What the fuck have they done to it?!

I really really wanted to enjoy it, huge fan of Agatha Christie, love French and Saunders.

From the start it's just too....... Sexy?.... For a Poirot?

None of it felt right.

I'm gonna try again later because I had to turn it off after about half an hour......but jesus.

@honeylulu

I didn't even recognise Russell Brand as the doctor though!
I was surprised by him too!
Tupperwarelid · 18/04/2022 19:49

I thought it was just me! I tried to watch it when I was off work with Covid and couldn’t get into it. Thought it was because I was ill but it appears not.

Pericombobulations · 18/04/2022 19:54

We watched this last night as also had highish hopes as love the story but wasnt a patch on the Ustinov version which I love.

Didnt like the storyline changes either, really uneccessary.

The dancing like many things in the movie were not in keeping with the timeline either.

Like many films, it takes a lot of liberties with geography too.

Definitely a kenneth brannagh glorification. He directs films he isnt in a lot better, and acts better in films he doesnt direct. The two dont work together.

IntergalacticChrist · 18/04/2022 20:02

I thought it was ok - I haven't read the book though. I went into it with very low expectations having watched murder on the orient express and thinking it was absolutely abysmalm. That probably helped!

I do agree that if it had just been a glossy whodunnit caper it would have been better. It was the shoehorning of an inconvincing Poirot into it that ruined it

IntergalacticChrist · 18/04/2022 20:02

*unconvincing

lemongreentea · 18/04/2022 20:09

I normally love french and saunders, together and separately they are brillant but they looked so out of place in this.

The 3 main characters all looked out of place in their own way, especially the male lead. I think with a trio of different actors/actresses it would have worked better.

I still cant forgive KB for his affair with HBC even though Emma Thompson went on to meet her lovely dashing husband. Greg Wise is such an upgrade.

Whingasaurus · 18/04/2022 20:10

Just trying to watch this so much unnecessary shite with the grinding, socialism and sex references but I'm persevering for the dresses and scenery. Russel Brand is the best thing in it so far.

Talia99 · 18/04/2022 20:31

Part of the problem is that they recut it to exclude Armie Hamer as much as possible which makes the whole thing very disjointed. I saw a review which was boggled at the sexy dancing scene on the basis that rather than showing off the relationship, Jackie could have been dancing with anyone because you barely saw her partner’s face. It meant the whole film was off from the start.

If anyone wants to watch it and has Tesco vouchers, you can currently get 6 months Disney+ for £8 in vouchers on the Clubcard website.

SoggyPaper · 18/04/2022 20:36

@RetrainRetrain

Damn, I really want to see how bad it is (the Suchet versions are perfect to me) but it's not showing for me on netflix
It’s on Disney+
SoggyPaper · 18/04/2022 20:38

I can’t help but think that ‘Russell brand is the best thing in it’ is the epitome of damning with faint praise. 🤣🤣

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/04/2022 20:39

I wasn't keen on it. Weird accents, what on earth was going on with Armie Hammer's teeth and some shite acting.

CharityShopChic · 18/04/2022 20:43

Awful, isn't it. Gal Gadot is just dreadful.

The Peter Ustinov version is 100 times better.

Clymene · 18/04/2022 20:47

I loathe Branagh. His ego walks onto set about 10 minutes before his body in every single film he's in. There's a reason he doesn't have a successful film career

Crackercrazy · 18/04/2022 20:58

@Catkitkat

Agree with OP. Why change the story? Why not make something else instead of a poor remake of this
I totally agree. And call it something else too. I say this on every Christie thread, it winds me up so much!
nosyupnorth · 18/04/2022 20:58

I went in with no expectations and enjoyed it, watched with my mum who was a previous agatha christie fan and found some of the changes made annoying. Even not being familiar with the original/prior adaptations, I could tell that there were parts that had been a little clunkily modernised, it's definitely not one for the purists. But then, if you like a prior adaptation so much that you think this version should be exactly like that, go watch the old movie instead - it's good to have varied and creative takes on old stories.

Giraffesandbottoms · 18/04/2022 20:59

Could someone please explain how poirot was able to grow a moustache over all the scar tissue?

Whingasaurus · 18/04/2022 21:00

My dh commented on how awful Gadot's acting was and I said hopefully she won't be in it for long. Still too long is his verdict and now I'm not allowed to pick a film for a month. We are also watching NeXt on Disney and that's superb so please save yourselves whilst there's time and jump to that.

MajesticWhine · 18/04/2022 21:03

I adore the 1978 version, and this wasn't as good, however I still quite enjoyed it.

Tush.

'My Life in Theatre aged 28' can do no wrong in my eyes. 😍

over2021 · 18/04/2022 21:11

I hated it (big AC fan and love David Suchet). DH really enjoyed it (not an AC fan and started watching it under duress)

PortiaFimbriata · 18/04/2022 21:36

@Giraffesandbottoms

Could someone please explain how poirot was able to grow a moustache over all the scar tissue?
Yes I was bugged by that as well: no way you'd be able to grow such a symmetrical moustache over such a major scar.
Giraffesandbottoms · 18/04/2022 21:52

@PortiaFimbriata

Glad it’s not just me. I’m
Currently watching and I also can’t understand wtf he is talking about with his ex. What happened to her?

DH calls Kenneth Branagh “write the theme
Tune sing the theme
Tune”
Because he seems to enjoy producing, directing, writing and starring in all his own films 😃

ForcedOut123 · 18/04/2022 21:58

Totally agree OP. Poor casting and the original film was carried by Mia Farrow’s neurosis which was completely lacking in this remake. Useless!

VestaTilley · 18/04/2022 21:59

Yanbu. If it’s not Peter Ustinov, David Suchet or Joan Hickson I don’t want to know!
