Or is this not how anyone does washing?!

Who is BU here, me or DP?

When I put a wash load in the machine, I pick up each item individually and sort of make a mental note of it so I have a rough idea of what is going into the machine (in case anyone asks where an item of their clothing is, or in case I'm wondering "where's that pair of black trousers of mine?", for example).

DP claims to just "pick up a load of stuff and shove it in". He doesn't put them in one by one. So if it's a darks wash that he's put on, and I ask "are my black trousers in that wash?" or "is DD's pink dress in that colours wash by any chance?", he won't know. All he knows is that he shoved a load of dark or coloured stuff in.

He thinks that's a perfectly reasonable way to do the washing. I think surely no one else does this? Surely most people look at what they're putting in so they at least have a rough idea of what's going in?!

Who is BU? Please settle this once and for all! Grin

The most roundabout way of looking for sympathy because your husband is a tool!

Crikey. Harsh. He's a PITA at times but I wouldn't say "tool". 😂

You check pockets for screws? I'm intrigued.... Grin

I don't understand the benefit of your way. Either it's clean in the cupboards or it isn't. Making a mental note of when it goes in the washing machine doesn't add any value to the process.

100problems · 17/04/2022 20:56

I'm very glad that money is wash proof now, I found £30 in the machine last week.

TinaYouFatLard · 17/04/2022 20:58

I’m not sure what’s normal but my life became so much easier when I started sorting the laundry by person than by type.

GracefulDroid · 17/04/2022 21:08

I don't seperate by colours, person, or anything else. Whatever at the top of the pile gets shoved in and washed all together.

Yep, screws! Dh is a service engineer and often has screws, bolts, nuts in his pockets. He's usually very good at taking them out his pockets but you can guarantee if I don't look there will be one in there somewhere.

mathanxiety · 17/04/2022 21:25

How come the basket is not emptied on whatever day you do your wash?

I do two loads (whites/other) when I wash, and a third if there's bedding. When all the DCs were small I would do more.

I suspect this careful taking note is something you only do when you have a small number of DCs.

DizzySquirrel90 · 17/04/2022 22:07

Yabu fuck that, haven't got time to faff about. Get that bloody wash on!

AlwaysLatte · 17/04/2022 22:13

I use a 4-bin laundry sorter in my laundry room so although I just pick up a bundle and put it into the washing machine I'd remember seeing something while sorting, if anyone asks.

FrangipaniBlue · 17/04/2022 23:07

I don't consciously make notes @Sofiegiraffe but on some level I must do it subconsciously because if anyone ever asks "where's my..... X" I could tell them whether it's in the machine, hung out to dry, or folded waiting to be put away!!

Nsky · 17/04/2022 23:10

Only me, pretreat what I need and wash

Tobacco · 17/04/2022 23:13

I don't make a mental note as it'll be visible when it's hanging up to dry. I do check stuff isn't bunched up, eg socks balled up so it washes properly

PlasticineMeg · 17/04/2022 23:13

Fuck me, life is way too short to take a washing inventory! I pull the darks/whites/colours out and shove it all in.
I also make a concerted effort not to behave like some mum/robot hybrid. If they realise you know exactly where all their stuff is they won’t bother looking themselves. And it won’t kill anyone to wait for a load to finish and check themselves.

Should I hand my Woman Badge back? Grin

mathanxiety · 17/04/2022 23:16

Wrt the mess outfits and nicer ones for weekends, etc., you would save yourself a lot of bother if you just stopped worrying about clothes getting messed and let her rip. She's going to grow out of all of it anyway. And you clearly have a washing machine.

EllaB22 · 17/04/2022 23:17

I put it all in . . No sorting!

Blackmagicqueen · 17/04/2022 23:18

Sorry agree with your dp. Shove all washing in as life is too short for faffing about. A colour catching sheet goes in and I wash it all together except whites. No mental notes taken either as if it isn't in the wardrobe it's in the wash! Smile

SleepyRich · 17/04/2022 23:21

Oh my goodness how do you find the mental energy to remember what's in the wash on the offchance someone asks where it is. Clearly if it's not in the drawer then it'll either be in the laundry basket or the wash!

I don't even separate lights from darks, it all gets pressed in together - bed sheets, towels, shirts, underwear, jumpers - set to automatic wash 40C. Never had any problems and everything looks clean and smells great!

Mamamia7962 · 17/04/2022 23:31

I sort my washing when going through the wash basket. So towels have a separate wash, underwear and socks another load, whites, jumpers, duvet covers etc. Why would anyone put stuff all in together. If you put towels in with jumpers for instance the jumpers end up all bobbly.

Lunar27 · 18/04/2022 00:15

Seriously Grin

Washing goes in, 30 minutes later it comes out. It's either dark or light. That it.

However, loading the dishwasher is another matter altogether Wink

bakewellbride · 18/04/2022 03:34

Another vote for shoving it in. Your way is unheard of to me and wouldn't even enter my mind, sorry. If someone doesn't know where something is it's in the wash.

GingerDuo · 18/04/2022 03:43

Shove it in. I know what I've worn and when...if it's not hanging up it's in the laundry...

KeepYaHeadUp · 18/04/2022 03:56

Shover here too. Thought usually I'll know roughly what's in based on having sorted lights/darks into loads and obviously when folding/hanging/drying I'll inadvertently know what's in the wash. I don't consciously make a mental note thought. If it's gone in the wash and not in your drawers it's safe to assume it's still in the wash in some way!

KeepYaHeadUp · 18/04/2022 03:58

@FloraPostePosts

I can’t understand not sorting properly - things need different temperatures (some of my good clothes I wash on completely cold to avoid shrinking) and some fabrics need a gentle programme. My clothes last for years and years because I treat them appropriately. Even though I do this, I still only wash full loads - we have enough to be able to wait until there is a full enough basket to warrant putting a wash on.
I think the assumption when people say they shove stuff into the machine is that these are previously sorted loads. Anything requiring special attention / whites etc have already been dealt with.
Anonymoussssss · 18/04/2022 03:59

I make a mental note. Always have done.
