Walked out of cinema mid movie

Took my dd to see the secrets of dumbledore. Really didn't enjoy it, wasn't our thing and the cinema was boiling on top of that, I was burning up and so uncomfortable. Daughter agreed she wasn't enjoying the film so we walked out about 45 minutes into it (discreetly I hope). Both agreed once out that we had no idea what was going on, the storyline was difficult to follow.

Obviously we were home early and my husband was outraged (no exaggeration) that we had paid money to see a film and walked out mid way. He said it's rude and a waste of money and not teaching my dd anything Confused I think he's mad and considering this particular film is 2.5 hours long, I'd rather not sit and bear it.

YANBU and your dh is being ridiculous. It's rude to whom exactly?! Also how on earth is it privileged? Classic sunk cost fallacy - you've paid the money and you're not getting it back either way. You gain literally nothing by sitting there not enjoying yourself!

londonrach · 13/04/2022 22:46

I sat once through the worse movie I ever saw called the secretary. I stayed as with dB who now DH and his friends and their other halfs. Afterwards every single person in our group said we wish we known as it turned out we all wanted to leave ...as a result I never stay now ...what's the point. Yanbu. You taught your daughter to leave if something isn't right for her and to be strong and say that. Great lesson for her

NeedleNoodle3 · 13/04/2022 22:47

I absolutely loved The Secretary.

mathanxiety · 13/04/2022 22:48

YANBU.

They give you your money back if you leave up to an hour after the start of a movie here (US).

Your H is being silly. Is he always this cranky?

ElenaSt · 13/04/2022 22:48

I’ve fallen asleep in more cinemas than your husband had had hot dinners!

I walked out of Pulp Fiction with friends as it was boring crap but then returned with a chap I was dating on another day and sat through it but mentally drifted off as best I could.

gillys · 13/04/2022 22:48

Was this at an Odeon cinema ?
We saw the same film on Monday & it was sooo hot in the cinema.
Made for uncomfortable viewing.
I complained to the manager after but she just said thanks for letting us know !

LetHimHaveIt · 13/04/2022 22:50

I've very seldom walked out of a film - but I made an honourable exception for 'The Sweetest Thing' with Diaz, Blair and Applegate. Managed about 20 mins. I still have no words.

My mum gutted out 4/5ths of 'Sicario' before she couldn't take any more. I had to stay and tell her what happened. Most stressful film experience ever. Great film, though.

Given the behaviour in cinemas these days, nudging your companion and asking them quietly in 25 words or less, if they want to go, is the least of it. Absolutely fine. How do people think these decisions are being communicated? With bullhorns? Using semaphore?

doggyweewee · 13/04/2022 22:52

@NotTheOW

How I'd it rude? It's not live theatre. Dumbledore can't see you.
This one made me laugh! Grin
Tumbleweed101 · 13/04/2022 22:52

Just seen it tonight. I definitely think the beginning only really makes sense if you've seen the other two so I can understand why you struggled if you hadnt seen the first two. This wasn't my favorite of the three films but think it got better as it went on.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 13/04/2022 22:52

@Thisismynamenow

It is not a trilogy. It is a quintet.

It was planned as 5 movies. They are still planning to make all 5. So you've got another 2 to sit through.

LaurenKelsey · 13/04/2022 22:52

Is your husband always such a control freak?

PyongyangKipperbang · 13/04/2022 22:52

Yeah he was totally working up to a weapons grade wank and you fucked it up :o

sleepishooz · 13/04/2022 22:54

I agree with @PyongyangKipperbang he was not happy you were home early

Yes it was an odeon cinema. The heat was unbearable, to the point I thought I was having some type of medical emergency cause the sweat was dripping off me, I was holding my bottle of water to my neck, was horrible.

Life is too short to sit through films you don't enjoy. You've already paid the money, so it's actually stupider to sit in discomfort and boredom than it is just to walk out.
I've walked out of quite a few films.

Your husband is weird.

SenecaFallsRedux · 13/04/2022 22:56

Years ago, DH and I both walked out of Bolero. Life is just too damned short.

YANBU, OP

TargusEasting · 13/04/2022 22:56

Your DH needs to go and watch The Sunk Cost Fallacy. Great film and it will change his future forever.

It was planned as 3 according to JKR

CinstonWhurchill · 13/04/2022 22:57

@distilledwater i think your DH just wanted some time alone at home , to have a tommy.

In all seriousness, look at what you can all do as a family to give each other some space. It all sounds a bit claustrophobic tbh.

SoItWas · 13/04/2022 22:57

Ds and I enjoyed this movie, but if ds had really wanted to leave midway through, I would have.

Doggirl · 13/04/2022 22:58

Never walked out of a film, but I did once throw a novel across the room with "Oh FFS!" (Death of Grass). Book stayed there a few weeks.
Then there was the self-styled 'protest group' spouting such bollox at a small festival that I wanted to walk out. Thing is that I was pedalling the bike-powered amplifier, and I didn't want to draw that much attention that the sound going dead would have. But the person who took over from me wasn't a strong cyclist, so it went a bit quieter anyway. Bik

Justmuddlingalong · 13/04/2022 22:58

Did he sell a kidney to raise funds for the tickets?

CinstonWhurchill · 13/04/2022 22:59

"@VivienneDelacroix Your husband is weird".

No, i think the Op's husband just wants some time to himself, at home.

Longdistance · 13/04/2022 22:59

If it’s a shit film, it’s a shit film 🤷🏼‍♀️

Shabtipup · 13/04/2022 23:00

Not as bad as my dad taking me (7yo) and a gaggle of other 7yo girls to see a film and falling asleep during the film snoring loudly 😂😂

(Its not rude to leave a film at all)
