Just when you think this government can't get any worse - now they are going to send asylum seekers to Rwanda

I didn't vote for this shower. The problem with people arriving (if they make it) in small boats needs addressing but AIBU that sending them on a one way trip to Rwanda isn't the answer?

@BewareTheLibrarians the whole thing seemed quite sophisticated, and it appeared to me that the set up was get in by any means necessary (boats were discussed, although not his particular route), go under the radar or overstay your welcome. Be facilitated initially by people you know from home who have settled status. Then find a U.K. woman who can get a roof over your head and work cash in hand until you decide to marry her and stay or go back home.

He had come from a nice family, had education, and there was nothing to flee from. He just wanted to go through this “right of passage” as he saw it and to make money. That struck me as wrong.

It’s thwarting the people who actually do need help to my mind, so it needs to be stopped. I still don’t feel comfortable about Rwanda though….

It stinks

AnnesBrokenSlate · 15/04/2022 02:41

Part of the reason he's able to throw this dead cat on the table is because the other parties are too busy making themselves unelectable or ignoring all the issues with the current asylum system.

Of course, Rwanda is a ridiculous idea but now everyone will froth about it and no other party will feel the need to present a working solution to the refugee crisis. The current crop of Tories are a bunch of grubby, money-grabbing charlatans.

But spare me the other parties' angst when they completely refuse to engage with the issues around asylum, refugees, illegal wars, aid budgets being redirected to defence and everything else that is contributing to the awful situations that create migrant issues.

Clumsyvolcano · 15/04/2022 02:59

A racist in power makes for a racist population…

AnnesBrokenSlate · 15/04/2022 03:02

What a considered contribution to the debate. That will definitely help refugees.

Trainbear · 15/04/2022 07:31

And still the deliberate misunderstanding of asylum seeker, refugee, economic refugee is not clarified.

Doris86 · 15/04/2022 08:04

@BewareTheLibrarians I’m well aware that most migrants stay in mainland Europe rather than come to the UK. My point being that the 8% that do cross the channel are coming here by choice, so the argument that they are trying to get to safety in the UK does not stand up.

Indeed you make the point yourself that the ones coming here are choosing to do so because they have family here.

Merrymouse · 15/04/2022 08:11

Of course refugees want to go to a place where they have family. Wouldn’t you?

Merrymouse · 15/04/2022 08:21

Some information on Rwanda.

Kagame has been in power for 22 years and won his last election (2017) with 98% of the vote.

Same sex marriages are not recognised.

If Boris Johnson can’t recognise why that should raise questions about whether this is a good place to send asylum seekers for processing, I have some wall paper to sell him.

And that’s before you get into the logistics of how this actually operates.

Alexandra2001 · 15/04/2022 08:25

@AnnesBrokenSlatenes I think you find that Labour have put forward plenty of ideas on migration... so increase foreign so their economies flourish, create more legal ways to come here, reform labour market so that illegal working is much harder, assist EU countries that take far more refugees and work to be able to return refugees.

Of course had Boris not campaigned to leave the EU, we could return economic migrants... why do you think we now have so much illegal migration from the EU now?

Sure we didn't often do that pre brexit but we could have, it was our decision not too.

As for Dead Cat, the tory press always ensure they focus on the latest BJ announcement, its difficult to counter.

Alexandra2001 · 15/04/2022 08:28

Sky is reporting the hostels haven't even been built nor has the private firm that owns the sites, agreed to sell or lease.... the pictures we all have seen are of an ex holiday complex.. one off.

World Service saying locals very angry as their economy is poor and they have no real functioning health service or education system, so all these people will place huge strain on local services.

Parker231 · 15/04/2022 08:36

Next weeks PMQ’s are going to be entertaining. Kier Starmer is brilliant at using his questions so effectively against Boris. With this latest disaster and Partygate, Boris is going to be totally useless.
The Rwanda idea is there just to appeal to the more racist Brexit voters as a ploy to cover up all the Tory disasters over the last couple of years

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2022 09:06

The DM is reporting this morning that the scheme would be backdated to include people who have arrived since the beginning of the year. So these will include people who have already been seen by doctors, are on essential medication, have lawyers, have a pregnant British partner, have a same sex partner etc etc. They are going to be able to make successful legal challenges to deportation to Rwanda. This is absolutely not going to work.

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2022 09:13

@Alexandra2001 no surprise that the local people are opposed. Either this group of people is going to be sharing almost non-existent healthcare services etc with the locals, or they will have access to services which the locals have no access to. Neither will go down well obviously. I will say again, Rwanda is a very poor country. Levels of poverty (and concomitant corruption) that most people in the UK, even these days, will have little conception of. That makes a difference.

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2022 09:16

Here's a stat for you. There are about 13 million people in Rwanda. There are 13 psychiatrists in Rwanda.

Fulmine · 15/04/2022 09:18

We come back to the fact that the government know perfectly well this is not going to work, but it will do for now as a distraction from Johnson's crimes and lying to Parliament. And ultimately they will tell their more racist supporters that it's all the fault of lefty lawyers being paid a pittance fortune on legal aid.

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2022 09:20

@Fulmine spot on

MarshaBradyo · 15/04/2022 09:20

I have been reading re Australian system.

This is different (if pp on why us correct) and I’m not sure it will even happen but the history of Nauru is interesting

From a very rich island to a bankrupt one it was the latter that meant it relied on Aus for income for the scheme

magicofthefae · 15/04/2022 09:22

@GhostofMaudFlanders

But 'Boris' said something good about women, once, despite treating wonen like shit all his life, so Mumsnet will be voting Tory no matter what over atrocities they commit..
Exactly this! The mind boggles why any non-millionaire, non male, would vote against their own interests!
littledrummergirl · 15/04/2022 09:26

daimbarsatemydogsbone

120 million from the magic money tree
Rishi Rich wife is going to pay taxes here. Now we know why.

Keep the £20 a week uplift for the feckless poor nah, chuck it at a country with a poor human rights record.
Perfect!

littledrummergirl · 15/04/2022 09:28

Sorry, what's a non male? I'm not a non male, I'm a woman and I have an identity of my own.

theDudesmummy · 15/04/2022 09:29

Follow the money...a small group of people will be making a lot of money from this even though it is not actually going to happen. There will be some business people and builders in Rwanda, friends of the president obviously. And there will be some Tories. There will be a few headlines about some people who made millions from a failed scheme (as for Track and Trace, PPE etc), and then people will move on. And keep voting Tory.

CounsellorTroi · 15/04/2022 09:30

Yeah send vulnerable people to a genocidal country. Great.
