Or is this not how anyone does washing?!

Who is BU here, me or DP?

When I put a wash load in the machine, I pick up each item individually and sort of make a mental note of it so I have a rough idea of what is going into the machine (in case anyone asks where an item of their clothing is, or in case I'm wondering "where's that pair of black trousers of mine?", for example).

DP claims to just "pick up a load of stuff and shove it in". He doesn't put them in one by one. So if it's a darks wash that he's put on, and I ask "are my black trousers in that wash?" or "is DD's pink dress in that colours wash by any chance?", he won't know. All he knows is that he shoved a load of dark or coloured stuff in.

He thinks that's a perfectly reasonable way to do the washing. I think surely no one else does this? Surely most people look at what they're putting in so they at least have a rough idea of what's going in?!

Who is BU? Please settle this once and for all! Grin

Shove it in!

Why do you need to be able to account for everybody's bloody washing anyway? If they've recently put it in the washing basket and it's yet to reappear then it's dirty or being washed. It's not available to wear either way so no point wasting time mentally listing where specifically in the laundry cycle every item is.

dottydodah · 17/04/2022 13:39

All in together here! If not in cupboard /drawer in wash. No time /inclination for mental notes for Laundry Im afraid

WildFlowerBees · 17/04/2022 13:42

I sort mine into piles, darks, colours, whites, towels etc then pick up a pile and put it in the washer. I don't ever just pick up a load and chuck it in did that once and there was a massive spider in the washing making it's getaway.

Hugasauras · 17/04/2022 13:43

I shove. There's not really many places stuff can be. If the item I want isn't hanging up/put away then I know it's in the wash.

EasterDecorations · 17/04/2022 13:45

I pick out everything in one category eg whites or darks and take it to the machine, at that point it is all just shoved in. I might notice some of what’s going in but don’t make a point of it. It’ll be out again in an hour.

20viona · 17/04/2022 13:54

Pile them
In.

FelicityFidget · 17/04/2022 13:54

@IDidntWearASmileToday

I don't even separate Blush
Nor do I. It's bloody liberating isn't it! When the basket is full shove it all in!
ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 17/04/2022 13:55

Everything that's not a full-on white item gets chucked into one massive, tangled up load in this house!

HoppingPavlova · 17/04/2022 14:00

“No. They’re either in your wardrobe, more likely on your floordrobe, or if they were in the washing basket then they’re either still in there - or as a load went on half an hour ago, in the machine.”

Exactly this! Unless your washing machine has a load that goes for over a day I just don’t see what mental notes would achieve. Lots of spare time and mental space the average person just doesn’t have.

actiongirl1978 · 17/04/2022 14:02

Shove them all in and only separate DH's white work shirts.

mouse70 · 17/04/2022 14:12

Sort light from dark. Check all pockets as no one else does.

Sofiegiraffe · 17/04/2022 14:12

@Theoldwoman

Team OP here!

Sort everything, and make a mental note of what's in each load.

We don't even separate the colours. They just get shoved in and then washed.

Sofiegiraffe · 17/04/2022 14:14

@sauvignonblancplz

Would it be a better idea for you to say… “my work trousers are needed for tomorrow or the girls need their dotty jumper for nursery. When you put the wash on can you put them in there?”

Rather than after the event?
You sound hard work though.

I sound hard work 😂 amazing, not had that one on here for a while.

I don't police when DP is going to put a wash on. Sometimes, shock horror, he takes the initiative and puts a wash in without me knowing. Hence I don't always know what's been prioritised until after it's washed.

Do people really not check pockets for tissues and stuff? Tissues left in a pocket are the devil.

Sofiegiraffe · 17/04/2022 14:15

@MaidEdithofAragon

Well I'm as bonkers as you OP! 😁 I check each item, unball the screwed up socks, shake everything out, check pockets for tissues and make sure both socks of a pair have gone in together. So yes, I know what's in each stage of the wash. Family of five and I do all the laundry. So yes, I do know at any one time where any garment might be. I've always been like this. Maybe there's no help for me now...mid fifties do probably too late to change!
Woohoo!👏🏻

@Alondra

Everyone except the 4-5 or so on this thread who do it my way. So not everyone, then

Which should tell you that in a Mumsnet thread mostly answered by women, only 4-5 are agreeing with you how you do your wash should tell you DH is not unreasonable?

Obvious by now?

My comment was in reference to "everyone". It's not everyone, is it. It's the majority. But not everyone.

Shove it in.
Pretty near no colour sorting etc either except if eg something not washed before and very dark or brightly coloured.

SirChenjins · 17/04/2022 14:17

Shove it in. My rule is that it only gets washed if it’s in your laundry basket, so if it’s not there then you can assume it’s in the washing machine, and thereafter in the tumble dryer, on the clothes horse or washing line and you’re welcome to search for it.

Gizacluethen · 17/04/2022 14:21

If its in the washing basket it gets bunged in. I tend to know if somethings there though, I have quite a good visual memory.

DH I'd current struggling with the concept of the washing basket atm do we're having a fun game of "I dont have any clean pants." "That's weird, the washing basket is empty but there's none in the wash." While we both stare at his dirty clothes on the floor.

I sort things individually, but only because I like to make sure that there aren't any colours in there that shouldn't be in there 😂. I also like to make sure stuff is turned the right way out so stains get washed out.
returntoUK · 17/04/2022 14:23

I’m very careful with clothes and sort them in terms of colour and materials. This means my clothes last longer,

People here saying they shove the clothes in is making me shudder.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 17/04/2022 14:24

Big arm full shove and it all in. I've much better things to do, then load the washing machine up one item at a time!

caoraich · 17/04/2022 14:25

I don't even separate the colours. Once basket is full enough for a wash, in it all gets chucked. I have a vague idea of if the toddler's favourite PJs are in there as she would wear them 24/7 if she could. Otherwise if something can't be found I presume it is somewhere in the washing/drying cycle.
