Do you think this is a lot of alcohol?

I finally submitted my dissertation today. Daughter is at her dads so went and got a bottle of wine at the shop to celebrate/relax after a stressful few months writing and a stressful year researching.

I finished the bottle of wine then had dinner and now just chilling watching tv.

My mum phoned and asked what I had done this evening so I said and she was utterly appalled at me finishing a bottle of wine. Did I feel tipsy? Yes. Did I feel drunk? No. Did I do anything out of the ordinary? No.

So what's the issue? I drink maybe 3 times a month and I don't think one bottle is a copious amount. AIBU?

@LynetteScavo

One bottle of wine in one go is a lot. I would feel awful the next day. I thought I was a hardened drinker but maybe not, going by other posts here.

I would drink half a bottle four times a week, with a meal, so over a lifetime that's more alcohol, but I think a bottle in one go is a binge.

But the OP rarely drinks and you’re drinking regularly drinking twice she has every single week!

Drinking 4 nights a week out of 7 is loads, I’d be more concerned about that than regular drinking than a one off.

@gingerhills

Which of those two are you *@MurmuratingStarling*? Grin
Grin Too busy slugging the last of my first bottle of wine to tell you @gingerhills!

Hope you enjoyed your wine & congratulations.

I think this is one of the few 'alcohol' threads on MN where I have witnessed people admitting to partaking in a tipple or three.
Most of the time these threads bring out the Betty Ford reps.

Tigofigo · 18/04/2022 14:31

I think it's a lot, especially to drink by yourself, I'd be hammered drinking that on an empty stomach (but most of my friends wouldn't be).

Overall, drinking 3 bottles of wine a month isn't a crazy amount. Better for you to drink it over maybe 10 nights though rather than 3.

Am I appalled? No. I'm not your mum though!

I reckon that in 20 years' time, the normalisation of drinking a lot in this era will be seen as horrific, in the same way it was socially acceptable to smoke everywhere in the 70s.

Tigofigo · 18/04/2022 14:35

You’d feel the same the following day whether you drank it over an evening or one glass straight after the other, how quickly you drink doesn’t change the volume or how you’d feel the next day.

Bollocks! It's the concentration of alcohol that makes the difference. High concentration in blood stream = pissed, dizzy, feeling sick. Also if you drink slowly you're more likely to incorporate food and water.

ManateeFair · 18/04/2022 14:39

A bottle of wine is three 250ml glasses - so three ‘large’ glasses by pub/restaurant standards. Not a big deal over the course of an evening, in my opinion (or in the opinion of anyone I know in real life). I wouldn’t drink a bottle every night - most nights I don’t drink anything; I’m not a frequent drinker - but I wouldn’t even blink at it now and again. I’d be a bit tipsy but not blind drunk.

I have a lot of experience of being around alcoholics and trust me, a bottle of wine three times a month is unlikely to be even close to any kind of problem. Wine isn’t particularly healthy, obviously, but nor are lots of things we all enjoy, and I really wouldn’t worry about it.

Mumsnet is full of people who are endlessly prissy and judgy about alcohol consumption, sugar intake, late nights, caffeine and a million other things most people aren’t bothered by.

I don't know. We've just bumped into a 20 year old who's just trained as a solicitor and he was saying he enjoys a good drink at the weekend. My DSD and her friends in their 20's do too.

BrightOrangeOrange · 18/04/2022 16:02

20 something year old solicitor not a 20 year old.

Congratulations on submitting your thesis.

Anyone who considers one bottle of wine after such a big milestone is possibly just not aware of about how much effort goes into such a submission and/or the magnitude of the event.

Although a bottle of wine is around ten units of alcohol so not ideal in one go, one bottle per submission of a dissertation is entirely reasonable.

Does your mother understand anything about academic life? Or even just your life.

Wouldn't it be great if parents only commented on areas where they have useful knowledge?

I used to be able to drink a bottle of some sort of white wine,in a shortish time, but not red wine,, but only after I had eaten some decent food earlier., I could not do it now, as older, and have gone off alcohol somewhat.

Jazzyjeffery · 18/04/2022 16:57

Not true for me. A whole bottle of wine in one go, before dinner... I would feel drunk and feel rough the next day.

A whole bottle of wine, over a 2/3 hours with food - I'd be merry and fine the next day.

How fast I drink, and what I've eaten, has a big impact on how drunk I feel and on my hangovers.

SunshineAddict · 18/04/2022 17:03

It's objectively a lot at one sitting.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 18/04/2022 17:04

A bottle of wine in one evening would have me vomiting. DH could easily drink that (and more) and be absolutely fine the next day.

So for me, yes, it's way too much - for DH not so much.

Forgotthespuds · 18/04/2022 17:19

@EvenPhilip - I was between 4 of us. Ended up being 3 &a bit more bottles over a couple of hours and some port later in the evening. Noone had to drive anywhere & we're not in charge of very young kids we just had a big breakfast & took the dogs for a good walk
Feeling fresh as a daisy

killwithkindness · 18/04/2022 17:20

One bottle of wine is fine I think! I've done it many a times and would love to do it tonight if I wasn't pregnant haha! Congrats on your dissertation 😘

Cherryblossoms85 · 18/04/2022 17:22

I'd be throwing up. But if you don't do it regularly I guess it's not really an issue. Just surprised you have that tolerance with irregular consumption.

pinacollama · 18/04/2022 17:24

I’d be doing the same! Congratulations 🥳

Thanks for answering that without thinking I was being a judgy cow. Smile
It's interesting to see how others compare to me and my dh/ guests on occasion.

EvenPhilip · 18/04/2022 17:28

In all this talk of alcohol I forgot to congratulate the OP on the submission of her work!
Well done OP 🍷

NumberTheory · 18/04/2022 18:28

@doggiescats

Your reading comprehension needs some work.
