To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

The problems are not dogs it's irresponsible dog owners. Dogs bring so much joy, and can literally be life saving to people, I honestly think there is something wrong with people who actively dislike dogs, I wouldn't trust them and would not think they were a nice person (disliking certain dog owners is different).

Also, if a pub or restaurant allows dogs, and I'm on a trip away with my dog, it's coming in with me. I was at the lakes a few weeks ago and everyone seemed perfectly happy with dogs being in the pubs. I have never experienced any of this anti dog thing outside of mumsnet. People are just miserable

It's not the catchiest title, I know....[/quote]
No, not very catchy at all lol.

But at least we all know now who throws their dog shit up into trees... @CorsicaDreaming

Penguinevere · 14/04/2022 15:44

YANBU but it’s the owners that are the problem not the actual dogs.

People talking about dogs like they’re people or directly comparing them to children sound foolish.

Plenty of dog owners don’t train them beyond house training (and sometimes not even that), they don’t pick up after them or they get a dog which is unsuitable for their lifestyle.

if you wouldn’t be seen dead dropping a crisp packet in the park why do you think it’s ok to leave literal faeces?

CallMeRachel · 14/04/2022 15:45

It’s ok to be fed up with people getting dogs who repeatedly let them down. Dogs can live perfectly happily and cleanly in neighbourhoods with the right ownership. People are dicks, not dogs.

pictish · 14/04/2022 15:46

I was hotly pursued on a run a while ago by a rather sizeable golden retriever. It caught up, then repeatedly leapt at me barking while I cringed away from it. It was head level with me. I could see it was a young retriever and sensed only play in its approach but nevertheless the bloody thing raked my legs and arms with its claws and almost knocked me to the ground. When the owner showed up I was visibly shaken and scratched and still fending off her boisterous dog. She clipped the lead on and tugged him away without a word. I called after her “if he’s going to carry on like that, you need to keep him on the lead”. She snapped back…”HE RAN AWAY FROM ME?!” as if that explained all.
So there we have it. Not very bright.

Greyrootszerohoots · 14/04/2022 15:47

YNBU, my experience has been same. Know of several bites (husband 3 times over last 10 or so years) and the dog shit situation with a toddler drives me nuts - forever dousing the stuff off shoes and clothes.

Only yesterday I had to quickly scoop her up as a terrier that he slipped the lead came running over in the doctors surgery carpark. Then ran off towards a busy main with a flapping owner behind it.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 14/04/2022 15:49

Congrats, your patent dislike of dogs has manifested itself as a phobia in your daughter

FrustratedC0ffeeDrinker · 14/04/2022 15:49

I grew-up with dogs and I like them. However I work full-time and do not want to take on the responsibility for looking after a dog. I went to a well known cafe chain the other day, which unbeknown to me allows dogs inside. Sat down and it dawned on me that there were dogs everywhere. Felt like I was sitting in a dog kennels as opposed to a cafe. Tainted what should have been a relaxing coffee.

Pumperthepumper · 14/04/2022 15:50

I agree, I’ve got two dogs next to me that bark all the fucking time and it does my head in. Also agree with the bags of shit everywhere, why bother bagging it if you’re not going to bin in?

I also hate dogs in cafes or restaurants, and that’s becoming more and more popular around here. Rank.

Misspacorabanne · 14/04/2022 15:51

Yanbu op! Dogs off leads in parks are a nuisance, I've been to the park today with my toddler, owners throwing balls and dogs running everywhere! They shouldn't be off leads in parks in my opinion. I've never been worried about dogs but since having DC Ive had afew near misses where dogs have come close to knocking him flying, one dog went after his football once as he was toddling along and kicking it, he panicked as it was huge and nearly knocked him over! Its ok if owners think their dog will be ok/is ok with children/strangers but how do the other people know the dogs ok when it's hurting towards them! Yanbu!

Spannwr1971 · 14/04/2022 15:52

I live in Puglia where dogs lie asleep in the middle of the road, wander into your kitchen to see what they can skank, and never have so much as a collar on them. I've never seen a dog fight here, not ever a skirmish. They all mull about in packs and find their place. We've got a Doberman who was nine when we got here. It's taken a shift in head state to adapt from the UK mentality. I dunno if Britain is overcrowded or just control crazy. I know that if you suggested some of the stuff in this thread to the locals here, they'd think you'd lost your marbles.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 14/04/2022 15:54

love the way Puglia has "pug" in it. Sounds idyllic.

greyyellowblue · 14/04/2022 15:54

We live near a nature reserve and walk there a lot. There's a section where dogs must be on leads and a section where no dogs are allowed due to the animals that reside there and protection orders.

Every. Single. Time. there are multiple dog owners who ignore this. When we call them out on it (in a friendly, you must have missed the 10 signs way) you get tutting, eye rolling and 'oh but my dog is friendly'. I'm so sick of their entitlement.

I'm also sick of being told I shouldn't take my autistic child to a Forrest / wood / hill / beach (which he needs for sensory support) when he dislikes dogs jumping at him because 'obviously there will be dogs there' - I'm sorry, I didn't realise everything that is green outside, dogs and their owners are the only ones allowed to enjoy 🙄

And the dog shit is EVERYWHERE. Reminds me of growing up before laws came in. What is going on?

Tilltheend99 · 14/04/2022 15:55

@saveforthat

Yes YABU because (as you said) it's the owners fault. Some children are badly behaved all the time with no consequences but I am not totally fed up with children, just some parents.
Children don’t maul dogs to death whereas dogs kill babies and toddlers on a near weekly basis in the U.K. these days

Sod that. Dogs need exercise and should not be confined to on-lead walking. There are plenty of places, including playgrounds, where dogs are not allowed, and I've no problem with sections of parks that are restricted to on lead only.

But the welfare of most dogs depends on being able to expend energy and play energetic games. They, and their owners, have as much right to enjoy that as you and your DC have to enjoy the park. There are vastly more areas in your world where dogs are not allowed, or not allowed off lead, so you're entirely free to stick to those areas if you don't want to be around dogs off lead.

FourChimneys · 14/04/2022 15:57

pumperthepumper I agree about cafes. I used to go to a lovely independent one but last time I went in they had a new dogs welcome sign. There were dogs sniffing round the tables and two on the sofas. Revolting, and they have lost my custom and that of the friend I used to meet there.

As for poo, all dogs should have their dna registered so all poo could be traced to the owner. With a £500 or £1k fine the scheme would soon pay for itself.

SirChenjins · 14/04/2022 15:58

YANBU - and I have a (shock, horror - lockdown) dog. He’s kept under tight control at all times we’re on a walk, is brought inside when he barks, and I pick up his poos every time - and carry the bag until I reach a bin, regardless of how far it is. I’m fed up of dog owners who do none of the above as it gives the rest of us a bad name, and who let their off lead dogs barrel up to mine and then can’t recall them because they cba to train their animal. Unfortunately, just as there are some parents who drag their kids up there are some dog owners who do the same.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 14/04/2022 15:58

I look after dogs for a living (in my home). Today, I have 7. Each and every one has been walked ON the lead only, and every crap has been picked up and brought home, or placed in a poo bin en route. I also picked up some cold ones that other people had not bothered to pick up (saves me encountering it another time). It's not hard!

I was disgusted recently at the amount of crap left on the coastal path. Later that day, I went back there and picked it all up - 23 shits I picked up!

Some dog owners annoy me as well. They let their dogs off the lead who run up to me and scare the dogs that I have ON the lead, so they all start jumping around, meanwhile my leads are getting tangled and my arms feel like they might come out of the sockets. I mean, can't they see the chaos they have placed me in?

The latest annoyance is a man who takes his 2 tiny dogs out at about 730am, and I keep seeing him, when I take my boarding dogs out. A few days ago, instead of just walking on, he stops and stands still as I approach, just staring at me. As I don't want our dogs to get entangled, I held back and said "I'll let you go first", so he proceeds along the path, I wait until he's far away, and then I start on the path, then suddenly his 2 dogs are circling mine, because for some inane reason, he has let them off and let them run all the way back to where I am. So, then he has to come after them and say to me "Oh, there they are". WTF? The same thing happened a few days on the trot with this guy. I wanted to shout for him to Fuck Off, but that wouldn't be good for my business really.

Babdoc · 14/04/2022 15:59

I can’t stand the bloody things.
A quarter of a million people attend A and E with dog bites every year in the UK, at great cost to the NHS. They are a hazard to postmen, walkers, and children out playing, many of their owners do not clean up their damn shit, they stink and slobber, and jump up on one’s clean coat with their filthy muddy paws while “just being friendly” according to their useless owners.
I’d like to see punitive fines for dog fouling, the return of licensing, and a lifetime ban on dog ownership for anyone whose dog bites someone. That should reduce the excess dog population, which has been swelled greatly by idiots buying them during lockdown and failing to train or control them at all.

SirChenjins · 14/04/2022 15:59

Yeah - because dog owners obey those dogs every time 🙄

howardmoonseyebrow · 14/04/2022 16:00

I’ve voted yabu but only because it’s the owners at fault not the dogs

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 14/04/2022 16:02

Oh, and another thing....when I walk mine at 730am, I am as quiet as a mouse. I presume some people could still be in bed - lots of retired people here. Oh wow, the volume that other people talk at whilst going past people's homes, makes me wince. Full on, talking and laughing at the top of their lungs. Not just dog walkers, it could be people on bikes, or jogging. At 730am!

Misspacorabanne · 14/04/2022 16:02

@TeaKlaxon I never said they should be confined to onlead walking, I agree they need exercise, I just don't think parks are the right place! Just my opinion. But yes I agree designated areas of parks for off lead runs perhaps a good compromise.

Puglia has a huge problem{As do other regions} with abandoned and stray dogs who are breeding indiscriminately , who get hit by vehicles &c, and they do fight, over ovulating females. Benign neglect , rather than responsible ownership.
TeaKlaxon · 14/04/2022 16:04

No, they don't.

There are about 13 million dogs in the UK, and in the most recent year for which we have a full year's worth of stats (2021), one child was killed by a dog . It was the same in 2020. The same in 2019.

That is not a 'near weekly basis'.
