To be totally fed up with dogs?

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

@Lockheart it really doesn’t. The Lake District is full of unruly dogs, mostly maiming sheep. It’s a huge problem. If you lived here you would know. Coming on holiday ‘four times’ probably doesn’t allow you to see the real problem . Added to that they cause massive problems with nesting birds and not to mention the poo bag rubbish which is hung in every tree from here to Derwent Water but maybe you miss that because you are lucky enough to visit during a time where it’s been cleared up, by volunteers like me? BTW, You are very welcome.

Last time I was at Keswick market there was a couple with three massive st bernards. Idiots.

Superb rant!

Have to agree, despite having a ''Stinker'' myself. {Small bore bottom, so poos not too onerous to pick up} I understand your frustrations of male dogs pissing up your bins with 'oily' pee.
Plus it kills plants.
@oakleaffy 🤣

And you get the prize for making me laugh out loud and nearly inhale my cheese straw!

Small bore bottom 😆
I wish I had one of those...

Because its a well known fact that working dogs are only interested in doing their job ie are more focused and less likely to be distracted by people or other dogs 🙄
Ah, gotcha. So, I take it your working dog, as with service dogs, smells of roses, and never shits or farts? The venom, misplaced at that, displayed towards dogs, per se, has been entertaining. Not a single thought, when wanting dogs to cease to exist, as to the value of working and service dogs, extending beyond smelling and slobbering.
Pumperthepumper · 15/04/2022 16:53

Well yes, that’s the difference. Service dogs are necessary in a shop or a cafe.

@AnwenDolly

I can just about understand why a lonely person, with no friends or family might be prepared to put up with the stink of a dog and it's disgusting food and shit for the sake of company, but why would anyone else?

Before dog owners get on their high-horse with "My dog is perfectly clean and doesn't smell" let me tell you the truth.

All dogs have a distinctive smell that many people find unpleasant. It doesn't matter how clean and fastidious their owners keep them. People who don't have dogs can smell your dog even if you can't.

I understand that dealing with the fruit of your pets' rear end is not pleasant and I admit that I wouldn't want to pick up a steaming pile either. That is one of the many reasons why I don't have a dog.

The problem is, it seems many dog owners don't want to deal with dog poo either. That is why so many footpaths, fields and public parks are like dog-shit landmines for the unwary.

The great outdoors would be a lot more pleasant if all dog owners could clean up after their pets and remember:

 1. No everyone likes dogs
 2. Some people are frightened of dogs
 3. Some people don't want the attention of your "friendly" dog
 4. Even if you insist it doesn't bite, some people don't want it jumping up at them
 5. Just because you love it, it doesn't mean you can assume other people will too.

Not everyone likes dogs.

Animals smell like animals - who knew!

Humans smell and litter and cause a mess and a nuisance of themselves too, you know.

So they don't shut, fart or stink?

PMSL!

Talk about looking foolish! GrinGrinGrin

oakleaffy · 15/04/2022 17:18

What does your dog actually do?

Merchant banker, 🐾🐾 with a bit of Insider dealing for Sausage??

@CorsicaDreaming
Bore size definitely makes a difference :)
DS looked after two Large Bore bottom dogs, with iffy digestion, and he said it was like handling a massive heavy ''Piping bags'' of sludge.

He did actually heave. :)

CorsicaDreaming · 15/04/2022 17:23

@oakleaffy - now I'm laughing again.
And beginning to heave 😆

Labscollie · 15/04/2022 17:26

@Pumperthepumper

Well yes, that’s the difference. Service dogs are necessary in a shop or a cafe.
As are any dogs, who the owner deems necessary, in order for it to be a dog friendly establishment. That's the owner's choice and only they get to decide what's necessary.
Pumperthepumper · 15/04/2022 17:27

No, a service dog is definitely more of a necessity than a pet.

Labscollie · 15/04/2022 17:40

@Pumperthepumper

Yet service dogs still come with smells and bodily functions, so I guess the drama llamas overlook that. Lucky service dogs. How honoured they are.
Pumperthepumper · 15/04/2022 17:41

Well yes, because that’s the downside of having a necessary service dog.

It’s really weird on a forum aimed at parents for people to have a go at others for choosing to undertake pretty unpleasant tasks because of the wider reward of love and enjoyment they derive from a relationship.

Of course picking up a dogs pop isn’t particularly fun but neither is changing a nappy.

FWIW I love how my dog smells. Not so much his breath or when he farts, but his general smell is great. I’ll never quite understand these pampered princesses who think everything in the world should smell of Jo Malone.

Squeekyturtle · 15/04/2022 18:32

HELLOTHURT I must have missed the bit where I said they don't Shut (presume you mean shit there ? But don't let that stop you accusing someone else of looking foolish!) Fart or stink.

They are bathed regularly and with a good diet and good training they only go in appropriate places and it is cleaned up immediately.

I was responding to the op complaining about dogs jumping up and barking and I was simply making the point that not all dogs do this if they are properly trained and if they aren't trained they shouldn't be off lead.

No need to be so rude.

It’s really weird to try to draw equivalence between parenting and dog ownership. It’s a forum aimed at human parents of human children. Some of those people also own dogs, sure, but the fact it’s a forum for parents is really neither here nor there in relation to views on dogs. And the persistence of dog people in treating their pets as human equivalents is part of the widespread problem discussed in the OP.
CounsellorTroi · 15/04/2022 19:29

The love and trust of a dog is a beautiful thing. I almost pity those who are not open to it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/04/2022 19:49

You lot still banging on about dogs.

Just come back from the Lake District and was very upset to see lots of chained farm dogs in various states of frustration and distress. Can’t see that these owners are any more educated than the uneducated tourists.

Way to have the point go over your head.

The point that you seem to have missed is that humans undertake unpleasant tasks because doing so brings greater rewards.

That is usually true of parenting. And it is usually true of dog ownership.

XelaM · 15/04/2022 20:32

I have a friend who is a dog walker/sitter and she also works in a nursery. She said taking care of a group of dogs and a group of nursery kids is almost identical.

People who don't have dogs will never understand though.

CB1993 · 15/04/2022 20:34
@CounsellorTroi not patronising anyone but they shouldn't be in cafes🤢
@CB1993 or people could just leave their mingy dogs at home🤷🏻‍♀️ Instead of making the rest of us put up with their dogs.
Or you could just stay at home if dogs bother you that much 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

Tulipblacksmith · 15/04/2022 20:37

@XelaM

Being a dog walker is nothing like being a nursery nurse. My father owned kennels and walked all day with dogs. I am laughing at the thought of him being trusted to work with a load of 2 year olds.

Not a chance is it similar.

But if everyone taught both children and dogs to "Sit and Stay" life would be so much easier wouldn't it ?
