To be totally fed up with dogs?

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

@hepaticanobilis

YANBU because I think something about the dog owning culture has really changed in the past 10 years or so. We always had a dog when I was growing up but owners seemed to be much more responsible in general. I think these days a lot of people who shouldn't have dogs, do, and that causes all sorts of problems from lack of training to lack of time to actually walk them and keep them active so the end result is lots of badly trained dogs living with clueless owners.
This definitely. With all the lockdown puppies they seem more of a fashion accessory, or life milestone than a dangerous animal that the owners are responsible for. If I have to listen to one more ineffectual owner "reassure" my terrified kids that the barking dog jumping in their faces is "friendly" I may lose it entirely.
CharityShopChic · 14/04/2022 15:10

I don't like dogs either.

The main problem is that some owners think everyone must love their animal as much as they do, let it run free, do as it pleases, take it to cafes and restaurants and expect everyone else to just put up with their animal.

Your pet. Keep it to yourself. The rest of us have ZERO interest in it.

LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 14/04/2022 15:11

It’s got so much worse since lockdown. So many dogs that weren’t properly socialised, that people can’t take care of properly now they’re working again.

It should be illegal to let a dog off lead if you don’t have recall. It’s always the “oh yes just so friendly” owners that don’t actually have any control of their dogs.

I don’t walk anywhere now without a stick of some kind.

FedUpthenaBitmore · 14/04/2022 15:11

And as for dog poo …..

It’s everywhere round here 🤢 either grey lumps of ginger turd across the pavement or bags of dog poo scattered about or hanging off bushes and trees ??!!!

GatoradeMeBitch · 14/04/2022 15:12

There's a theory that you get more of whatever you focus on (whether because of the way our brains function, or even as a law of the universe). Reading your post is reminding me of that theory.

RobynNora · 14/04/2022 15:12

Also hate dogs in cafes and pubs. Dog friendly cafes always smell!

CharityShopChic · 14/04/2022 15:13

Case in point this morning. Was volunteering in a charity shop, woman comes in carrying a dog. Told her sorry, we have a no dogs policy and she'd have to leave it outside. She says, "But it's a chihuahua! And she doesn't like being apart from me!"

Tough titty. Out you pop with your animal, irrespective of size or feelings on the matter.

FedUpthenaBitmore · 14/04/2022 15:13

And the warm days we had recently…… local park warmed up a bit and the stench of warm dog shit was overwhelming 🤢🤢

I think every borough should have one designated dog free park so that children can run and play and not get covered in crap or knocked over by badly trained dogs

Alexandra2001 · 14/04/2022 15:14

@saveforthat

Yes YABU because (as you said) it's the owners fault. Some children are badly behaved all the time with no consequences but I am not totally fed up with children, just some parents.
Do random kids jump up at you? bite you? and do you step in their shit?

No you don't, so there is zero comparison.

Too many dog owners thing that just because they tolerate all of the above, everyone else too as well.

Have dog, clean up after it, get trained and stop be anti social.

I don't have all these issues with my mutt because is very well trained and not a surrogate child.

CorsicaDreaming · 14/04/2022 15:15

@NameChChChChanges1

Yanbu at all. I think they should do DNA testing on dog shit and prosecute dog owners who leave it. Between that, dogs ripping children to pieces, owners who don't know how to look after them etc I am also incredibly fed up.

That really is a brilliant idea re the dog shit DNA and would be do-able. I loathe dog shit more than any other substance. A dog owner once nearly punched my DH when he pointed out their dog had pooed in the park and asked him to clear it up. Just unbelievable entitlement- and total unawareness about the serious health issues around dog shit especially.

And people who put it in a bag and then leave it hanging up on a fence or at eye level on a hedge. What on Earth is that all about?? Hmm

EyePeeEh · 14/04/2022 15:15

Went to a nature reserve last week.

Would have been pristine were it not for various trees adorned with bags of dog crap.

Frenziedandfurious · 14/04/2022 15:17

The smell in cars as well! Used to have to politely turn down offers of lifts from an ex work colleague as her car minged. I'd be ready for an important meeting showered, fresh clothes, make up, clean hair, perfume and would arrive stinking of dog. No thank you

CorsicaDreaming · 14/04/2022 15:17

@1forAll74

I live in a village, and lots of folks have dogs,, but never come across any that are barking snarly badly behaved types, there are little fancy dogs, and some big breeds of dogs, that all seem to be well trained, so guess this must be unusual.. although some of the owners do not always pick up dog poo on the village green or pavements,

I don't have any issues with cats or dogs, although i have three cats,, My issue is with slugs,, I have a very old terraced cottage, and its got a big damp problem, and needs some big attention, so have slugs in the kitchen all the time, and the other day, i went to my shed, came back in the back door, and there were two huge frogs, on top of each other, merrrily mating on my back door mat.,

Brilliantly oblique!

I've now got an image of mating frogs in my head!! 🐸 🐸

EggBurger · 14/04/2022 15:18

Bingo! That was quick

Fastest I've ever seen.

Tigertigertigertiger · 14/04/2022 15:18

Couldn’t agree more. Most dog owners can’t control their dogs.
Those who can - the dogs are an absolute delight

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/04/2022 15:19

I would rather take my 2 dogs to an enclosed field, away from people and other dogs.

Stickytreacle · 14/04/2022 15:19

YANBU, I've owned multiple dogs and family has working dogs my whole life. When the current two go then I won't be getting another. I'm sick to death of untrained, boisterous, neurotic dogs with gormless owners who couldn't care less that their cute dog is causing havoc and leaving shit everywhere. I'm unfortunate enough to live where people drive to to walk their dogs, meaning we are overrun with cars that the village can't cope with and owners dawdling along with cups of coffee while their dogs are all over the place.
We rarely had sheep lost to dogs, but it's been a yearly occurrence for about the past five or six years. Fed up of useless owners.

Some City parks have a ''Child only'' section, but what astounds me is that people STILL walk with dogs through the ''Child only'' section to get to the rest of the park. Mind boggling.

No one to enforce these rules, it seems.

Lady089 · 14/04/2022 15:21

I absolutely love dogs but there are too many irresponsible owners.

FedUpthenaBitmore · 14/04/2022 15:21

@oakleaffy years ago we used to go to a park in London called coram fields that was strictly no dogs and it was amazing

Alexandra2001 · 14/04/2022 15:22

Exactly! what kind of wanker stops and cleans up after their dog, bags it and then thinks "i know, i'll chuck it high up into a tree"

Will going down their later on with Pole Saw to retrieve it... and this is the Tamar Discovery Trial, little known, very beautiful.

Is doing this some sort of badge of honour?

To be totally fed up with dogs?

I do agree with this. The best behaved dog I know is a cocker spaniel who is deaf as a post.

The owner has spent years training her to respond to hand signals and honestly she is just very well behaved, doesn't jump, doesn't run off, just trots along beside her owner. Having said that the owner is s sensible person who wouldn't dream of taking their dog to a restaurant or into a shop.

SushiShopSearch · 14/04/2022 15:23

YANBU, there are far too many dogs in towns. There are far too many dog walkers too, walking packs of dogs.

luckylavender · 14/04/2022 15:24

@saveforthat

The children are unlikely to bite you badly or shit on your lawn.
Frenziedandfurious · 14/04/2022 15:24

The extendable leads! Dogs careering about wildly getting under my bike wheels...in the cycle lane! They're a complete liability. And yes dog owners who take their mutts in the car for a walk rather than walking them from home, therefore contributing to congestion and pollution.
A lot of dog owners are gormless and more than a little entitled.
