

Don't see the issue. It's convenient hot having to recall two distinct names, and maybe there wouldn't be such a global shortage if more people streamlined. Think of the number of valuable letters we could save if everyone in the UK just changed their name to 'Dave'.

SantiagoSky · 01/05/2022 04:22

Can you name one of your pets after her?

JKT007 · 01/05/2022 04:23

So, she announced it on FB. I havent actually spoken to her since because I'm just not sure what to say. On one hand, I'm like thinking, I dont want to say something I may regret & on the other hand, I'm like, this is fucking odd to me! I too would never name my pet after a family member & none of my friends or family have had this happen to them so I'm unsure how to broach the subject

OP posts:
SquirrelG · 01/05/2022 04:35

I would have laughed. Honestly, it's not worth this level of angst OP.

JKT007 · 01/05/2022 04:35

Without a doubt she loves my son. I never said she needed to ask me to use his name, a discussion with me about using his name would have been nice & gone a long way, whether or not she choose to use his name after our discussion would've been up to her. It's just very odd to me

OP posts:
ANUsernam · 01/05/2022 04:40

Did she definitely pick the name or did the kitten come with a name and she just hasn't changed it?

AzazaelsFury · 01/05/2022 04:42

I wouldn't do it but I have seen it happen before not named after them as such but given the same name. Wouldn't bother me.

JKT007 · 01/05/2022 04:43

There isnt any angst about it. Im simply just putting it out there asking if it is unreasonable that I find it very odd.

JKT007 · 01/05/2022 04:48

MIL chose the kittens name

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

romdowa · 01/05/2022 05:03

Comes across as weird to be honest. I'd have to say something

GrazingSheep · 01/05/2022 05:19

What does your dh think ?

Pamlar · 01/05/2022 05:26

I would find it strange and very annoying

lljkk · 01/05/2022 05:41

My mom named kittens after her grand-daughters. Nobody minded or objected.

twoandcooplease · 01/05/2022 05:51

I think it's odd too. Has no one commented on her post 'Sandra? Isn't your grandsons name the same?'
I know you've put off seeing her since but my response when she first brings it up/introduces would be to laugh and ask what the fuck?

NumberTheory · 01/05/2022 05:51

What sort of discussion are you envisioning? Do you just mean you wish she’d told you before she announced it on Facebook? Or is there some back and forth to be had that isn’t you trying to subtly indicate that you don’t want her to do it?

Hollywolly1 · 01/05/2022 06:06

Is this your first child? What age is your son,is he still a baby?.Did your mil name the kitten herself or have you sil's that gave her the name,I find it very strange and quite silly really and it says more about her.Are you sure you get along with her as well as you think you do,any under lying bitchiness for years that you just pass off.I think its not a cool thing to do

Chikapu · 01/05/2022 06:15

Is your son's name Mittens Von Fluffybutt?
I think it's seriously weird to call a kitten after your son, is he young enough to be confused by who she's talking to/calling inside/offering Dreamies to etc?

Clymene · 01/05/2022 06:16

Maybe she's done it so she doesn't get their names mixed up ?

My life would be a lot easier if my children and pets all had the same name. It's actually kind of genius and I'm annoyed I didn't think of it Grin

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 01/05/2022 06:18

I'd be giving her the side eye to be honest and would be calling her pet "the cat" forever more.

Regularsizedrudy · 01/05/2022 06:29

Margotshypotheticaldog · 01/05/2022 02:53

It's a bit odd. You should get a chinchilla and name it after her. After all, she doesn't own the name.

Please do this!

AllIgotforitwascankles · 01/05/2022 06:36

It’s fine, charmingly eccentric even. Obviously it’s been done because she loves your son. When the lad is old enough no doubt he will find it very funny that grans cat has the same name as him.
There used to be a bulldog that lived on my street which shared my name and I loved that as a little kid.

Im team MIL on this one and feel sorry for her that she’s probably going to be made to feel bad about what she thought of as something very good if a little odd). I would tell you to get over it and have a laugh at yourself for being troubled but the fact your posting about it on the internet looking for confirmation that MIL is in the wrong means that probably wouldn’t happen.
