Do you think this is a lot of alcohol?

I finally submitted my dissertation today. Daughter is at her dads so went and got a bottle of wine at the shop to celebrate/relax after a stressful few months writing and a stressful year researching.

I finished the bottle of wine then had dinner and now just chilling watching tv.

My mum phoned and asked what I had done this evening so I said and she was utterly appalled at me finishing a bottle of wine. Did I feel tipsy? Yes. Did I feel drunk? No. Did I do anything out of the ordinary? No.

So what's the issue? I drink maybe 3 times a month and I don't think one bottle is a copious amount. AIBU?

That’s around 5 glasses of wine so I’d say that’s a lot of alcohol. Especially as you were just drinking on your own.

ZenNudist · 18/04/2022 09:02

Don't ask this on mumsnet you will get lots of people who can only manage the one glass at Christmas only. Meanwhile drinking a bottle to yourself is perfectly doable if done rarely.

For me half a bottle is enough and still feel rough the next day. We all metabolise alcohol diffently. I wouldn't be shocked if a friend drank a whole bottle to themselves of an evening.

Just keep to an infrequent treat.

knowinglesseveryday · 18/04/2022 09:22

I've done it but it makes me physically sick. Half is enough. I do a quarter these days.

anotherbrewplease · 18/04/2022 09:26

A full bottle of wine on your own? Yeah - it’s too much.

Just because it doesn’t make you sick doesn’t mean it isn’t harming your body.

notanothertakeaway · 18/04/2022 09:28

A whole bottle of wine before dinner sounds quite a lot

I'll occasionally drink most of a bottle over a whole evening.i don't feel terrible the next day, but not brilliant

FluffyFlower · 18/04/2022 09:39

The whole bottle in one go is a lot and would knock me off for a couple of days but then I rarely do more than a glass a week etc. But, if it was just a one off and you felt ok, perhaps don't overthink it and don't worry!
If it becomes a habit though, then yes it is a bit of problem, health-wise.

longwayoff · 18/04/2022 09:58

I don't drink but that sounds OK. Congratulations on finishing your dissertation, definitely worth celebrating. Don't do any corrections after the wine though.WineSmile

That's a lot of alcohol to drink in one go. Don't understand how you're not drunk if you're not a regular drinker

Snowiscold · 18/04/2022 10:04

That’s a lot in one go, yes.

Nah it’s three large glasses, it’s really not that much.

I’d easily drink three large glasses of wine and barely feel it.

It’s three large glasses, it’s not like drinking a bottle of vodka.

You’d feel the same the following day whether you drank it over an evening or one glass straight after the other, how quickly you drink doesn’t change the volume or how you’d feel the next day.
notanothertakeaway · 18/04/2022 10:26

@LoudingVoice

It was drinking on an empty stomach that leapt out at me

zingally · 18/04/2022 10:36

I'd have been on the floor after one bottle of wine, but I'm a total lightweight, and I know plenty of people who can put a bottle away and be completely fine.

I'd say for a one-off celebration of a milestone, it's totally okay! If it was multiple times a week, I'd be concerned, but it isn't.

LynetteScavo · 18/04/2022 10:37

One bottle of wine in one go is a lot. I would feel awful the next day. I thought I was a hardened drinker but maybe not, going by other posts here.

I would drink half a bottle four times a week, with a meal, so over a lifetime that's more alcohol, but I think a bottle in one go is a binge.

EvenPhilip · 18/04/2022 11:22

@LoudingVoice I'm not sure that's true?
I thought the body can only process so much alcohol at a time so if you overload it with too much too quickly it will have more of a detrimental effect than pacing yourself.

ImInStealthMode · 18/04/2022 11:36

@LoudingVoice That's definitely not true (in my experience). There's been times when I've had 2 or 3 glasses in quite quick succession in the pub after work and felt awful the next day, and others where I've had 5 or 6 glasses starting at lunchtime and ending in the evening and felt absolutely tip-top the next day.

Tsuni · 18/04/2022 11:39

It's a lot but I guess you can handle it.

Magnoliayellowbird · 18/04/2022 11:45

As this is Mumsnet, you should be very careful with the boozy chocolates at Christmas. Why not think about sharing just one with your partner and then put the box away until Easter.

Well done for finishing your thesis.

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/04/2022 11:55

I don’t think it’s a big deal if it’s occasionally. A whole bottle on your own as a regular thing is heading into problem territory though.

LOL! Grin Mumsnet IS very odd. There are only 2 kinds of women who post on this type of thread about booze.

The ones who can guzzle 2 bottles of wine in one sitting, and could still thread cotton through the eye of a needle, and think you're BORING if you don't knock back at LEAST 12 bottles of wine a week!

And the ones who just drink a thimble full of sherry every third Christmas, and say anyone who drinks any more than that is a raging lush!

gingerhills · 18/04/2022 12:28

Which of those two are you @MurmuratingStarling? Grin

Oneeata · 18/04/2022 12:29

I'm an ex binge drinker. Stopped about 12 years ago. I do worry sometimes what the years of doing so might have done to my body now. I do still enjoy the very "odd" glass of wine or a rum and coke probably 5/6 times a year. Think your mother would have had me dragged to rehab if she heard what I used to drink on a typical Saturday night out.

doggiescats · 18/04/2022 12:47

@NumberTheory

It’s a lot of alcohol for an normal weeknight. It’s restrained for a blow-out-I’ve-just-finished-my-degree-night.
A week night isn’t the same for everyone! I work weekends so a Monday could be a weekend for me !
ChoiceMummy · 18/04/2022 12:51

@MobLife

YABU and I say that without judgement! A bottle of wine in one sitting is officially classed as binge drinking. It's a lot of alcohol-you're not far off the weekly max recommended limit on units (bottle of wine is roughly 10 units) so it is a lot.
This. Absolutely it's a lot.
