Or is this not how anyone does washing?!

Who is BU here, me or DP?

When I put a wash load in the machine, I pick up each item individually and sort of make a mental note of it so I have a rough idea of what is going into the machine (in case anyone asks where an item of their clothing is, or in case I'm wondering "where's that pair of black trousers of mine?", for example).

DP claims to just "pick up a load of stuff and shove it in". He doesn't put them in one by one. So if it's a darks wash that he's put on, and I ask "are my black trousers in that wash?" or "is DD's pink dress in that colours wash by any chance?", he won't know. All he knows is that he shoved a load of dark or coloured stuff in.

He thinks that's a perfectly reasonable way to do the washing. I think surely no one else does this? Surely most people look at what they're putting in so they at least have a rough idea of what's going in?!

Who is BU? Please settle this once and for all! Grin

@Sofiegiraffe- no you don’t seem to ‘police’ the washing at all Hmm

Why don’t you change the question to “… if you happen to put a wash on could you make sure my work trousers go in”

Fixed your problem.

Gingercatlover · 17/04/2022 15:02

I just know where mine and the kids stuff is as I wash everyday and have super organised wardrobes so can see empty hangers etc.
For the reason that I don't want to ever be needing something that's been sat waiting to be washed for any length of time.
Couldn't tell you where any of the Husbands stuff ever is though 😆

lljkk · 17/04/2022 15:03

I sometimes notice something like DS work uniform, certain sports or school uniform as it goes in or out. Mostly just heave it in by colour cluster.

racquel86 · 17/04/2022 15:04

I just shove it all in - I don't really separate stuff, although white rarely gets worn as we have a baby and me and DP are both prone to spilling stuff down ourselves - professional couple, mid 30's 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 baby's stuff does go in separate tho and I check where the vanish needs to be sprayed on poo stains 🙌🏻

LadyDanburysCane · 17/04/2022 15:04

Sort it into wash types and then bung it in. If it’s not in the wardrobe/drawers then it is somewhere in the laundry system (basket, machine, line, ironing pile).

Walkaround · 17/04/2022 15:07

I don’t tend to leave things so long that I can’t jam it all into the washing machine in one go (it’s amazing how much can be squeezed in…) and if it’s in the dirty clothes basket, then it’s too dirty to wear again or it wouldn’t be there, so I don’t feel the need to inspect the dirty washing, personally. If there isn’t room, I’ll ensure a little bit of everything goes in, so as to be fair, but it’s annoying if the washing has been left that long, because there’s no way I’m ensuring pairs of socks go in, so some socks then have to wait until the next wash to be paired up again.

Francescaisstressed · 17/04/2022 15:08

I would expect a mate to offer a lift in that scenario and I would have offered a lift

But dependent on the day/her just not thinking I don't think you can be moody about it, it's not like you asked and she said no

bumblingbovine49 · 17/04/2022 15:09

I often don'take.a note of which of my clothes are in the wash, let alone anyone elses so I'm afraid I'm with your DH there . I just shove a pile of darks ot whites in and out the machine on the appropriate temperature. The only time I know what is being washed is it it is towels/ sheets ot clothes as I put sheets/ towels together on a higher temperatures than clothes

WonderingWanda · 17/04/2022 15:12

Nope, I will roughly sort light from dark and see if it feels like a synthetics load or cotton towels etc to determine what sort of wash. I pay slightly mpre attention if ever (rarely these days) loading the tumble in that I will pull out sports wear, bras and woolly jumpers thst can't be tumbled but I still couldn't tell you what else is in there.

That said, each dc has their own laundry basket so theirs go in one at a time and I can be fairly confident in saying it'll be in the washing it I've taken their basket down.

BertieBotts · 17/04/2022 15:17

Oh my god, who has the mental brain space to make a note of every item in the wash :o

I might remember a couple of specific items and I do tend to put stuff in one by one in case it needs stain removal or pocket checking etc, but if DH wanted to know about a specific pair of jeans I would not know which ones I'd put in and DS1 has so many identical(ish) t-shirts that I probably wouldn't know specifically either.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 17/04/2022 15:18

Shove it all in. Rarely separate colours let alone make a mental note of what is in each load. If I need something washed specifically for any of us, I will make sure that item is in, but that's as far as my attention to detail goes with washing.b

Shinyandnew1 · 17/04/2022 15:18

I don’t put each item individually into the washing machine, no. I honestly couldn’t care less where things were!

He wouldn't. He'd have forgotten by the time he did it.

“It’s definitely you.
Even if I had noticed, I would as a matter of principle claim not to know.”

How odd.

It’s just a question of managing expectations.

Sofiegiraffe · 17/04/2022 15:20

@KatieC0811

I'm with you OP!! Although I am very anal about the laundry, DH isn't allowed to help 🤣 i definitely make subconscious notes on whats in there whilst I'm sorting the washing, putting things the right way round and doing up buttons ect 🙂 I can't deal with peoples lacklustre approach to laundry 😩 i also fold everything before I take it outside to hang on the line 😉😅 my family hate me 🤭

😂 welcome to our little minority club!

No and quite honestly would be really happy if other members of my household put a wash on to be honest, but usually falls to me . If they can’t find it and they put it in basket It’s probably in wash or drying . Obvs make sure uniform ready for Monday that’s my only mental note .

@Cocomarine “most likely on floordrome” 100% my daughter.

melj1213 · 17/04/2022 15:21

Nope, there's only DD and I (and just me when DD is at her dad's) so it's easy to keep track of clothes as they are in one of 4 places: hung up in the wardrobe, in the dirty laundry basket, in the washer or drying on the airer.

I only do a maximum of a couple of loads of clothes a week especially on weeks it is just me at home so I just dump out the laundry basket, sort into two piles (lights/darks) and then bung one in the washer. If I need specific items then I just prioritise that load of lights or darks over the other and that one goes in the washer first.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/04/2022 15:24

@Ohilovetorave

Of course I don't make notes, just shove it in and take it out again when it's done, that's just bonkers quite honestly Hmm
Me too, mental notes?!Confused
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/04/2022 15:24

If it's not in your wardrobe it's in the wash, where else would it be?

rwalker · 17/04/2022 15:25

There's nothing wrong with doing it your way but for me way OTT surely when you empty the washer you will find out what went in .

But you can't seriously expect your DH to do the same as you. If you want to know for what ever reason do it yourself .

Ladylalaboo1 · 17/04/2022 15:29

I understand what you mean,it's not like you go out of your way to physically check each item it's just a conscious thing where you collect the items you know need washing and just mentally make a note of them and remember, I have 3 young kids so often there is a lot of washing, more than just one load so I tend to wash things that I might need first, especially if it is uniform so I always know what's being washed and what isn't. Just a habit I've got into and isn't an effort or anything!

Tanfastic · 17/04/2022 15:31

I have a whites and darks pile bit then just shove it in. No mental notes taken. I've never heard of anyone doing this 😂

latetothefisting · 17/04/2022 15:33

Wtf?
Your dh is right, you are wrong. Stuff is in the washing machine for what an hour or two surely everyone can do without "knowing" where an item of clothes is for that long?

IsSpringSprangedYet · 17/04/2022 15:34

I might note that DS4's school trousers aren't in the wash so I must make sure they go before Monday, or if I want a particular dress of DD's to be clean, then I'll make a mental note of those... but apart from that, all washing just goes in.

JinglingHellsBells · 17/04/2022 15:34

This is so weird.

Surely the onus is on the owner of the clothes to know where they are?

Not the person loading the machine.

If you have worn your black trousers @Sofiegiraffe and put them in the laundry basket, then you know they are there.

And they will stay there until washed.

Same for your kids. If they or you put dirty clothes out to be washed, they are going to be washed.
