Inspired by another thread but mainly by my own experiences today.
In February it was 20p to use the public loos at our favourite seaside town. Today it has doubled to 40p! There are now contactless points incase you don't have any cash. 40p to pee!
Mr Kipling cherry Bakewells have jumped to £1.90 in Asda and I'm sure they used to be £1.40 or sometimes even £1 and that was only a few weeks back. Cake isn't essential I know, but peeing is. Things have gone up generally but the odd pence here and there isn't always noticed but these are huge jumps.

The problem is that we are used to extremely cheap food, it hasn’t really gone up in 20 years or more.
In the late 1980’s we were spending £40-£50 a week on shopping, we can still do this now.

TabithaHazel · 14/04/2022 18:12

@Lipsandlashes

We're taking DC to the Natural History Museum tomorrow. Obviously museums were always free but DH paid £5 for both of us. I don't mind this at all, as obviously they need to recoup some costs and their donations have probably significantly reduced. However, it might mean that a family can no longer afford to go on what was once a free (and brilliant) day out.
I work in the museum sector and I haven't heard that there are any plans to rescind free entry for any of the national museums - where did you hear this, it would be very worrying if this happened?!

@Ormally

Postage for something that is A4 sized (a fairly typical magazine).

Bought several sheets of stamps at the start of April for a £1.52 sending price. After 4th April that has become £1.65.

Yes, I bought 8 2nd class £5.44 and 6 1st class £5.70 yesterday. So expensive to post cards now.
Crikeyalmighty · 14/04/2022 18:35

Hate to mention the B word for those who thought it was an amazing idea- but there is no denying it is in the mix—the kind of deal they did is effectively a no deal at all. it’s no coincidence that until around July last year many of the processes were still not fully in place and hence costs were kept down— now customs issues are here in full and particularly with certain fruit and veg and continental cheese and spices and coffee etc- these increased costs are having an issue as are increased wages to HGV drivers due to shortages of drivers as many have now based themselves elsewhere— we have loads of them here in Denmark and Sweden that were formerly in UK

Energy has gone from 115 to 308 a month. Everything else I can deal with but finding it really difficult to get my head around this one.

RagzRebooted · 14/04/2022 18:42

@Lex345

Went in to Asda and Aldi today to take advantage of the 20p veg. Got carrots, spuds onions and broccolli. Whilst in Asda I got their large smart price cheese too-which has stayed at £3.65 (Aldis is 3.99). Noticed Aldi was absolutely packed. No salad tomatoes in either shop. We are growing some though.

I cant seem to buy cheap noodles any more (they were 14p a pack I think) and havent been able to for a while.

I noticed same re noodles. Haven't managed to get any for less than about 30p in forever. They're a good weekend lunch for the teens to make themselves. Even normal egg noodles have gone up a lot though, so must be ingredients related.
Ireolu · 14/04/2022 18:42

Netflix going up from May by a couple of quid. May be the end of the road for Netflix.

Lex345 · 14/04/2022 18:57

I know, every month I would spend £1 on them just to have in-not overly keen on the salt content in the sachets, but as an occasional thing not so bad. I am kicking myself for not buying Maggi noodles in Iceland the other week.

Inanun2 · 14/04/2022 19:08

@ShortShinyBobbafett

Aldi Scottish Salmon fillets - previously £2.99 now £3.99 in the space of three weeks.
I was wondering how the co-op would compare when I went tonight. They are still 2 packs of fillets for £7.00 / 3 packs for £10.00.
ShortShinyBobbafett · 14/04/2022 19:17

Really Ina, it’s so nice and so fresh that I sort of don’t mind tbh, has a sticker/number to show where it’s fished from - Orkney last week. The nicest thing I eat all week.

Mimilamore · 14/04/2022 19:19

£6.00 per person to go out on our local marshes.....

whoturnedthesunoff · 14/04/2022 19:25

My favourite Linda McCartney Rosemary and red onion sausages free on slimming world I buy them when £1
Last 2 weeks I've looked for them - no reduction £2.25

DinkBoo · 14/04/2022 21:28

Our most noticeable increases are trays of cat food tins (only ones the buggers will eat) have gone up from £6.49 to £10.49 each in the course of 3 years. Dry food has also shot up.

Our food only Aldi shop for two people has gone from about £30-40 a week at most, with quite a few treats in and buying Specially Selected ranges, to £55-60 a week with far fewer treats.

I noticeably haven't been able to get the really big pack of Amazon green toilet rolls delivered in a long time.

DecemberGal · 14/04/2022 21:50

DH (age 70)had some dental work recently and decided that VFM scenario was best at his age and being a smoker.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/04/2022 22:02

@PoshWatchShitShoes

The rising petrol costs doesn't really affect me as I only ever put in £20

That really made me chuckle. Thanks for the laugh PP.

P.s. I'm hoping you've said this to be funny and it isn't what you believe!! 😂

Ditto

Assume you are spending £20 more often now

gogohm · 14/04/2022 22:10

I haven't noticed that much difference but I shop in lidl and very what I buy a lot

CervixSampler · 14/04/2022 22:41

These increases are scary. I'm glad I don't drive and with the price of fuel I don't think I ever will. I'm scared about fuel bills next winter. Dc and I are very limited on what we eat due to sensory issues and it's going to be very tricky to feed us all. I'm working but as a single parent with long term health problems I rely on benefits to top up my wages. This is so worrying.

I picked up a couple of bits in Tesco yesterday (Easter eggs, as most weren't available online) whilst also having a Tesco grocery delivery booked for today.
I noticed that several items were cheaper in store than they were online. And I can't get things like tomatoes online, whereas they have them in store.
It seems a bit unfair when you're already paying delivery costs.

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/04/2022 00:27

@Camomila

so I'm utterly baffled why inflation is supposed to be around 6/7% right now.

Retail price index is at 9% now I think, consumer price index is slightly lower.

My contribution is branded rice krispies are £3.50 - for puffed rice! (I obviously buy the supermarket own brand ones)

I would only ever pay £2 for 510g of rice krispies or £3 for 700g, as Camomila has stated its now £3.50 for 700g as an "offer" however I use Sainsburys about once a week and have an offer that if I use smart shop on my phone, I can have 700g for £2.52 so always worth checking what deals are out there.

Loo roll, I got 32 rolls for £10 in Iceland the other week, Velvet Classic. I try and buy loo roll at no more than 33p a roll, they were 31.5p (the velvet quilted was an even better deal but I find it blocks the loo!)

Blendedfamily7 · 15/04/2022 00:28

If you look at the jumps in the minimum wage, couple that with the huge rise in fuel costs....that is what is pushing up the cost of living. They really need to stop pushing up the NMW it just means those at the bottom end up worse off in the end and keeps prices perpetually increasing. My weekly shop has gone from £70-80 a week to just over £100 (for 6 of us plus a dog)

portionplate · 15/04/2022 05:01

I assume you don't earn the minimum wage?

portionplate · 15/04/2022 05:03

and no the increase has not caused the inflation/cost of living crisis.

Blendedfamily7 · 15/04/2022 09:08

@portionplate

You assume wrong.....of course its a major factor.....companies have to increase prices when their costs increase.....they're not going to sacrifice their profit margins when they don't have to....simples 🤷‍♀️
Fizbosshoes · 15/04/2022 09:24

I don't think NMW increasing by a few % is what's driving up prices. Fuel prices are going up 40-50% (or more)
