OH never opens food packaging properly - he rips it to shreds. Stabs butter foil in the middle, the same with yogurt or cream. This morning, bag of catfood - resealable bag - ripped through the side... i want to scream.

You aren't being unreasonable but you may be lacking compassion for a shortcoming he can't help. Some people just don't get packaging. My otherwise faultless mother becomes an utter idiot when faced with any form of packet to open. I can't watch.

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 30/04/2022 21:49

Come on. Several of you have admitted to doing this (looking at you @FlibbertyGibbitt, @JudgeJ, @orangeisthenewpuce, @Butteryflakycrust83), but not one of you has come back to justify yourselves. WHY do you do it?

Because we can 🥳

FlibbertyGibbitt · 30/04/2022 21:59

blueshoes · 30/04/2022 21:56

Yeah, WHY?

And sorry been out doing Saturday night Aries stuff you know 🥳

Razbitso · 30/04/2022 22:14

I do all of these. I never mean to do the cheese thing but some times I am in the fridge and it looks so nice and then a just have a nibble. To be fair sometimes I break a chunk off as even I can see that tooth marks are off putting. Only me and dh eat cheese and he has sex with me so a few tooth marks don’t seem like a big deal.
the one that really hurts him is the manoeuvre that sees me slice just below those squeeze together plastic lines you get on some packets. Hate them myself and everything gets used up pretty quick in our place so they are pointless.

LeniGray · 30/04/2022 22:35

My dad used to be like this, used to drive me up the wall. Thankfully I no longer live with him, I moved out for my own sanity. The most irritating was putting an empty milk carton back in the fridge… just why, why, why!! 😡

TopCatsTopHat · 30/04/2022 22:44

This thread gave me chills and I'm appreciating my dh anew. It's like reading a horror story then closing the book with relief that it isn't real life. Still going to give me nightmares though. 🤣🤣🤣

Blinky21 · 30/04/2022 22:48

This is me, I cannot for the life of me open packets correctly to the point that I have wondered if it's an actual thing where that part of some people's brains doesn't work like others. My husband calls me the raccoon

missb10 · 30/04/2022 22:51

Sounds like divorce for any reason. You can't blame the poor bloke for not being able to open packages properly, after all he is a man. My Dad was very intelligent, but give him a pack of sandwiches in a cardboard carton and he hadn't a clue. I always had to open it for him. My Mum isn't much better, having learned (?) from him. Can't say that I always open packaging correctly though. I stab cheese packaging at the end with a small knife, I try to pull apart the seals of cereals, pasta, rice, etc. but usually end up tearing the packaging and everything falls out! Also, have you noticed the the "resealable" packs aren't actually resealable? That's why we have "cereal storer" containers!

You would be the nightmare inconsiderate housemate and the would-be spouse that living together for a stint would screen out. Bet that but for these foibles, you must be so lovable otherwise.

IsabelHerna · 30/04/2022 23:52

Oh no that's so annoying!

This! Is he opening them with his teeth? Shock

CatsArePeople · 29/04/2022 12:39

ok, i can understand that some packaging can be shitty, an using scissors is too much to ask... but what's the excuse to stab butter?

Butter is so difficult to open (I wrestled for five minutes with a packet today) and so impossible to slide onto a knife thst the only option is a massive stab. Or lurpax

the80sweregreat · 29/04/2022 13:25

I'm going to stick up for the package tearers of the world because some packages and ' peel here ' labels and what not on some goods and food items seem to need industrial sized tools to get them open , not just normal kitchen scissors. 'Peel here' , only on a good day.
I bought a lip balm and it was almost impossible to get out of its wrapping and away from the plastic bit and the cardboard it was on .
You need precision to open the resealable bags of things , if your in a hurry it can be hard going to get it just right so it zips up again.
It can all be daunting if your not in the right frame of mind for it all

Off topic but these cardboard / plastic spawn of the devil packaging things are best opened with a tin opener.

Sorry I have not read the full thread but my brother did this when we both lived at home, he is also a putter back of empty boxes intot he freezer, and a not quite closing the freezer door type.

Ddot · 01/05/2022 07:36

Butter dish, Tupperware, biscuit tin, flip top bottles, cat tin, all must be bought to keep your sanity

I have always had great difficulty opening anything and this has got worse now I have arthritis in my hands so I just open things any way I can. For instance, if I don't stab yoghurts the only way I can get the lid off is with my teeth. I'm also a naturally very messy person so I don't even see my way of getting into things as an issue. But I know, because I've been told, that it is indeed a problem Wink

Ireolu · 01/05/2022 08:34

We all have our quirks. In my relationship I am the inpatient need to get into a packet now! one. So I can't be trusted to open cereal, large crisp bags, large coffee bean bags neatly. Granted I don't half eat cheese and leave bite marks for someone else to find. If I know how I open a particular thing will irritate DH I get him to come open it.

He leaves a mess in the kitchen everytime he cooks and never puts wrappers in bins If something is finished. Will typically find it on the side. Then have to tidy away. We've learnt to accept each others annoying habits. Neither of us r perfect :)

Ineke · 01/05/2022 08:42

Training mine at the moment. Constant repeat the same thing, one day it may get through, I have seen some improvement, I think it’s a lack of patience ultimately.

Mandyjack · 01/05/2022 10:42

If I get parcels my DH rips the packaging making it difficult if I need to return the item. I've banned him from opening them now!

MrsPenguinsPet · 01/05/2022 10:59

This would and does drive me nut too. But by divorce? Surely you would have known this before you got married, so why did you marry knowing this could be such a big problem?

Fyi, I make sure I open stuff first by opening the next packed of whatever Before the current one in use runs out.

Scottsy100 · 01/05/2022 12:15

Just tell him to stop being a twat and show hi how to do things properly like you would a child, can’t believe as women we have to put up with this shit

AlbertaAnnie · 01/05/2022 12:29

Not a raccoon, a honey badger! Don't be misled by the cute name.

KittenKong · 01/05/2022 12:31

You should see how mine opens envelopes. Shreds then from the middle. I mean - why???
