Do you think this is a lot of alcohol?

I finally submitted my dissertation today. Daughter is at her dads so went and got a bottle of wine at the shop to celebrate/relax after a stressful few months writing and a stressful year researching.

I finished the bottle of wine then had dinner and now just chilling watching tv.

My mum phoned and asked what I had done this evening so I said and she was utterly appalled at me finishing a bottle of wine. Did I feel tipsy? Yes. Did I feel drunk? No. Did I do anything out of the ordinary? No.

So what's the issue? I drink maybe 3 times a month and I don't think one bottle is a copious amount. AIBU?

It's not a lot, no. I drink about 10 double spirit and mixers most Fridays over the course of about 6 hours. Not all strong ones, sometimes things like Archers or Baileys which aren't a very high %. I don't get drunk.

WakeyCakeyHeart · 17/04/2022 21:22

Fine if it's not every day topped up with shots :-) I've done a bottle of champagne today just because:-)

VyeBrator · 17/04/2022 21:23

It would be a lot for me but it's not a lot for you.

I don't see the problem.

Nelliephant1 · 17/04/2022 21:26

That's a lot of alcohol!!

doggiescats · 17/04/2022 21:27

Congratulations on finishing your dissertation…one bottle of wine is what you deserve!! Just eat some carbs before bed and lots of water.X

CatWoman12345 · 17/04/2022 21:31

I occasionally drink a whole bottle of wine too - YANBU.
It’s 3 large glasses which is typical when at the pub, or a social event. It’s not as if you followed it with a few shots and a tequila (did you ?).

I’d pay for it later mind with a poor night’s sleep and a rough morning, otherwise I’d do it more often !

latetothefisting · 17/04/2022 21:32

@RewildingAmbridge

Would she have said the same if you'd gone to the pub to celebrate with friends and had 3 glasses of wine (large ones) ? It's the same amount of wine, but she's judging you because you drank it at home in your own. You've submitted your dissertation, stuff her, do whatever you like to celebrate/relax!
I thought the same. It's weird but a bottle of wine "sounds" like a lot, but 3 large glasses of wine is exactly the same. 3 pints is about the same amount of alcoholic units and I wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone drinking either of those over a few hours.

Congratulations on your dissertation!

Wiredforsound · 17/04/2022 21:33

Congratulations OP. Handing in your dissertation is a huge achievement and I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your celebration 🎉

greenlynx · 17/04/2022 21:34

A bottle in one go does sound a bit too much for me, I would rather do half and half next day.
3 bottles per month is ok.

Furrbabymama87 · 17/04/2022 21:41

I don't think it's a lot. I do it at least once a week. During the week I might have the odd glass, weekends I'll finish a bottle easily.

ChampagneJustBecause · 17/04/2022 21:41

You don’t have a drink problem - you have a miserable mother problem.

Open another bottle and well done you !

Theimpossiblegirl · 17/04/2022 21:43

Congratulations on finishing your dissertation.
Don't let people make you feel bad for celebrating with a bottle of wine. Sometimes I feel tipsy after a glass and sometimes I can drink a bottle and feel fine. Just don't operate heavy machinery or go for a drive!
Wine

AliceW89 · 17/04/2022 21:45

It’d floor me. But I wouldn’t be remotely ‘appalled’ at someone else for drinking a bottle of wine as a one off to celebrate.

TimetoPour · 17/04/2022 21:45

Congratulations OP!

One bottle of wine is enough to have many mums netters clutching their pearls. Realistically, 1 bottle drunk over a period of time with a meal is sod all. I have just finished a bottle myself- that I opened at 2pm to have with lunch. 3 large glasses over an 8 hour period does not make an alcoholic!

MyCommentWasDeleted · 17/04/2022 21:50

Totally fine - just finished my second

LondonQueen · 17/04/2022 21:51

I have been known to drink a bottle a night!

Sandrine1982 · 17/04/2022 21:55

Depends... did you finish the bottle in half an hour? Or in 3 hours? Xx

Gilesgoesformiles · 17/04/2022 21:59

3 bottles per month is ok

Op how does hearing someone say this - when you’ve no idea who they are - make you feel? Who cares what this person thinks? Who cares if they approve of your 3 bottles of wine a month?! You have no idea who they are or what they’re like. Build more confidence in your own decisions

ImInStealthMode · 17/04/2022 22:13

Genuine question for those to whom a whole bottle is horrifying; if you're at something like a wedding or a BBQ or a night out where drinks are flowing, do you genuinely make one or two glasses last the whole time? Or have one glass and then swap to soft drinks until you go home?

I can fairly easy get through a bottle in an evening without too much ill-effect the next day but if I was at a lengthy event that could easily be a bottle and a half or two. I'm by no means an alcoholic or regular binge drinker, but 1 large glass of wine an hour over 6 hours at a wedding wouldn't floor me (despite equating to 2 bottles).

Riverlee · 17/04/2022 22:13

How long did you drink the wine over? In the evening - a lot. From midday onwards - not so bad as a one off, but not good if done regularly.

Well done on finishing your dissertation.

2pinkginsplease · 17/04/2022 22:15

A bottle of wine is 3 large glasses of wine.

I don’t see a problem with that .

Everything in moderation.

EyePeeEh · 17/04/2022 22:21

A bottle of wine is around 10 units. More than 6 units (for a woman) = binge drinking.

In that context, yes it is a lot, but as an occasional indulgence I see little harm in it.

Honestly, while that’s more than I’d drink in a single night, if you’re only drinking 3 times per month then you have a far better relationship with alcohol than I do, so I promise I’m not trying to get on a high horse!

Ignoring the 'horrifying' bit (because why would other people's drinking habits horrify me?)

I tend to drink weak white wine spritzers and would probably have about 3, before switching to soft drinks.

I like alcohol but I equally like soft drinks too and don't particularly like feeling anything other than very slightly tipsy.

knittingaddict · 17/04/2022 22:45

I drink wine with my evening meal most nights. Half a bottle is my absolute limit. Any more and I don't feel good. A bottle is a lot, but if you're not doing it regularly then you're probably drinking less than me. Who am I to judge.

elidelochanthefirst · 17/04/2022 22:48

It's a lot for me but I don't drink anymore.

When i was 20 I could drink this but I would feel drunk.
