To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

I agree with you 100%. I hate dogs in cafes too. I don't want to be sniffed or licked or smelt, I just want to be left alone to drink my coffee in peace. The owners always just laugh and say "oh! he's just being friendly".....

Just leave me alone..........
Go to cafes that don't allow dogs?

Almostwelsh · 14/04/2022 18:09

I don't think dogs are suitable as pets. The whole pet industry is fueling a lot of misery in puppy farming and abandoned animals. The majority of dog owners I see seem to lack suitable environment or care in at least one aspect for their dog, although they'd never admit it.

And taking them into shops and places where food is served is absolutely rank. They smell revolting, it's just that dog owners are nose blind to it.

Guineapigssweak · 14/04/2022 18:10

Dogs are a lot nicer than people. I would have loads if I had the land and money.

KristinaYang · 14/04/2022 18:11

I love all animals and always had dogs growing up but now… I bloody dislike them! I don’t think lockdown etc helped as dogs seem to be the current accessory for many people/families and a lot just don’t look after/train them.
I can not stand dogs off leads in parks/beaches etc.
Owner should have to have a license and pass a care test to have a dog (or even most pets tbh!)

This thread went from "is it OK to be annoyed that my neighbours' dogs bark and scratch the fence" (yes) to "let's kill all the dogs" in 14 pages

Dogs are more loyal than people.

Agree with every word you have said.

I suppose they are company for people...am trying to think of an upside... Oh and brilliant for hearing and sight impaired people. They can diagnose illness and seizures too.

That's the lot
I did mention that Service dogs are amazing! As I said working dogs and service dogs only.

The defensiveness of some in reaction to what I had to say is typical of those who cannot or will not see the effect of thousands upon thousands of dogs in urban areas .

And I am OK but definitely am not a "hun", they were nomadic warriors who terrorized much of Europe and the Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. much like dogs now in fact.

yelauo · 14/04/2022 18:15

@Tulipblacksmith kids on scooters are a liability, it would be better if they were on leads.

But seriously, my child has to get used to being in the world with things she is afraid of. Yes their are loads of crap dog owners, I would be all in favour of mandatory training and licensing for anyone to own a dog, but unlike the US, there are not dog parks to make on lead only an option.

Abs shop ow era and cafes welcome them, so they go in! Don't go into dog friendly places if you don't like it, it's really that simple!
skybluee · 14/04/2022 18:16

I've had to stop going to the nature reserve near here because of bad dog owners unfortunately.

I also get worried they are going to ruin my coat by jumping up. My financial situation has changed dramatically and my coat is a relic of better times. If it is torn I would be distraught as there's no way to replace it. I've had dogs jump up a lot. Sometimes things like that mean a lot... it's made a big difference to how I experience winter as I'm actually warm in it. I couldn't lose that.

I was bitten as a child by a dog which chased me onto our property.

There seem to be so many dogs about now.

TeaKlaxon · 14/04/2022 18:20

@Quincunx

TeaKlaxon That's completely missing the point that if all dog owners were as responsible as you, there wouldn't be any anti-dog rants.

I love dogs fwiw. Used to own them myself and was careful to keep them quiet and take them to suitable places.

I hate the selfish irresponsible owners. Who won't change their behaviour unless they're fined or penalised.

To be clear I also hate irresponsible pet owners too. As much because it is awful for an animal to have a had owner as because of their impact on other people.

I just irresponsible dog owners are a smaller minority than most on here like to claim. Considerably fewer than one in ten dogs I see are badly behaved or irresponsibly owned.

And I don’t agree that if every owner were like me there would be no rants. I have a small well trained dog who rarely barks and has good recall. He has never even inappropriately approached another person, let alone been aggressive to them, who is on lead on roads and streets, around other animals other than dogs (eg he’s always on lead if we’re around livestock).

And even then I’m told I am entitled and irresponsible because he walks alongside me in on the footpath in a park without his lead. Some people are just miserable and will rant against dogs no matter how responsible their owners are.

Phewthemutinyworked · 14/04/2022 18:21

Where I live dogs are not allowed in children’s pay areas and I have never seen that happen.
Also very rarely see dog Pooh because owners are generally very responsible.
I am a dog lover and I find stressy uptight parents more of a problem,particularly the ones that allow their children on bloody scooters on pavements which terrorises my little dog !!

Mumoblue · 14/04/2022 18:21

I always had dogs when I was a kid, but I’ve realised as an adult I’m just not a dog person. It makes me feel like a right git!

And I know it’s because of all the scary dog-related news, the lazy dog owners in my village who leave shit everywhere and my relatives dogs who are extremely needy and sit two inches from you loudly whining and licking their chops if you have any food.

That’s my whining done, and I’ll fully admit that my cat is a little asshole, too. But I’ve just gone off dogs in general. I still think they’re cute! I just can only handle them in small amounts.

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 18:21

@Tulipblacksmith maybe parks should have more fenced off dogs areas. Some london parks do
Our park opposite our house has a field end where everyone walks there dog as none of the kids play there and its away from play areas
My dogs not a people dog when he is out at home he loves then out its a ball
But sometimes we have had kids go running up to him and grab and mum is miles away, its so much better when you get a child ask if he can stroke them
Mines not fussed and would rather get them to throw a ball
It does annoy me when you see people with their kids and then dog in the okay area bit - despite the signs and they have kids so should know better
But its people that are the issue normally not the dog it doesn't know better

TeaKlaxon · 14/04/2022 18:23
@TeaKlaxon

No because I don’t believe dog owners such as yourself because you all trot out the same old shite.

“Oh my dog just minds it’s own business….. it’s fine…it’s so great….”

Jeez I bet your dog shits glitter too?
Still can’t back up your claim that I’m putting my needs before others. Ok then.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 18:41

@TeaKlaxon

You’ve said it yourself up the thread “sod off I’ll walk my dog where I like”.

I am of the opinion that dogs are entitled to be in the park. They are not automatically entitled in my opinion to be off lead on pedestrian paths and close by or in playgrounds. There is usually more than enough adequate space in parks where everyone could be happy.

It doesn’t really matter if your dog is impeccably behaved either, it needs to be a blanket unwritten rule for all. See someone with their dog off lead on the path? Sod it, my dog can be off the lead…. And on and on until you have multiple dogs off lead on the paths causing carnage.

Although in fairness plenty of people do put their dogs on leads on the pedestrian pathways and it is these owners who I deem to be responsible.

@tigger2022

It is nothing to do with training. My spaniel is impeccably well trained. I just have the social awareness to know that despite my dog minding its own business not everyone is a fan of dogs being near them on a pedestrian path.

It’s just called being considerate. Dogs and humans can live alongside each other successfully with a little consideration.

If you don’t agree with that we will have to agree to disagree.

Favourodds · 14/04/2022 18:46

@ancientofmumu Why would anyone be lying about pavements covered in dog shit? I'd really rather they weren't. I have a dog, it's not an inbuilt hatred of dogs leading me to this statement.

But I have a just toddling toddler and so spend a lot of time looking at the pavement. It's everywhere.

Nonsense.

I’m not responsible for other dog owners whose dogs should not be off lead. I’ll take responsibility for my dog and my dog alone. And you have not once been able to explain how my dog being off lead on a path puts my needs above others.

And guess what - we don’t need unwritten rules in parks because there are plenty of written rules - including that dogs who are off lead but under control are permitted in all areas of the park except in the playground, tennis courts and basketball courts.

I abide by those rules even though I believe on-lead dogs should be allowed in those areas.

BoredZelda · 14/04/2022 18:54

I’m with you OP. The only thing worse than the constantly barking dogs, which run at kids “just being friendly” are their entitled arsehole owners.

But every years we’re supposed to feel so sorry for their dogs who are apparently so scared of fireworks.

PegsandBags · 14/04/2022 18:54

There is no way on this earth that I would get up from my warm sofa twice a day come hail or shine and walk a dog. Nope that is far too restricting for me.

But then again I don't have a dog and honestly would struggle to pay vet fees and boarding costs if leaving for more than a day.

I suppose I just don't get it, this total sacrifice of one's life for a hairy smelly, yappy, often dangerous, defecating ball of fur/hair.

How do you all do it? Do you ever wish you didn't have to do the walkies twice a day? Just wondered, as I would find that discipline quite difficult personally.

BoredZelda · 14/04/2022 18:57

And you have not once been able to explain how my dog being off lead on a path puts my needs above others.

My disabled daughter would have meltdowns if a dog was off lead nearby. Because she doesn’t know if your dog will run at her or not. We used to have to avoid parks for years when she was younger. She can deal with it better now but still isn’t happy with it. That’s how it puts your needs above hers.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 18:58

@TeaKlaxon

I have discussed it, in a broader sense. Dog owners copy other dog owners (many really do not know the social etiquette) so if you can’t grasp that that’s

not my problem. Also this is mumsnet, I do not take what people say as gospel, especially someone who seems so hell bent on taking every deemed slight as someone who is indulging in an “anti dog rhetoric”. I mean talk about being dramatic.

There are deluded, irresponsible dog owners out there and you sound like one of them.

Hmm “off lead and under control” ….
Well that’s debatable isn’t it?….. you really are one of those aren’t you?

“Don’t worry my dogs fine….. Hmm

Isn’t it amazing how everybody assumes this about their dogs. Like I said, the dog delusion is real. Love is blind as they say.

Meanwhile the more rational dog owners are considerate to all and put their dogs on leads on pedestrian paths.

pedestrian being the key word.

coronafiona · 14/04/2022 19:00

@Beecham

YANBU

Dogs are a major nuisance these days. Not to mention those that are let off leads in the open countryside and kill livestock, and disturb and kill wildlife.

Dog owners should need a license and a mandatory training course imo.

Absolutely this. They're everywhere and so is their 💩. Disgusting.
yelauo · 14/04/2022 19:02

@BoredZelda kids have to get used to sharing the world with things that scare them.

Mine screams at scooters, doesn’t mean scooter users are putting their needs before my kid’s.
