What the fuck have they done to it?!

I really really wanted to enjoy it, huge fan of Agatha Christie, love French and Saunders.

From the start it's just too....... Sexy?.... For a Poirot?

None of it felt right.

I'm gonna try again later because I had to turn it off after about half an hour......but jesus.

Yanbu op

Saw it in the cinema and David Suchet IS Poirot, so what was this?!

Plot rewrites didn’t work

Some of the bits not played for laughs made me want to laugh eg the French and Saunders scenes.

It was pretty bad

SoggyPaper · 18/04/2022 22:13

I didn’t understand how he could grow the moustache on the scar tissue either. That wasn’t an injury you’d be hiding with a bit of well placed facial hair.

I’m still perplexed by the weird sexy dancing. There was a bit where she bent over and he thrust his hips at her. I’m not sure that move would ever have been acceptable in public.

Giraffesandbottoms · 18/04/2022 22:17

The other thing is there’s 0 scarring visible where there should be on his cheeks around the moustache.

SoggyPaper · 18/04/2022 22:23

Yes. At the end where he’s shaved it off much more, it seems to have healed far better than it possibly could have.

SoggyPaper · 18/04/2022 22:24

I don’t think that’s much of a spoiler. The moustache isn’t a big plot point. 🤣

Giraffesandbottoms · 18/04/2022 22:52

I don’t understand what’s happened with French and Saunders and the bedsheets either I promise I’m not thick I just don’t understand what anyone is saying

Capturetotalelotion · 18/04/2022 22:58

I liked it. Blush

Arucanafeather · 18/04/2022 22:59

@WimpoleHat

I digress for a moment, but would fully recommend the Mousetrap on stage for any fans of Christie in her true form. They often have ticket deals on this too.
We’ve just been to see it! Loved every second. Fab-u-lous Smile

Basically, the sheets mean one of the beds was unused, which means the two women were sharing a bed, which means they are in a relationship rather than just friends as they pretend.

@Talia99

Thank you!!!!

Giraffesandbottoms · 18/04/2022 23:04

@SoggyPaper 😃

88sausagefactory88 · 18/04/2022 23:07

Agreed !

Character dies and it’s more important that Keneth is miserable about it than the character’s mother !

Fuck that !

CharityShopChic · 18/04/2022 23:21

AFAIK none of the actors went anywhere more exotic than Surrey. The initial plan was to film in Egypt/Morocco but security concerns and covid put paid to that.

So they filmed a few aerial landscape shots with drones and did the rest with CGI in a warehouse. The whole boat was a set. I think it was Dawn French I saw speaking about it, said she was disappointed to miss out on a trip overseas.

Giraffesandbottoms · 18/04/2022 23:24

Was the opening scene just there so Kenneth Branagh could see himself as a young man again using special effects?

@CharityShopChic

Makes sense! I wondered why it looked totally fake

Sunshinegirl82 · 18/04/2022 23:35

I think there should be some sort of law that prohibits anyone other than David Suchet from playing Poirot. He just IS Poirot, there is nowhere for anyone else to go with it and I don't think they should try.

Clarinet1 · 19/04/2022 00:04

Another big Christie fan here! Haven’t seen any of the Branagh ones yet and, judging by this thread, I’m not sure I want to! I love both the other versions of DOTN, with a special mention for Angela Lansbury as Salome Otterbourne - nobody does a dirty old lady like her! Also, very fond of the Sidney Lumet version of Murder on the Orient Express with Albert Finney as Poirot - what a cast!

Clarinet1 · 19/04/2022 00:05

Oops - dotty old lady, not dirty!

plominoagain · 19/04/2022 00:40

I’ve been banned from watching it by DH , after he spent an evening listening to me shouting at the TV about Branagh’s first appalling attempt .

I love Christie . I collect her first editions . My retirement treat to myself is going to be a trip on the Orient express followed by a Nile cruise . But this travesty isn’t Christie. Just make the same film , change the names , and stop trading on Dame Agatha’s name for box office cash.

Yes , because that is what he looked like in his 20s but with different hair, he is a man not without ego...

"Nymphomaniacal Baboons" ...

I think you might have been accidentally right the first time. 🤦‍♀️😹

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 19/04/2022 06:51

I loved the dancing! The rest not so much, it was just dull and Gal Gadot's character was super annoying.

UserError012345 · 19/04/2022 07:00

I'm an Agatha Christie fan & have watched al previous TV versions of Poirot

On its own merit, I loved the film. I'm went to the cinema to see and I'm going to watch on Disney + today.

Yeah Branagh is no Poirot but I did love this version.

The only negative for me was Branagh running at the end. Poirot does not run!!!

ExcaliburBaby · 19/04/2022 07:06

I love Poirot and Kenneth Branagh and really enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express. While I did enjoy watching this at the cinema - I didn’t love it. Too much cgi and I just couldn’t get past Armie Hammer and the ick feeling from all his scenes (esp the gropy ‘sexy’ ones) although that situation isn’t the films fault and i do feel sorry for them having to deal with the fallout. Didn’t like the boat either - too shiny and flashy. I’d be surprised if they made another one but I’d watch it if they did.

ExcaliburBaby · 19/04/2022 07:12

@Clymene

I loathe Branagh. His ego walks onto set about 10 minutes before his body in every single film he's in. There's a reason he doesn't have a successful film career
I’m not sure this is strictly accurate. He works consistently both in front of and behind the camera and has just won an Oscar!!

I am a fan though and his glorious version of Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favourite films.

Iwasfeelingepic · 19/04/2022 07:25

I wasn't overly impressed with Death on the Orient Express, so I am in no rush to watch this. I will have the Evans one.
David Suchet was the best Poirot for me.
I would love to see another remake of Then there were none, it is my favourite Christie book and the only book that has genuinely left me feeling a bit scared. Though if they did remake it, I'd be worried they will ruin it.
