To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

See this is the issue - there's nowhere you can take them where there aren't people whinging about the presence of dogs. I see SO many dogs every day and almost never get approached by them and almost never see random poos lying around. The vast majority of dogs are minding their own business, having a good time, and many humans could learn from their example.

Veryverycalmnow · 14/04/2022 17:48

I can understand people liking dogs but I can't understand them thinking everyone else should.
They bite people and bark loudly. It's a personal preference but I don't like those qualities.

Itsbackagain · 14/04/2022 17:48

Not sure why you're fed up with dogs - it's the owners that are to blame although not sure why you kept visiting a relative with your child who is scared of dogs and you could put up your own fence you know.

TeaKlaxon · 14/04/2022 17:48

@Quincunx

All dogs shit and bark a lot, even chihuahua poo is vile. Shitting and barking esp. when around children is always behaving inappropriately and even the most well-trained dogs do it. They need council-run fenced-off areas to exercise the dogs in and massive fines for going to public parks or not picking up. Because too many dog owners are irresponsible and are compromising the quality of life for so many people. Imagine being blind or in a wheelchair and unable to dodge the mounds of shit everywhere.
It's just not true that all dogs bark a lot.

Mine gives a single bark occasionally if he hears someone at the door before flopping back down on his bed. He doesn't even bark at e.g. squirrels or cats.

This is the sort of nonsense that dog owners have to put up with - just blatant lies to justify anti-dog rants.

Arealnumber · 14/04/2022 17:49

Yes I'm fed up with them too. They're everywhere where I live (Melbourne) and the racket they produce, never mind the horrendous levels of excrement (ungreen, unsustainable) really gets me down

HowIsItMarchAlready · 14/04/2022 17:50

We have dogs and if they bark they are made to immediately come back inside. We pick up after them because stepping in poo is disgusting and nobody should put up with it. Shame our neighbours don't do the same when their kids are in the garden and scream their heads off 'because they are playing.'

OMG12 · 14/04/2022 17:51

@Trixiefirecracker

I think it would be better if we followed some of the European laws, specific dog-only parks/areas. Muzzled on public transport and kept on leash while outdoors, no one under 18 to walk dog with out an adult. Most of these are German laws, good old Germany. They like things under control. 😁
Yep good old Germany with their means of control! Nothing has ever gone wrong there has it?
TeaKlaxon · 14/04/2022 17:51

@Veryverycalmnow

I can understand people liking dogs but I can't understand them thinking everyone else should. They bite people and bark loudly. It's a personal preference but I don't like those qualities.
Most dogs don't bite people. Many don't bark loudly, and most that do bark loudly do so fairly infrequently.

I don't particularly care if people like dogs. It's like anything else I like - of course if I like it, I think its great and think people are missing out on it. But I really don't mind people not liking it.

But there is a difference between 'I don't like dogs' and 'I'm going to pretend that perfectly reasonable behaviour is an affront to decency because I don't like dogs, and actively argue for the lives of dogs and their owners to be made worse because of my dislike of dogs'.

Trixiefirecracker · 14/04/2022 17:52

@tlgger you clearly don’t live in the Lakes, hundreds of them here and the livestock worrying is a real problem. Poo bags hung in trees is a real favourite.

PegsandBags · 14/04/2022 17:53

Dogs should not be pets. They should not be bred for the oohs and aahs. They are not meant to be domesticated. There is hardly enough room for people in urban areas for humans not to mind dogs.Working dogs and service dogs only please, which is what they are superb at.

I would not harm a dog, but I dislike them intensely. They take over everything in parks, on beaches, on the streets and so on.

Ok if dog runs and special parks are provided for urban dogs and everything else is left for humans, but that doesn't happen. There isn't enough room for both in urban settings.

They can be bloody dangerous killers too, which is bloody awful. Any upside at all?

Quincunx · 14/04/2022 17:54

TeaKlaxon That's completely missing the point that if all dog owners were as responsible as you, there wouldn't be any anti-dog rants.

I love dogs fwiw. Used to own them myself and was careful to keep them quiet and take them to suitable places.

I hate the selfish irresponsible owners. Who won't change their behaviour unless they're fined or penalised.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 17:54

@TeaKlaxon

No because I don’t believe dog owners such as yourself because you all trot out the same old shite.

“Oh my dog just minds it’s own business….. it’s fine…it’s so great….”

Jeez I bet your dog shits glitter too?

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 17:55

@TeaKlaxon I'd be more interested to hear where these people think dogs ARE ok to be

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 17:57

@PegsandBags so who's going to clean up all the wild dog poo or train wild puppies to behave if we can't have them as pets? you?

yelauo · 14/04/2022 17:58

@PegsandBags u ok hun?

TheArtfulBlogger · 14/04/2022 17:58

@PegsandBags

Agree with every word you have said.

I suppose they are company for people...am trying to think of an upside... Oh and brilliant for hearing and sight impaired people. They can diagnose illness and seizures too.

That's the lot

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 18:00

Did the cat post upset you ?

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 18:01

I would understand it if this was about badly trained dogs. But people are arguing that even well-trained dogs (i.e. the vast majority, although you deny they even exist) shouldn't be allowed in people's gardens OR in the local park OR in the local green spaces OR in the countryside. Let me tell you if we had to lock all of our dogs in the basement forever they'd DEFINITELY bark then 😂

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 18:01

@tigger2022

Large fields
Farms
Parks (away from the paths and the playgrounds) strictly on a lead on paths, irrespective of size as we all know @TeaKlaxon doesn’t give two hoots at the potential for scaring kids (because her dog is so small…. and so great).

If you cannot provide any of the above do not get a dog. Ownership is not a god given right.

TheChosenTwo · 14/04/2022 18:01

Yanbu at all. I don’t really mind dogs, I certainly would never have one and I don’t want them in my house.
But I can tolerate them if out and about and one comes up to me etc.
Unfortunately many owners allow their dogs to become a nuisance and don’t train them in any way. A bit like parents really!
Anyway, yanbu to be pissed off. Someone walks their dogs round here and I often leave my front door to find a steaming dog shit next to the lamppost by my house. Revolting.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 14/04/2022 18:02

@dogtroubl

I agree with you 100%. I hate dogs in cafes too. I don't want to be sniffed or licked or smelt, I just want to be left alone to drink my coffee in peace. The owners always just laugh and say "oh! he's just being friendly".....

Just leave me alone..........

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 18:02

@hepaticanobilis really see when I was growing up many just let their dogs roam and there was no real picking up of dog mess

yelauo · 14/04/2022 18:05

@Tulipblacksmith my child is scared of scooters since an older child ploughed into her. Should they all be banned in public places because she is scared?

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 18:07

@yelauo

So you think comparing scooters and dogs is a good analogy?

I have never once said dogs should be banned in public places? I have said they should be on a lead whilst on paths.

A) not rocket science

B) the considerate thing to do.

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 18:08

@Tulipblacksmith - this is so heartless. Why would I need to go and find a random farm (can you imagine poor farmers having to take in 1000 dogs suddenly banned from parks???) when my dog is a nuisance to nobody? It's called training. If you cba to do it then sure, you shouldn't keep animals. But for those of us who do bother and who are causing harm to nobody, why are you being so judgemental! My dog is great at minding her own business, so many humans could learn from her.
