To be totally fed up with dogs?

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

Please don’t tarnish dog owners with the same brush - I have never understood owners not cleaning up after their dogs - are they squeamish of picking up their pets poo ? - have they never changed a nappy ? I don’t get it?

elitecomplainer · 14/04/2022 17:36

It makes me sad that I can't walk my favourite countryside feeling safe any more because there are always a few (5-6 cars) people walking big energetic dogs off the lead who don't recall them 1) when they see us approaching or 2) when the dogs are running up to us, chasing us, barking at us,.

Both these situations require the owners to recall their dogs and get them under control, but they don't. They think their dogs are more important and have more right to walk in the countryside than us humans. PS. it is not their land. There is one woman with a black lab who lets it chase people and growl at them, she is always very far behind and it takes her ages to catch up, then she verbally abuses the people who are cowering in fear at her 'gun dog' who would never bite (just chase, pin in a corner and growl). Another man has a very long-legged red setter that he allows to run all over the farmer's field or deep into the woods, far out his sight or control. Utterly terrifying.

But your dog can still get adequate exercise away from the playgrounds and the paths so the point you are making is a mute one because you could respect other people whilst ensuring your dog gets enough exercise.

You’re just too entitled to do that and believe that you and your dog own the park because you pay council tax.
I do respect other people though.

Firstly, because no one is in any way impacted by my dog being off lead on the path. If they were, he would be on the lead.

Secondly, because very often, fewer people encounter my dog on the path than they would if I went into the green part of the park, because the often the paths are quieter when there are people playing football etc.

You can keep pretending that a well behaved, small dog with no interest in other people being off lead on the path in a park is some massive affront to your rights - but you keep just looking like a miserable whinger.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 17:36

@TeaKlaxon

I own a spaniel in a built up area and I am able to provide her with adequate space by driving her out to big fields. I do not own a farm or have my own land.

That’s just called being a responsible owner.

If you cannot get access to large spaces for dogs then you seriously need to consider wether dog ownership is right for you.

There is no reason why your dog can’t be let off the lead in the park away from the playground and the path. Simple really.

JanisMoplin · 14/04/2022 17:36

Yeah, bowing out of this ridiculously angry thread with posters spoiling for a dog fight and heading to the park to pet more dogs. Maybe I live in a phenomenally dog shit free part of Central London or have a phenomenally high tolerance to dog shit.

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 17:37

@Tulipblacksmith

You have to laugh though at people on here

“My dogs off a lead even on the path but it won’t bother you, it will ignore you”

Yeah right. These are the same owners who loudly proclaim “don’t worry my dogs fine it wont hurt you, no problem here”.

The dog delusion is real people.

tbh I have the opposite problem. My dog has no interest in anyone else, but loads of randoms want to pet her. No, go away lol.
Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 17:38

@TeaKlaxon

Nar, I’m not whinging, just calling out an entitled, deluded dog owner who believes her and her dogs needs trump everyone else’s.

Yep you do you I’m sure you piss off far more people with your dog than what I do with mine 😁.

Keep making the same point and I'll keep giving the same answer: I have access to plenty of space for my dog. In the local park (and our garden for more routine outdoor time and toileting, but not for proper exercise).

So I have access to plenty space for my dog. Thanks for your concern.

Trixiefirecracker · 14/04/2022 17:40

I think it would be better if we followed some of the European laws, specific dog-only parks/areas. Muzzled on public transport and kept on leash while outdoors, no one under 18 to walk dog with out an adult. Most of these are German laws, good old Germany. They like things under control. 😁

Unless and until you can explain how a small, well-behaved five year old dog with no interest in other humans and who, in five years, has never chased, jumped on or even barked at a human in the park being off lead on a footpath in the park infringes on any one else's needs, then you're just trotting out the same miserable whinge.

tigger2022 · 14/04/2022 17:41

I don't get why people hate dogs so much. You probably don't even notice most of them.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 14/04/2022 17:41

YANBU

I refer you to my post on the cat hate thread earlier...the one where I was pinned to a wall, at the age of 4, by an Alsatian.

I'll stick to snuggly cats, thanks.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 17:42

@JanisMoplin

Enjoy your phenomenally dog shit free area of Central London. All is not as rosy here in the midlands. Here’s an actual photo from the football FB page from the poor sod who cleaned all this up

elitecomplainer · 14/04/2022 17:42

It isn't OK to take your energetic dogs out to the countryside for exercise if you are not willing to recall them and get them under control if you encounter other humans.

The other humans have a right to exercise in the countryside as well without off-lead dogs harassing them.

The countryside is not purely there so you can exercise the dog(s) that you own but don't have enough space of your own to adequately exercise.

Quincunx · 14/04/2022 17:43

All dogs shit and bark a lot, even chihuahua poo is vile. Shitting and barking esp. when around children is always behaving inappropriately and even the most well-trained dogs do it. They need council-run fenced-off areas to exercise the dogs in and massive fines for going to public parks or not picking up. Because too many dog owners are irresponsible and are compromising the quality of life for so many people. Imagine being blind or in a wheelchair and unable to dodge the mounds of shit everywhere.

Tulipblacksmith · 14/04/2022 17:43

@TeaKlaxon

You keep telling yourself that. I have more consideration for others. Small kids can be scared of small dogs too you know. But like I said you do you.

Blossomandbee · 14/04/2022 17:43

Yanbu. I've nothing against dogs but I agree they're a nuisance now. Very few outdoor places left that are dog free, not everyone is comfortable with off lead dogs roaming around.

TeaKlaxon · 14/04/2022 17:43

@tigger2022

Precisely.

One in three households in the UK has a dog.

The vast, vast majority are responsibly owned and well behaved.

Also the USA: they have dog parks (lots of them) for exercising dogs.

The other parks are for humans.

Seems to work find for the dogs of the USA.

junglejane66 · 14/04/2022 17:44

Being a responsible owner I've trained my dog to do this. The cat is proving more difficult

elitecomplainer · 14/04/2022 17:44

Or designated areas of human parks.

In the UK, all parks are dog parks (with the exception of a couple of towns where dog parks were tried, but the rights of dogs won over the rights of humans).
@TeaKlaxon

So you still can't tell me how a small, well behaved dog with no interest in humans and a five year history of never approaching humans impinges on anyone's needs by being off lead on a footpath in a park?

That's a pretty basic requirement if your claim that I put my needs above those of others is to stack up.

Trixiefirecracker · 14/04/2022 17:45

@jungle my dog used to eat the cat poo, so that was that sorted. 😂

pattish · 14/04/2022 17:46

I see loads of kids misbehaving in the park but nobody expects their parents to come and tie them up!

Presumably they’re not pooing, jumping up on strangers or eating other peoples picnics?

CurlyBurley · 14/04/2022 17:47

Dog shit everywhere here. I live in a rural area and dog walkers love to come here and walk their dogs. Unfortunately, many of them leave their dog shit all over the path. Absolutely revolting.
