Inspired by another thread but mainly by my own experiences today.
In February it was 20p to use the public loos at our favourite seaside town. Today it has doubled to 40p! There are now contactless points incase you don't have any cash. 40p to pee!
Mr Kipling cherry Bakewells have jumped to £1.90 in Asda and I'm sure they used to be £1.40 or sometimes even £1 and that was only a few weeks back. Cake isn't essential I know, but peeing is. Things have gone up generally but the odd pence here and there isn't always noticed but these are huge jumps.

The rising petrol costs doesn't really affect me as I only ever put in £20

Wow, they really do walk among us. I think it was Churchill who didn't say "the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter." Too true.

Otherpeoplesteens · 14/04/2022 14:52

Lidl have put the price of vegetable oil up from £1.09 to £1.15 according to the shelf sticker, but by the time I got to the till it had gone up again to £1.20.

It's like Zimbabwe here (Wigan/Bolton/Salford border).

That is a well known meme, its supposed to be a joke....

@peppapigforlife:
Iceland. Delivery is free over £35. I buy for 2 households and find Iceland is still the best value.

You can always get a delivery slot, unlike the bigger international supermarket chains.

Iceland's own cheese - mature cheddar - is on par with Tesco luxury mature cheddar cheese and half the price . Iceland Red Leicester is great. They sell various mixed frozen veg ready to throw into soups, stews, pasta and chill etc- £1 a bag - absolute bargain.

AnxiousSquirrel · 14/04/2022 16:23

My daughter's formula is now £10.50 a tub, up from £8.75 previously

Ohwellnevermindthen · 14/04/2022 16:28

@KeyWorker

Aldi’s 1litre basic type long life orange juice has gone from 55p a few weeks ago to 75p.
Yes I noticed that. I buy a loaf of bread from Asda midweek (normally go to Aldi) I only like one type they sell and noticed it has gone up by 25p.
Ohwellnevermindthen · 14/04/2022 16:32

@IBelieveInAThingCalledScience

Of course the global geopolitical situation has had an impact on all services, products and distribution.

Yet..... most large corporations are posting record profits and not increasing employee's wages.

All is see is cultural wars and division between people to keep them distracted while they profit. Sick of it

Yes I'm so sick of this and sometime wonder whether sometimes crises are partially manufactured due to some people doing very well out of it.
Horcruxe · 14/04/2022 16:41

@Dasher789

Pringles at £3 a tube - I might never have a Pringles again Sad
£1.65 in asda today- Pringles.

They're usually £2 but £1-£1.25 if on offer. I only buy if on offer but had to pay 1.65.

DecemberGal · 14/04/2022 16:45

We rarely eat out these days. Not because of cost but find neither of us can eat a full main never mind all the other courses so not worth it for 2 An occasional takeaway we may buy basic meal but any sundries use supermarket stuff.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 14/04/2022 16:49

I have to say though I went to home bargains for some random stuff today. Shampoo, pair of kiddies croc type shoes, stain remover, dishcloths and washing powder and it’s still really cheap. I think bargain stores are still a good shout. I’ll never buy stuff like Washing powder/vanish etc from supermarket really

XingMing · 14/04/2022 16:53

In commercial terms, the same is true: a container shipment from US to UK which cost £2k two years ago now costs £15-17k. The LME metals index has gone bonkers: nickel went from £20k per tonne to over £100k in six weeks earlier this year, and has dropped again back to £45k. Inflation is headed toards 20%.

Ohwellnevermindthen · 14/04/2022 16:54

@ShortShinyBobbafett

Aldi Scottish Salmon fillets - previously £2.99 now £3.99 in the space of three weeks.
I usually buy the side of Salmon for meals and cut it up and it's gone up by 60p, so roughly 10%.

I would have thought that food would have inflated the least compared to housing and fuel (yes I know it is all linked though) and it looks like most food items are going up by 10%, so I'm utterly baffled why inflation is supposed to be around 6/7% right now. What are they putting in their inflation 'shopping basket' to calculate this right now? Probably jars of pickled sea food and chilli flavoured sex lube. They are blatantly lying aren't they?

Ohhelpmetoo · 14/04/2022 17:04

My family were poor when I was a child . I was on a low income when my children were young . But never as poor as I am retirement. The one thing I have is time .Time to meal plan and cook from scratch, although even that isn’t easy as energy costs are so high.

I hadn’t bought fish and chips for months until the other day . A friend with a car moved some furniture and I offered to buy fish and chips for lunch as a thank you. I nearly fainted . They cost as much as my ( admittedly frugal) weekly shop and then some .

At my age I can cope with no new clothes or evenings out . Don’t have any luxuries. For years I had planned to have a cat or dog when I retire but have decided not too . After reading comments on here I realise it would be unaffordable.

That really made me chuckle. Thanks for the laugh PP.

P.s. I'm hoping you've said this to be funny and it isn't what you believe!! 😂

Horcruxe · 14/04/2022 17:09

@Zilla1

Wonder if the UK will have a short period of deflation in a year when the increases in fuel and energy fall out, petrol/diesel dips and supply chains reconfigure?? Hope it doesn't coincide with the benchmark month for benefits or pensions changes.
Do we think the fuel prices will improve in the next few months, or this is it?

Or is it going to get a lot worse?

I cant believe the government havent put much more in place to shield people from these rises.

Camomila · 14/04/2022 17:12

so I'm utterly baffled why inflation is supposed to be around 6/7% right now.

Retail price index is at 9% now I think, consumer price index is slightly lower.

My contribution is branded rice krispies are £3.50 - for puffed rice! (I obviously buy the supermarket own brand ones)

The only problem is, I usually end up coming out with stuff I hadn't expected to buy.

I just want a toothbrush, but I'll come out spending over £20 on things I hadnt even thought about.

hollyivysaurus · 14/04/2022 17:14

Obviously the big stuff like petrol (£55 or so to fill up, used to be £45) and energy (increase from £130 to £230).

Yesterday I went to the hairdresser and her prices have gone up by £1.50, so that was an extra £3 for DD and I.

Funnily enough just before reading this thread I was doing my online shop with Asda and out of curiosity I’d gone back to an old email receipt from 2020 to compare and everything I’ve checked so far has gone up, most by 15p or so, the washing tablets are about 70p more. It all adds up!

skybluee · 14/04/2022 17:20

Loo roll has gone up a lot.
I was wondering whether it would be a lot cheaper to get a bum gum but my issue is I only do one load of laundry a week, so that would be a problem w/ regard to a towel system as ideally you'd want to wash that every other day.

Lex345 · 14/04/2022 17:21

Went in to Asda and Aldi today to take advantage of the 20p veg. Got carrots, spuds onions and broccolli. Whilst in Asda I got their large smart price cheese too-which has stayed at £3.65 (Aldis is 3.99). Noticed Aldi was absolutely packed. No salad tomatoes in either shop. We are growing some though.

I cant seem to buy cheap noodles any more (they were 14p a pack I think) and havent been able to for a while.

skybluee · 14/04/2022 17:22

I used to get 48 loo rolls for £15 but it's now £20.

Sadly, I think they believe it. In work a few people have said the same. I am baffled. Same with the gas and electricity- some have fixed and think their DD of £130.00 is the fixed cost to them. It was painful to explain the unit rate was the fixed cost not usage. It truly made me stand back and question my own thoughts.

Postage for something that is A4 sized (a fairly typical magazine).

Bought several sheets of stamps at the start of April for a £1.52 sending price. After 4th April that has become £1.65.

Depending where you're located, Cats Protection do free neutering and health checks. PDSA also offer help with vet care, again dependent on location.

Please reconsider getting a cat or dog - they really do make the best friends.

We are on oil for heating.
March 2020 = £174 for 1000 litres.
March 2022 = £890 for 1000 litres.
