What the fuck have they done to it?!

I really really wanted to enjoy it, huge fan of Agatha Christie, love French and Saunders.

From the start it's just too....... Sexy?.... For a Poirot?

None of it felt right.

I'm gonna try again later because I had to turn it off after about half an hour......but jesus.

I didn't even recognise Russell Brand as the doctor though!

WimpoleHat · 18/04/2022 18:14

Also, the bit about the war and Catherine are they Agatha Christie or were those parts just for the film??

Film only. Not in the book at all.

SilentBob · 18/04/2022 18:15

Oh I had wiped this shitfest of a film from my memory until now.

I adored Peter Ustinov, David Suchet was sublime. Brannagh? Absolutely not. What a crock of crap this film is. Gadot and Hammer are unwatchable, Brannagh is performing for one (his ego) and they missed out so much of the story that nothing made any sense.

Arucanafeather · 18/04/2022 18:15

It lost the essence of Agatha Christie’s skilled insight into personalities for me. Total disappointment - like the Miss marple’s where they changed who did the murder Confused

Floralnomad · 18/04/2022 18:16

We lasted about 30 minutes before we switched off , although I’d happily have switched off after the initial dance scene ! The music was absolutely dreadful , the backstory to Poirots moustache was ridiculous and why keep bringing in new characters . Whoever gives permission for these dire adaptations needs a good talking to .

@WimpoleHat I thought so I thought I was going mad and not remembering them thank you

Allywill · 18/04/2022 18:18

Netflix? It’s not showing on mine? Are you UK?

WimpoleHat · 18/04/2022 18:18

I digress for a moment, but would fully recommend the Mousetrap on stage for any fans of Christie in her true form. They often have ticket deals on this too.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 18/04/2022 18:19

I agree about the loss of character depth as well.
So glad I'm not the only one!

I'm on the fence (am a huge Agatha Christie fan, and have seen pretty much every adaptation). I hated the odd over the top sex references - that just seemed unnecessary, and I think really weakened the story. However, the soundtrack was fantastic, I loved the new Rosalie Otterbourne, and actually liked a couple of the new "twists". I think remaking it with a few tweaks is fine, as there is no way to better the previous versions, so you need to add something new!

PandoraP
Is it on Netflix?

Yep Netflix

Are you in the UK? Im searching on Netflix but can't find it

WimpoleHat · 18/04/2022 18:20

@CP191989 I remember there being some mention of a pre war love in one of the other Poirot books (though unhelpfully can’t remember which one), but nothing as over dramatic as that.

RonObvious · 18/04/2022 18:21

It's on Disney+.

Ooh when I can afford this will give it a go, thanks for the recommendation.

I’ve never read an Agatha Christie book or seen any Poirot shows/films but thought it was terrible. Over glossy, no substance, awful music, cringey writing. Definitely a vanity project.

Did it come out before Armie Hammers sexual assault allegations? Surprised to see him in something quite recent.

WimpoleHat · 18/04/2022 18:22

I was so disappointed I immediately cleansed myself by watching the Peter Ustinov version

@Ionlydomassiveones We did the same. But I love, love, love the idea of “cleansing”!

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 18/04/2022 18:23

Oh shit sorry Disney!!
Get confused between all the bloody streaming services! Blush

No Catherine in the book. Poirot only ever had eyes for one woman: Vera Rosokoff Also not in the book: Bouc Lesbian French and Saunders Brown Uncle Andrew Ridiculous Bouc Rosalie love affair Linnet having an old lover who was also a doctor

It's like they just wrote an entirely different script.

Oh no! I don't have Disney +. I was all excited for 5 mins Grin

It's on prime, but you have to pay £13.99 and I'm not paying if it's crappy

RonObvious · 18/04/2022 18:26

And there was me trying to avoid any spoilers. Grin

Might have to "cleanse" as well!!

I really wanted to enjoy it, French and Saunders being in it really appealed to me, but bloody hell!

Was just ranting at DH that the WHOLE POINT was that Christie invented him based on some Belgian refugees she met in the war so he was never actually serving! Branagh can’t help but put his ego front and centre, it’s like he’s SO CLOSE to being brilliant if he could just get himself out of frame. Haven’t watched past the dance scene yet as was horrified that the Sex Education girl started talking about shagging and I had it on with a 9 year old child as had assumed from having read it it would be fine! Had to turn it off!

BUT Hugh Laurie is producing Why Didn’t They Ask Evans which should be good!

Sharrowgirl · 18/04/2022 18:30

Did it come out before Armie Hammers sexual assault allegations? Surprised to see him in something quite recent.

It was made before the allegations but the release was delayed for a few years because of Covid. I think it was difficult for the studio to know what to do because of it, and watching it, I think they edited as much of him out as they could. Which did not help with the plot and character development.

WimpoleHat · 18/04/2022 18:32

The massive Tiffany product placement was also bloody ridiculous. (The cinema should that Tiffany “Moon River” trailer at least twice beforehand and then the same necklace was in the film.) In the book, it was pearls. This was a) much more “U”, b) much more believable because she wore them all the time and c) was a crucial part of the storyline (was she murdered for them, were they fake, the kleptomaniac Mrs van Schyler (sp?) etc.
