To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

Says who? I prefer dogs to other people’s children.
Society as a whole says it; the law says it. Your individual preference has no bearing on the social hierarchy.

XelaM · 18/04/2022 16:22

I definitely prefer my dog to other people's kids. I think all dog owners would. I sometimes prefer him yo my own 😂

@Beecham

YANBU

Dogs are a major nuisance these days. Not to mention those that are let off leads in the open countryside and kill livestock, and disturb and kill wildlife.

Dog owners should need a license and a mandatory training course imo.

@Beecham

I agree.

Training should be mandatory and a requirement of a licence.

Dog owners are the most entitled people I ever come across.

I agree.

“Dog owners are the most entitled people I ever come across.”

Bloody hell make a sweeping generalisation why don’t you?

@Whiskeypowers

All you have to do is look at a few pages of this thread to see it’s not so sweeping … or go to a local park on a sunny day where people are having picnics and dog owners are letting their dogs ruin everyone else’s day.

Whiskeypowers · 18/04/2022 20:42

@Hertsgirl10

Sorry but where I live you don’t see that every day and there are a lot of dogs and dog owners

It is a sweeping generalisation
Most dog owners I know are responsible and their dogs are well behaved.

You have taken a thread where some folks have an axe to grind and tarred all dog owners with the same brush which is ridiculous

Feelingpoorly123 · 18/04/2022 21:24

@Hertsgirl10
Dogs aren’t ruining the day... so dramatic 🙄 I love saying hi to dogs when they come up to me. If you don’t like animals you are basically dead inside.

LizzieW1969 · 18/04/2022 23:08

I’ve been to plenty of parks for picnics, especially since being a mum, and we’ve never had dogs ruining our day, despite there being plenty of dogs there, especially in good weather. The only thing that ruins picnics for me is wasps in late summer. Grin

It feels like a parallel universe on here sometimes.

@FrustratedC0ffeeDrinker

That’s your opinion.
Maybe you like muddy slobbery dogs ruining your outfits on the way to work and the ow er saying … it’s ok he’s friendly, while their mute jumping all over you, maybe friendly but now I either have to go home and change or walk round with shit on me all day…

And maybe they don’t ruin your lunch while jumping all over your picnic, maybe it wouldn’t if it was just one dogs, but it happens and you people are in denial 😂

Also who said people that don’t like other people’s untrained dogs jumping all over them and their stuff, don’t like animals?
Strange statement to make?
I have pets myself, always have had but I understand that they need training (apart from the fish)
For their own benefit and people around them, people think that dogs are human, they’re not and they don’t want to be, people want them to be, acting like they are humans ruin them, make them anxious and nervous.
And I understand that people next door and 5 doors up don’t want to hear a dog howling and barking 24/7 so train them as puppies.
But people that just want a cutie little puppy dog seem to think everyone else had to love it and put up with what ever it does or ‘they are dead inside’

That’s the attitude I was talking about by the way!

And if you don’t like animals it doesn’t make you basically dead inside, it makes you just not like animals for what ever reason 🤣
A lot of people don’t like kids, so what? People don’t like chocolate or the sun, just makes them not like something, Don’t be so dramatic.

Hertsgirl10 · 19/04/2022 08:08

The simple thing would be for people to just train their dogs wouldn’t it?

I mean what’s the issue with that? Everyone’s quick to cry about people not wanting to put up with other people’s dogs but don’t want to just accept that dogs need training.

When babies and kids get ripped apart by these big scary dogs people say it’s the owners, yes of course it’s the owners, the dog gets put down - everyone agrees cos obviously it’s a danger.

But any dog is capable of that with no training so why do people on forums like this act like ..
but puppy dogs are more important than anything on the earth. They come first.

When they don’t even want to they just want to be dogs.
No one would have an issue if a dog was trained and not being a nuisance.

vivainsomnia · 19/04/2022 08:48

The problem with these threads is the generalisations dog haters make putting all dog owners in the same bag.

As a dog owner, I too have issues with some dogs and owners. I get really angry at shit not picked up and have challenged a few owners about it.

I have an issue with dog owners who let their dog do what they want with no care of how it affects people or other dogs. I especially despise owners who get dogs as a toy to entertain their kids and never take them on walks. And let's not talk about dogs left at home for long hours who bark non stop.

I am proud to say that I am a responsible dog owner. We got her during lock down. Only because we'd talked about it for years but wanted at least a couple of months to settle and train a dog and we didn't have that opportunity before lockdown. I'm not a twat because I happened to decide it was a good time to do what we'd wanted to for some time.

My experience is that the majority of dog owners adore their dogs and look after them well and responsibly. Most dog owners hate those who are not.

However, it is really sad that some people think themselves justify to judge everyone with a dog just because they hate them.

ClinkeyMonkey · 19/04/2022 10:06

Next time my son's shoe lands in a big slippery turd, I'll be sure to remind myself that it's only a minority of dog owners who are responsible for this kind of thing. I'm sure I'll feel a whole lot better. Same when a dog circles my ankles or jumps up when I'm walking/running along minding my own business - except I'm not minding my own business, am I? I'm keeping an eye out for the 'small minority' of dog owners whose pets are a bloody nuisance.

All that aside, the dog owners I know have lovely, well behaved animals (well, except my SIL, whose dogs are a pain in the arse). I just think some people really shouldn't own dogs, but it's almost impossible to 'police' this. I agree that training is the key, but this takes time and patience and some people don't want to put the effort in. I also think that people often own dogs with particular characteristics and quirks which don't fit in with their lifestyle, so more research is needed before acquiring a dog, especially with so many people nowadays going for specific breeds and splices of 2 specific breeds. My BIL has a very energetic breed of dog which needs more exercise than most. But he has a bad back and doesn't take it out anywhere near enough. Poor dog.

I agree that it's utterly infuriating but why label all dog owners as problem makers when you do make sure to pick up your dog poo?

It's the generalisation that is infuriating and there's a lot of it on MN.

Mrsmch123 · 19/04/2022 10:27

@Hertsgirl10 totally agree with you!!i dont want some random mut jumping up at me and my baby. Slobbering everywhere and trying to lick me🤢😷

Hertsgirl10 · 19/04/2022 11:04

Says everyone.

If my kid attacks your dog it doesn’t get put to sleep, if your dog attacks my kids it gets destroyed, they’re not the most important things in life, believe it or not and most people that own dogs understand they need training and to be kept under control.
Some don’t and think that they’re here to rule the planet.

XelaM · 19/04/2022 11:37

I have both a kid and a dog and ai love them both (the dog is much friendlier and cuddlier as my kid is now a stroppy 12 Grin ). Other people's kids I couldn't care less about quite frankly. Our dog is a companion toy breed and extremely and well-behaved. If your kid is scared of him just because he runs around in a park not hurting anyone, that's not my problem.

XelaM · 19/04/2022 11:38

extremely friendly*

Whiskeypowers · 19/04/2022 14:45

@Hertsgirl10
Nobody is saying there aren’t baby l behaved dogs and shit owners.
Some of us are just saying not all dog owners and dogs are like that.

You just cannot make that generalisation it’s silly. Surely you can see that!

Dentistlakes · 19/04/2022 16:56

Owners are at the root of all dog problems. Far too many people with dogs they either can’t be bothered to look after properly or don’t know how to look after. There need to be more stringent penalties for bad owners. It’s not acceptable to dump your poo bags on the promise you’ll pick it up on your way back. Your dog, your dog shit. Carry it with you until you find a suitable bin (not someone else’s domestic bin!). Train your dog not to jump up or keep it on a lead. I see many dogs being exercised off lead on the beach where I run every day. The vast majority are impeccably well behaved and just going about their own business enjoying the beach. This is as it should be. The tiny minority (usually weekend walkers, you rarely see a bad owner at 5am!) cause utter chaos. Piss off pedestrians and responsible dog owners alike. Utter twats and imo should have their dogs removed from their care.

y a N N N N b u !!

My most memorable experiences of dogs:

  • Watched my little brother almost being mauled to death by an unleashed dog which burst out from the trees, whilst we were out for a walk as a family (many years ago and the experience has absolutely given me an inbuilt total disdain and fear for dogs)
  • I know a lovely man who DIED because of sepsis from a dog bite (a random dog bit him) - he has left behind TWO small children.
  • My mum was bitten by a random dog and had to go to hospital.
  • Sitting in a park with my family eating a picnic - a dog comes up to us, we try and shoo it away - it pisses ALL OVER US AND OUR PICNIC!!
  • Being at houses where there are dogs as pets and there is disgusting dog hair and the smell of dog everywhere!
  • Dogs constantly running up to me and my kids whilst we are out and about minding our own business. GO AWAY!!!!
  • Dog Poo EVERYWHERE these days !!

Dogs are WILD DANGEROUS ANIMALS ! Yes - they can be trained . Yes - they can be domesticated . HOWEVER they are STILL wild animals and you can NEVER be sure how they will react to a given situation. They are UNPREDICTABLE and instinctive. They are PREDATORS . Denying any of this is IRRESPONSIBLE even if you are a dog owner.
Dogs have SHARP claws , HUGE SHARP teeth , smelly hair , fleas , they are LOUD and DESTRUCTIVE and SCARY !!, etc etc. If you have ANY sense then it is very very easy to see why not everyone LOVEEEES your dog!
Dog poo is disgusting and can land a person in hospital with SERIOUS complications !!
comparing humans to dogs is LUDICROUS !! People arguing that kids are more harmful than dogs !! Get A Grip, You Are Embarrassing Yourselves !! Entitled ignorant owners everywhere who clearly have NO IDEA how their untrained horrible dog can impact others!

TO ALL OWNERS: if you are unable to train your dog and also keep it on a lead in public - do not get a dog. If you are unenthusiastic about picking up faeces - do not get a dog. If you cannot understand that others around you do not like dogs, then do not get a dog.

SICK OF HOW MANY THERE ARE. Everyone seems to have not one but two or three dogs nowadays. All untrained! All with not enough private land to properly train or exercise them adequately.

FED UP OF THE “oh sorry it’s just a puppy” or “it’s just excited” . NOT GOOD ENOUGH - YOURE A TERRIBLE DOG OWNER!! GET IT AWAY FROM ME AND MY FRIGHTENED CHILDREN AND PUT IT ON A LEAD! STOP MAKING OPEN SPACES UNUSABLE FOR THOSE WHO DONT LOVE DOGS !!

That poor little boy Frankie whose stupid parents left him in a static caravan with the beloved family pet. He was KILLED !!
and many other DEVASTATING stories just like his. All because people are UNWILLING TO ADMIT THAT THEIR DOG IS AN ANIMAL !
