Oh yes- I loved and still love E. Nesbit. Also 'The Story of the Amulet'; 'The House of Arden'; 'The Railway Children'.
angieloumc · 15/04/2022 22:22

All Enid Blyton books, Flambards, Charlotte Sometimes, Come Back Lucy (the tv programme was really scary), When Marnie was there, Mandy (by Julie Andrews).
I wonder if anyone remembers a book called Leo Possessed? It was a children's book in the late 70's, by it was terrifying.

WildRosie · 15/04/2022 22:37

I quite liked some of the Richard Scarry books. We had a copy of 'Cars and Trucks and Things That Go' in my first primary school class. It was very popular and I hardly ever got a chance to look at it. I recently acquired a copy of 'The Jolly Dogs of Dogsville' which I first had when I was about five years old. I don't know if The Jolly Dogs ever caught on but I liked the stories and the illustrations.

@painauraisin

Same as yours. Also Chicken Licken when I was very small, Milly Molly Mandy and White Boots by Noel Streatfeild when I was a bit older.
I was thinking about white boots a few weeks ago. And how grim it was that the auntie had the ice skates the parents drowned in framed on the little girls bedroom wall
SallyCinnamon3009 · 15/04/2022 22:55

@Welshwabbit

Lots already mentioned (particularly the Dark is Rising series, Little House In The Big Woods, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Ballet Shoes, The Little Princess) but also...

The Snow Spider Trilogy by Jenny Nimmo
Where It Stops Nobody Knows by Amy Ehrlich
Little Plum by Rumer Godden

and when I was very little, the Tim and the Hidden People series of school reading books by Sheila K. McCullagh.

Finally someone mentioning the snow spider trilogy. I was obsessed with this as a kid and still re read every few years. Visited Harlech as an adult and all I could thing about was the chapter when nia goes with her elder cousin

I also loved
The little house on the prairie books
Babysitters club
Point horror
Judy Blume - especially tiger eyes and just as long as we're together, was always disappointed there was never a third book in that series from Alison's point of view. Another one I loved was staring sally j freedman as herself
Someone up the thread mentioned the Anastasia krupnik books. I remember reading one by the same author called a summer to die about a girl who's older sister is diagnosed with lukeamia - absolutely heartbreaking

WeasilyPleased · 15/04/2022 23:26

The Little Prince.

Fulmine · 15/04/2022 23:27

Ballet Shoes. My mum gave it to me to read when I was around 7 and a bit poorly, and I absolutely loved it. I've read it several times since.

Come to think of it, I'm just about due a re-read ...

Fulmine · 15/04/2022 23:28

@DanielRicciardosSmile

What Katy Did, and the sequels What Katy Did at School, and What Katy Did Next. I was obsessed with them.

Also, The Naughtiest Girl books, The Box of Delights, and The Dark is Rising series.

You need to track down the further sequels, Clover and In the High Valley.

St Clares and Secret Seven, Sweet Valley Twins and anything by Judy Blume but favourites were Just As Long As We're Together and Here's to You Rachel Robinson. My first ever Judy Blume book was Deanie, liked that too. Also loved Sweet Valley Twins, favourite one was The Unicorns Go Hawaiin or the one where cousin Robyn visits from San Diego. Funny what sticks in your head.
