To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

@yelauo

Goodness are you still referring to scooters and dogs being an equivalent? Awful analogy.

It might be easy for you to say but your kid sounds like s/he doesn’t have additional needs or isn’t disabled like the previous posters.

There are a myriad of reasons why children or adults for that matter might be wary of dogs, it’s just some people cannot expand their minds to that and place the ownership for that problem onto the person (as opposed to just being you know…. Considerate?)

It is no major hardship for a dog owner to put their dog on a lead on a pedestrian path. No one’s saying don’t take them to the park full stop?

The entitlement !!

Hippoevens · 14/04/2022 19:10

YABU dogs are better than people

Mreggsworth · 14/04/2022 19:11

I just had my dog out for an off lead walk around the park, he has a play with a couple of other off lead dogs, a mum with her son asked if he could throw a ball for them, which he did.

All poo was picked up, no pedestrians walk was interrupted, no dogs attacked, all dogs on lead when an on lead dog passed by. Passers by seemed to smile and enjoy watching the dogs play as they are not miserable sods.

Not saying there aren't issues with dog ownership I just firmly believe the benefits massively outweigh the negatives. And I am so happy that I don't know anyone in real life with this twisted anti dog mumsnet attitude, life is much better without it.

Manekinek0 · 14/04/2022 19:14

@PegsandBags I love being outside and live in the countryside. My little dog is my best friend. He is a little bit smelly but definitely not dangerous. Yes I have to pick up after him and hoover more but he brings me so much joy, it is completely worth it. I suppose people who don't want children have similar arguments and it just boils down to personal preferences.

I can't have children with my DH. I don't have the baby groups, the school run, the additional finances. We have very different hobbies. The dog is something that brings us both together and makes us feel like a family.

TiddleyWink · 14/04/2022 19:17

It’s literally impossible to take my children for a picnic in any of the parks and open spaces around us because the second we open any food we’re constantly approached by off lead dogs trying to take our food. Even if they don’t manage to take it they’ve shoved their dirty noses all over it after sniffing goodness knows what, which means it’s now inedible.

So my children will have a childhood without the basic pleasure of an outdoor picnic because the rights of dogs to do what the fuck they want apparently trump our right to enjoy outdoor spaces in peace.

And yet the entitled dog owners continue to insist their dogs never bother anyone Hmm

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 19:19

@Manekinek0

That’s not really the issue being discussed though. Apparently if you don’t agree with dogs being off lead on a pedestrian path it is somehow construed on here that you must hate dogs.

I am sure that is true for some people but I myself have always owned dogs, just more responsibly than some here.

My best friend cannot have children and so has devoted her time to caring for her two dogs. They are treated like kings, they make her very happy and they are beautiful dogs. She agrees though that dogs should be on leads on paths and very close by to childrens playgrounds. Particularly when most parks have more than enough space for off lead running/playing/mixing with other dogs.

It’s not rocket science.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 19:21

@TiddleyWink

And they will most certainly continue to do so that’s for sure. It’s part of the entitlement.

Manekinek0 · 14/04/2022 19:24

@Tulipblacksmith I was clearly replying to another poster who said they didn't understand why anyone would want a dog and what benefits they could have.

I do always keep my dog on a lead. There are some dogs round here that are amazingly well trained who don't need to be on a lead. They don't come up to me, my dog or anyone else and just walk next to their owner, the same as they would if on a lead.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 19:26

@Manekinek0

Doesn’t matter, they should still be on a lead on a pedestrian path.

BoredZelda · 14/04/2022 19:30

kids have to get used to sharing the world with things that scare them.

Thank you for confirming you believe your wants and needs trump everyone else's.

Manekinek0 · 14/04/2022 19:30

@Tulipblacksmith it depends on the law. Some paths you do, some you don't. If it isn't breaking the law then it's fine. Your opinion is just that, your opinion.

narcdad · 14/04/2022 19:32

I've never seen a dog pick up it's own poo so you can't really blame the dogs for that.

Sounds like a neighbour (people) issue, rather than a dog issue.

narcdad · 14/04/2022 19:33

🤣 post of the day!
Mreggsworth · 14/04/2022 19:34

Isn't it more entitled to believe only humans are allowed to enjoy the world

LolaStrange · 14/04/2022 19:35

I don't think yabu to be fed up with dogs. Not everyone likes rats, and if you say you don't want to be near any pet rat everyone would say that's fine, but if you don't want other people's dogs nvading your space you must be an awful person.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 19:36

@Mreggsworth

Oh for goodness sake I am referring to pathways ….. I am not saying dogs do not deserve to be outside.

Sweet lord 😂. It’s a minor inconvenience for most dog owners.

Plus a lot of dog owners definitions of “highly trained” is seriously debatable. The recall is often woeful and the dog 9 times out of 10 never listens on the first command.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 19:38

@Manekinek0

It is my opinion yes. I believe that people should be considerate, and I don’t believe putting your dog on a lead on a pedestrian path really is that much of a massive hardship. It isn’t.

Bewilderbeest · 14/04/2022 19:38

I can’t go to the park with my baby in London because of uncontrolled dogs bounding up to the pram and shoving their faces into it or bouncing up at me when I’m carrying him. Last week some moron with a young Alsatian took it off the lead in a Tube carriage and it walked straight up to my 4 month old in his sling and stuck its face right against him. The response was “oh he loves kids”. DS is just a packed lunch to a dog and I’m sick of people who don’t realise that an animal needs to be under control in public spaces. It’s just basic manners. I used to like dogs and had one as a child/teen but horrible owners have made me hate them now.

Buffyfan26 · 14/04/2022 19:39

I’m very scared of dogs and don’t like them!

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 14/04/2022 19:39

@Tulipblacksmith your MO really is just to get irrationally angry when people offer an analogy to elucidate their point. Apparently we are all terrible, terrible people because we compare dogs to children, men…and scooters. We’re not allowed to compare dogs to anything apparently, lest we contextualise the issue and highlight inconsistencies in the anti-dog drivel that is regularly trotted out on threads like these. It’s boring.

Mreggsworth · 14/04/2022 19:40

You have to go on pathways to get to places though. I take my dog to the park and let him play in the field, but I have to go on the path to get to the field. How would that be avoided Hmm

Pumperthepumper · 14/04/2022 19:41

But comparing a dog with something that isn’t a dog isn’t highlighting inconsistencies, it’s just comparing two totally different things.

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 14/04/2022 19:43

Two totally different things can be compared, you know.

Pumperthepumper · 14/04/2022 19:44

How?

JanisMoplin · 14/04/2022 19:44

Yes, like dogs on this thread have been compared to Attila the Hun:)
