To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

@MurmuratingStarling

YANBU *@dogtroubl* I used to quite like dogs (and we always had a dog when I was a child.) But apart from the odd pleasant, cute, friendly dog, I do find them largely a pain in the arse now.

SO many dog owners are utter arseholes. They're right up there with the lycra clad twats who ride 3 abreast on the main roads on cycles. Arrogant, entitled, and thinking everything should revolve around them, and everyone should pander to them, and they can never be wrong.

I have two 3 foot high gate posts at the bottom of my driveway, and I am SO sick of people letting their fucking dogs PISS up them. Ditto my black recycling bins and my wheelie bins. Always a stream of dog piss up them when I go to get them. I am ALSO sick of going out to bring my bins in, and there's fat lump of DOG SHIT by them. Filthy fucking arseholes! (the owners not the dogs!)

And they needn't tell me that they can't HELP where the dogs 'go' because when I am standing by the front door looking down at the road (my house is 6 feet higher than the road,) they never EVER let their dogs piss and shit in front of my drive/up the fence posts then. The dogs attempt to stop, and the owner pulls them away. So they DO have a choice to let them do it there. (Or not!)

The other week, this one woman was letting her dog PISS UP my wheelie bin, and she didn't see me on the driveway watching. He was most of the way through it and she spotted me. She went flame red, muttered 'ooh sorry!' Blush and pulled him away sharply. I just glared at her. I felt like saying 'no worries. I will just come and piss on your front door step later OK?!' If it's acceptable for her mutt to piss up MY wheelie bin, then it's acceptable for me to PISS on her doorstep!

Also, dogs are clingy, whiny, dirty, noisy, messy, and smelly, and your house always stinks of dog (YES IT REALLY DOES!) Also, they're a tie, and they cost a fortune to keep. Vet bills are extortionate for dogs.

AND, as has been said, I am SICK of stupid, stupid bloody dog owners letting their mutts off the lead when they're on a field. Not only can they terrify cattle and sheep (even make them miscarry their young if they're pregnant,) but they also scare people!

I have had many a time when someone's beastly fucking mutt has run up to me and jumped up me, or chased after me, (barking his head off,) and got bloody mud all over me. SO many dog owners have NO control over their dogs, it's shocking! It should be made MUCH harder to get a dog! Hmm

Nah, dogs are not for me. Fuck that. And so many dog owners are SUCH arseholes, that it's put me off dogs! Thankfully, my nearest neighbour to have a dog is 7 houses away. You can still hear the fucker yap yap yapping in the back garden some days though!

Do you feel better after that? Wink
HELLITHURT · 15/04/2022 14:53

@Lockheart

It's truly amazing, I'm walking out and about most days in a variety of locations (city, town, country) and yet somehow I've managed to avoid the obstacle course of dog shit and hordes, nay, swarms! of unruly dogs barking, growling, jumping up at me, scratching my tights, getting muddy paws on me, or sniffing my lunch at a cafe or pub that seem to plague many posters on here.

I suspect some may be being hyperbolic in the extreme.

I do sometimes see dog crap on the pavement, left by irresponsible owners. But I step around it. It doesn't even register as a minor inconvenience.

You and me both!
AnwenDolly · 15/04/2022 14:54

I can just about understand why a lonely person, with no friends or family might be prepared to put up with the stink of a dog and it's disgusting food and shit for the sake of company, but why would anyone else?

Before dog owners get on their high-horse with "My dog is perfectly clean and doesn't smell" let me tell you the truth.

All dogs have a distinctive smell that many people find unpleasant. It doesn't matter how clean and fastidious their owners keep them. People who don't have dogs can smell your dog even if you can't.

I understand that dealing with the fruit of your pets' rear end is not pleasant and I admit that I wouldn't want to pick up a steaming pile either. That is one of the many reasons why I don't have a dog.

The problem is, it seems many dog owners don't want to deal with dog poo either. That is why so many footpaths, fields and public parks are like dog-shit landmines for the unwary.

The great outdoors would be a lot more pleasant if all dog owners could clean up after their pets and remember:

  1. No everyone likes dogs
  2. Some people are frightened of dogs
  3. Some people don't want the attention of your "friendly" dog
  4. Even if you insist it doesn't bite, some people don't want it jumping up at them
  5. Just because you love it, it doesn't mean you can assume other people will too.

Not everyone likes dogs.

Funnily enough I do a bit! Grin

Great post too!

BungleandGeorge · 15/04/2022 15:08

To be fair a lot more dog owners clear up after their dogs these days, there used to be poo absolutely everywhere. Apart from that I think there’s been a shift in attitude around obedience and dogs are less well controlled now. It’s absolutely awful not being able to go into your garden without dogs jumping and woofing at you through the fence.

TeaKlaxon · 15/04/2022 15:08

How sad that on a sunny bank holiday what makes you feel better is posting an expletive laden rant about dogs on an Internet forum.

I don't care about people that don't like the smell of my dog? Doesn't smell to me, so I'm just fine.

Not had anyone refuse an invitation to my house yet, so again that's fine.

Don't like dog smells, don't go into dog friendly establishments.

Also, a bit like changing your own baby's poo nappy, picking up my dogs poo, doesn't bother me at all.

@MurmuratingStarling - you definitely get the prize for "Best Ranting Post about Dogs"🤣

🏅
Gold Medal BRPaD

I actually agree with you too - although perhaps not quite on the same level Grin

I'd get a Ring camera (or even just a fake one set up) and one of those signs "Smile Your On CCTV Smile" and put them up near your bins.... if you got a real one you could print out and laminate a rogues gallery of all the offenders and stick them up along the fence too...

Get off your high horse 🐴

I can't believe this thread is still going and the tangent it has gone off on. Yes dogs shouldn't be jumping up at strangers or stealing food from picnics and the owners should be picking up their poo. But all this talk of hating dogs, that they smell and are dangerous is ridiculous. I know my dog smells like a dog, I just don't care. I dislike the some perfumes but I'm not going to rant on a forum about them. I dislike my neighbours cats crapping on my vegetable plot but I don't think we should ban them. My dog is tiny, he isnt some massive banned breed and isnt around children.

This thread has reminded me of why I feel there is something off about people who don't like dogs.

oakleaffy · 15/04/2022 15:21

Superb rant!

Have to agree, despite having a ''Stinker'' myself. {Small bore bottom, so poos not too onerous to pick up} I understand your frustrations of male dogs pissing up your bins with 'oily' pee.
Plus it kills plants.

Oh and smokers stink! Their vile smoke carries so far, it's also toxic!

Ban them from the great outdoors?

Boo how so dogs smell. More snow flakery. Dogs aren't meant to smell of washing fabric.
Labscollie · 15/04/2022 15:38

@Florenz

Bring back the dog license and enforce it. There should be stringent restrictions on who is allowed to own a dog, just like there is for other animals, and those that break the law should be sent to jail for a long time.
Great. Are you going to start the ball rolling on getting the dog licensed reintroduced?
opalescent · 15/04/2022 15:42

@passthebiscuitsthisway

YANBU.

I can't stand dogs since having children. We live on a beautiful new build estate (which was by no means cheap to buy in). The leafy areas surrounding our house has become a dog toilet. The pavements are laced with dog shit. It's rare I take the pram out without having to clean the wheels upon arriving back home.

We took DS to our local park in winter. He was rubbing up hills and having a ball. Slid down on to a big pile of dog shit.

The way they run around parks and at face level to DS infuriates me. DH is adamant that I don't make DS aware of my anxieties so as not to make him afraid of dogs but there's no way I'd happily let a dog I don't know come up to him - imagine it but him? He would have a permanent disfigurement all because I've to hide my anxieties. I'm sure there would be a bigger problem then.

Typing this, I actually think it's dog owners I can't stand. I know it's not every dog owner. But I've had very few pleasant experiences with dogs.

Good grief. We're talking about a few dogs. When did people become so terrified?

Crappy dog owners are a pain in the arse. Mandatory dog training should be included in some sort of license. Our dog is a working dog and is not the slightest bit interested in other people or dogs and is therefore very easy to walk off lead. I am shocked at dog owners who let their dogs approach other people and wander out of sight off lead meaning they have no idea if they have poo'd somewhere or not !

Because of others irresponsible behaviour it is harder to find places to exercise my fully controlled and trained dog.

Working dog being relevant because? More sanctimony.

Instead of a license - it would be a good idea if there was a council tax supplement for dogs like here

Because its a well known fact that working dogs are only interested in doing their job ie are more focused and less likely to be distracted by people or other dogs 🙄
