The book or books that bring back comforting and happy memories.

Mine are Magic Faraway Tree, Mallory Towers and St Clares, all by Enid Blyton.

What are yours?

Does anyone remember a story from one of those Enid Blyton collection books called When Ellen Cleaned the Dolls House? I wish I'd kept my childhood books, I let them all go (under duress and due to literally having nowhere to store them) and I've regretted it ever since Sad I must have had close on everything EB ever wrote and often remember random stories from those collection books that no one else (except my DM) ever recalls.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 14/04/2022 12:05

@NowNowDermot I remember that story, was it something about the dolls coming to life?

I also had so many of those story books and loved them. My mum still has a box in her attic but certainly not all the ones I had growing up.
At my house I have a shelf full of famous five and find outers.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 14/04/2022 12:09

@autienotnaughty yes terrifying!
Was that the one about the girl who found out she had a twin and the twin could do astral projectio

I also read I know what you did last summer, summer of fear, locked in time, killing mr Griffin.

Abhannmor · 14/04/2022 12:55

Tom's Midnight Garden by Phillipa Pearse. Loved reading it to the kids too. Very magical and moving.

Giggorata · 14/04/2022 12:59

Susan Cooper's the Dark is Rising series, by far.

Also liked Narnia, the Hobbit and William.

That's right, the dolls actually move out because the house is so dirty but then Ellen cleans it and the other toys invite a fairy from the garden to live in it instead Smile My DM still has a few of my childhood books thankfully, she was a teacher so used them in her classroom til she retired. I bought DD copies of all the main series but they're not the same, I can still smell my old copies if I think about them Sad

As a preteen I loved anything by Enid Blyton but my absolute favourite book was ‘SuperFudge’ by Judy Blume. I read it, and the other two books in the series, again and again.
Also loved ‘The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler’ and other books by Gene Kemp, and the Chalet School books - I have the whole series and reread them every couple of years.

@LadyMacduff

Nancy Drew mysteries

Enid Blyton boarding school books

Goosebumps

I used to like those books where you had to make a decision and then turn to a certain page to find out the outcome. There were some with puzzles to solve before you could read on as well. I used to get them from the library but I can't remember anything else about them.

The Peter Jackson books - Warlock of Firetop Mountain etc? Brilliant, also my favourite
