Do you think this is a lot of alcohol?

I finally submitted my dissertation today. Daughter is at her dads so went and got a bottle of wine at the shop to celebrate/relax after a stressful few months writing and a stressful year researching.

I finished the bottle of wine then had dinner and now just chilling watching tv.

My mum phoned and asked what I had done this evening so I said and she was utterly appalled at me finishing a bottle of wine. Did I feel tipsy? Yes. Did I feel drunk? No. Did I do anything out of the ordinary? No.

So what's the issue? I drink maybe 3 times a month and I don't think one bottle is a copious amount. AIBU?

A bottle of wine is a nice, relaxing drink without going overboard IMO. The sort of quantity I drink when I’m not worried about regulating my drinking but where I don’t get trollied. Which is rare now I’m old.
I’ll often drink a bottle over the course of 4-5 hours.

MobLife · 17/04/2022 20:49

I'm going to add to my previous comment and say that if this isn't something you regularly do then I'm surprised that you don't feel drunk.

Goldijobsandthe3bears · 17/04/2022 20:49

Well done on the dissertation 🥳

AnnaKorine · 17/04/2022 20:51

I can easily drink a bottle of wine in one evening, if I open it I tend to drink the whole bottle but mainly at weekends. I’m a fully functioning responsible adult, most of my friends do the same.

@Aprilx

I don’t think it is appalling. I am surprised that an infrequent drinker can drink a bottle in one sitting and not feel drunk though.

No. It's not too much at all.

3 bottles a month is totally fine. I could drink 3 in one day. I don't anymore, haven't for a long long time, but I certainly don't see a problem in 1 every now & again.

JaceLancs · 17/04/2022 20:52

I wouldn’t open a bottle of wine if I’m on my own as would feel I have to finish it!
So stick to gin and tonic and save the wine for when a friend or DD come over

PegsandBags · 17/04/2022 20:54

Sounds lovely. Enjoy and don't worry, it's a treat and a celebration. Everyone deserves something like this now and again.

Sunshine847 · 17/04/2022 20:55

Honestly who cares what anyone else thinks. Your clearly not a big drinker and having a well and truly deserved celebration. Nothing wrong with this at all. Enjoy your evening and celebration

PegsandBags · 17/04/2022 20:58

I'll give the the thimble full holier than thou folk a couple more minutes to join in with horror.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 17/04/2022 20:59

Everyone deserves a nice treat now and again, and you've earnt it! As an infrequent indulgence and if you're not driving anywhere it's not hurting anyone.

Vsirbdo · 17/04/2022 21:00

I have a glass or two of wine at least 2-3 times a week but a whole bottle in one night would get me drunk

Vsirbdo · 17/04/2022 21:01

However it’s not every night and you’re not hurting anyone

mumda · 17/04/2022 21:02

How many units is it?
I can manage about a glass and that's enough.i rarely drink though.

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/04/2022 21:03

Yes a whole bottle is a lot.

Mum2jenny · 17/04/2022 21:06

YANBU, congratulations on your dissertation. One bottle of wine occasionally won’t hurt you, but you may have a sore head tomorrow.

Lwg87 · 17/04/2022 21:09

Oh it's fine. I submitted an essay this morning and have had a leisurely bottle this afternoon over a few hours. Congratulations on finishing the dissertation and ignore your mum on this occasion

Cocolatte24 · 17/04/2022 21:11

It’s a lot of wine for 1 person. I’m tipsy after a big glass and I’m an infrequent drinker. I’d be on the floor with 1 bottle. BUT... also depends what wine you’re drinking. I like heavy reds so it may explain it more

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/04/2022 21:11

It’s a lot in one sitting. More than is good for you.

But assuming it’s not a regular thing it’s not that bad either. Just keep an eye it doesn’t creep up to once a week, twice a week..

this. I can't do it anymore but congratulations and enjoy the buzz.
dropthevipers · 17/04/2022 21:12

Christ, it's hardly ten pints of heavy and calling strangers your best mate in the street, is it? I take it you mum gets twatted at christmas on a thimble full of sherry. Forget it.

Forgotthespuds · 17/04/2022 21:14

I've managed a bottle so far whilst preparing dinner. Will probably share another 2 or 3 when we sit down. Well done getting your dissertation finished 🥂

Geezo. A bottle. I would be absolutely mortal on the floor after one glass.
Goldijobsandthe3bears · 17/04/2022 21:17

I’d be vomiting through my eyebrows after a thimble full 😌

I barely drink. Never at home Hadn't had any alcohol for a year, went on the works Christmas do and drank the bar dry Blush Was the last one standing at 6am I've always always had a high alcohol tolerance though!
