To be totally fed up with dogs?

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

@Stickytreacle

YANBU, I've owned multiple dogs and family has working dogs my whole life. When the current two go then I won't be getting another. I'm sick to death of untrained, boisterous, neurotic dogs with gormless owners who couldn't care less that their cute dog is causing havoc and leaving shit everywhere. I'm unfortunate enough to live where people drive to to walk their dogs, meaning we are overrun with cars that the village can't cope with and owners dawdling along with cups of coffee while their dogs are all over the place. We rarely had sheep lost to dogs, but it's been a yearly occurrence for about the past five or six years. Fed up of useless owners.
Farmer I know of regularly gets entitled people walking off lead dogs through his fields. One dog was chasing his cattle and he was able to give it a swift, hard kick so it released, but it was injured by his kick. Owners tried to claim, but got nowhere.

What about the farmer's injured, stressed cattle?
He ought to put the Bull in the field , that might put off the random walkers.
Cattle can get very edgy with dogs, just best to never walk through fields where there is stock, unless dog is on a lead {and stick to footpaths}

Frenziedandfurious · 14/04/2022 15:25

I try to find dog free beaches when I'm at the coast. Far more relaxing.

crazyhouse12345 · 14/04/2022 15:26

Can't stand dogs either. And sorry, no matter how clean your house is, it still smells like boarding kennels...

ForeverTeach · 14/04/2022 15:26

I adore dogs and have one myself, who is of course beautiful and lovely. I absolutely hate dog poo, slobbery and jumpy dogs. The they are just pleased to see you / want kisses can fuck right off.

Not to add the problem of people letting their dogs run up to mine ‘to be friends’ 🙄 or when I am riding the he’s curious, yup my massive horse has curious hooves with metal shoes…

I would pay for a licence and even contribute to an enclosed field to help this problem. Unfortunately as with all issues there will always be those that don’t follow the rules.

Tlollj · 14/04/2022 15:27

I like well behaved dogs. Just not jumpy, licky, barking shitting ones. Two little delights over the back from me. Lovely little bundles of fur. Never seen them out on a walk, just hear them barking. So that’s totally down to the owners.

Here you go

It's not the catchiest title, I know....

AryaStarkWolf · 14/04/2022 15:29

ffs all the animal haters are out today

grapewines · 14/04/2022 15:29

@CharityShopChic

I don't like dogs either.

The main problem is that some owners think everyone must love their animal as much as they do, let it run free, do as it pleases, take it to cafes and restaurants and expect everyone else to just put up with their animal.

Your pet. Keep it to yourself. The rest of us have ZERO interest in it.

All of this.

They're everywhere. Apart for service dogs I don't see why you need to take your dog to a cafe or a pub. There is just no need.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/04/2022 15:29

@AryaStarkWolf there certain is a few.

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 15:30

Daughter’s fear stems from an incident as a toddler when a dog got on a trampoline with her and they ended up in a tangled scrabbling heap together. The dog was freaked out rather than aggressive but was also much bigger than her and scratched her quite badly in the panic and it terrified her.

I don’t want her to be afraid of dogs, I’m not pushing anxiety but have been trying to encourage her to get past it, for example being positive with the relative’s dog saying “ahh look he’s excited to see you, he’s saying hello”, as I have to literally hold him back from jumping up at her.

But honestly it feels dishonest and dismissive to say stuff like that when the dog clearly would be jumping up and knocking her over if I let him. Same with many dogs we come across while out, off lead with owners miles away shouting “he’s friendly”. I respond calmly but it infuriates me and is dangerous.

She doesn’t scream by the way, but she does instinctively try to run away and so often the dog then gives chase which only reinforces her fear.

pictish · 14/04/2022 15:31

I’m ‘doggy’ although don’t currently own one as we are not in a position to keep adog company during the day when we are all out at work and school.
I have noticed an increase in out of control poorly trained dogs since lockdown. Owners who quite clearly haven’t a clue what a well trained dog actually is, before they let their dog off the lead. I meet plenty that chase and jump up at me barking when I’m out on a run, while they call uselessly from wherever it is they are. Annoying band-wagon jumping dickheads with stupid dogs.

crazyhouse12345 · 14/04/2022 15:31

Oh yes definitely DNA testing. All dogs should have a sample taken when registered at a vet. The cost of the DNA testing can be added to the owners fine.

Well, goldfish are utter twats IMO.
BlueOverYellow · 14/04/2022 15:32

YANBU

Not helped by the fact that many people went out and got 'lockdown puppies' and never bothered to socialise or train them properly. Badly behaved dogs with no recall who jump on people and don't stop. They also take them into children's playparks, which generally isn't allowed, onto school grounds at pick up times, also not allowed. When told it's not allowed, you get verbally abused. Madness.

RobertsRadio · 14/04/2022 15:35

I'm a dog lover Op, but I agree with you. The numbers of dogs and the clueless, fuckwit owners who take no responsibility for their dog's behaviour or their shit is out of control.

DickVanDyke26 · 14/04/2022 15:35

YANBU. Sounds like a nightmare to me. It seems like every man and his dog has a dog these days Grin

Spidey66 · 14/04/2022 15:35

God MN is always full of dog haters. Dogs are great and far better than humans. Especially my dog Maggie who is the best dog in the world.

To be totally fed up with dogs?
yellowsuninthesky · 14/04/2022 15:38

With all the lockdown puppies they seem more of a fashion accessory, or life milestone than a dangerous animal that the owners are responsible for

Yes, even before covid they were a bit of a status symbol because it's expensive to keep one even if it's a mongrel and you didn't have to buy it. But it's got worse since lockdown.

And the idea of taking them to the office....(unless you work at the Battersea Dogs Home or similar, obviously).

And I do get fed up with the false comparisons with children. Yes they can be a (loud) nuisance but I can go for a run without being hassled by kids. They don't poo on trains. And they don't bite people or make them fall off their bikes.

Pyri · 14/04/2022 15:38

@CharityShopChic

Case in point this morning. Was volunteering in a charity shop, woman comes in carrying a dog. Told her sorry, we have a no dogs policy and she'd have to leave it outside. She says, "But it's a chihuahua! And she doesn't like being apart from me!"

Tough titty. Out you pop with your animal, irrespective of size or feelings on the matter.

Shouldn’t you just have been grateful that she was there at all, after she’s supporting the charity shop after all? Wink
Snowflakes1122 · 14/04/2022 15:39

People who let their dogs coming blinding towards you at full speed and just say “it’s ok, he’s friendly” piss me off immensely. So presumptuous to think everyone loves your dog so they think this is acceptable behaviour.

Yanbu

Snowflakes1122 · 14/04/2022 15:39

Bounding not blinding

CharityShopChic · 14/04/2022 15:39

@Spidey66

Yes but what everyone is saying @Spidey66 is that you are free to love your dog and get as much joy from her as you like. Crack on.

Just do not expect anyone else to love your dog too. Don't expect people to be overjoyed to see your dog in the pub/cafe/restaurant, or when it approaches them in the park.

Keep your dog to yourself.

ForeverTeach · 14/04/2022 15:41
