The book or books that bring back comforting and happy memories.

Mine are Magic Faraway Tree, Mallory Towers and St Clares, all by Enid Blyton.

What are yours?

When a bit older the book that i can remember clearest was brave new world which i was forced to read at about 10! Scarred for life!!

Favourite was a series about mustang horses. No idea of the name though.

samsmum2 · 14/04/2022 22:01

Another one for Mallory Towers & St Claires here, plus Famous Five. Books I've loved reading to my own children - Pumpkin Soup, Alfie & Annie Rose series, Tiger who came to tea & Michael Morpurgo novels.

As a teen - raymond chandler

Malory Towers and the Cherry Tree Farm books from Enid Blyton. What Katy Did books, A Little Princess and similar. Loved pretending I was the heroine! Also read and loved Far From The Madding Crowd, Lorna Doone and The Hobbit when very young. Plus Roald Dahl books. My nickname was Matilda as I always had a book in my pocket!
As a mum, agree Paper Dolls makes me tear up every time!

inappropriateraspberry · 14/04/2022 22:10

Ooh, and Father Brown stories and I had a collection of ghost stories that I lived, but scared me witless! I think many of my books came from the Puffin Book Club or the book fair via school. We'd get a booklet every so often and I'd choose a book or two.
My daughter now has many of my collection in her shelves!

crazeekat · 14/04/2022 22:10

Loved every single one of Enid blytons but my favs were the famous five.
I now buy DD really old copies, used to have a few good first editions but sold them when I was a nursing student, she likes them but not as much as I did, obv I didn't have phones and YouTube 35!years ago.
Totally understand the racial issues with her with the gollys etc, in this day, but still won't forget the excitement of those stories, would keep me up all night reading one more chapter!

Jellykat · 14/04/2022 22:21

Where the wild things are, still absolutely love it, as do my 2 adult DC.

The Butterfly ball and Grasshopper feast, mainly for the fantastic illustrations that i spent hours studying.

Oh, one of my teachers read 'Worzel Gummidge' to us. I have never forgotten the pesky spadgers and Emily Goodenough and the ten-acre field. Isn't literature RICH!

nonevernotever · 15/04/2022 21:16

@Snoopsnoggysnog yes to both. I really like the Pennington/Ruth/Jonathan/Peter ones and some of the stand alones like A pattern of roses but wasn't so keen on dear Fred.

Welshwabbit · 15/04/2022 21:42

Oh, you're bringing back some great memories. Yes, I loved Edith Unnerstad too! And at a later age, K.M. Peyton: those you mention and the Pennington books. Also love the Jenny Overton books, though I didn't read them till I was an adult.
JudgementalRaccoon · 15/04/2022 21:51

Many, many childhood favourites which I still reread as an adult, but one stand-out is The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper.
