To think if you vote Tory now…

You’re effectively propping up this absolute shit show of a government and have no empathy.

I’ll be honest, I’ve voted conservative before as a middle class family their (taxation) policies have suited me more than Labour. I honestly feel ashamed of this and I wish I could’ve seen that the conservatives agenda of ‘levelling up’ is BS.

Regardless of your personal situation, enough is enough now right? People are reliant on food banks, they’re choosing between heating and eating. Austerity has been a total nightmare for society causing the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.

Florenz I absolutely agree.

Many Labour voters voted Tory under Thatcher why they liked her idea of social mobility (she was proof)

I find many of the left to be patronising fitting all working class, brown or black people into a box. I’ve even read on here the anyone who works for NHS wouldn’t possibly vote Tory which is nonsense.

Labour need to move away from we are the party that champion those we feel worthy to we are the party that do listen

HRTQueen · 18/04/2022 18:54

I really don’t think they will change that much those that are angry remain angry not many were shocked

He has pulled two good political moves these past few weeks his statement on women and going to Ukraine. Being banned from Russia was a nice bonus

Narcoanonymoose · 18/04/2022 18:55

@HRTQueen our town is in the red wall. Some pockets of horrendous deprivation, areas that saw no improvement during the 17 years of tory government. Funnily enough during the blair there was investment, particularly in some of the abysmal schools which have seen a huge improvement. The town centre is now like something out of 1980s USSR. Services whittled down to subsistence levels because of austerity with another £40 million to be cut this year. And yes something has shifted. We now have 2 out of 3 tory mps, no levelling up and no brexit bonus with regards to job opportunities. Excuse me if I am a bit incredulous wondering why brexit was nothing like a shift but more of the same.

Narcoanonymoose · 18/04/2022 18:57

@HRTQueen good moves for whom ? The tory party or the country ?

Cornettoninja · 18/04/2022 19:06

@Parker231

Apparently Boris is going to correct Partygate at PMQ’s tomorrow. Will be interesting to see what the polls show afterwards. I can’t work out whether he is just not very bright and couldn’t understand the lockdown laws and now can’t understand why people are furious or whether he is just devious and thought he could get away with it

I’m going with devious. The internet doesn’t forget carefully chosen words he spoke in parliament four months ago.

Blossomtoes · 18/04/2022 19:08

What’s the mood there now @Narcoanonymoose?

HRTQueen · 18/04/2022 19:09

Good moves for Boris Johnson of course

He doesn’t so anything for anyone else

HRTQueen · 18/04/2022 19:11

I would go with devious too

He understands just doesn’t feel it applies to him and will try to bumble his way out of it

HRTQueen · 18/04/2022 19:19

@Narcoanonymoose I posted that I never believed that there should have been a referendum I felt so angry about this I didn’t want to vote.

I know Labour invested in many areas but many felt left behind especially with London and other cities booming. For many it was unforgivable they bailed out the banks and nothing changed. It just steadily got worse but this started before austerity for many. Labour started losing trust Corbyn was marmite and along came the politically savvy partnership of Cummings and Johnson

I’m a huge supporter of New Labour and wish Labour had that political savvy that Blair and Brown had

Parker231 · 18/04/2022 19:20

The press are reporting that Boris will receive a further three Partygate fines this week - how he could lie for so long about this is unbelievable.

Narcoanonymoose · 18/04/2022 19:28

@Blossomtoes so reading the comments in our local paper people seem far more exasperated and let down. Far far more critical comments about the lack of integrity and dishonesty but worryingly a lot of the 'they are all the same' stuff too. I know quite a few leave voting but apolitical types (Eu referendum really invigorated them) and they are thoroughly disenchanted and probably won't vote.
What I do know is that on some of the deprived estates there were big pushes by brexit party reps to get people out voting.

SleeplessInEngland · 18/04/2022 19:29

Tory polling down over the weekend. Nice to see a shamelessly cruel policy didn’t garner a reward. Johnson will now be nervous about the locals.

Narcoanonymoose · 18/04/2022 19:36

Me too @HRTQueen. I think Milliband was a bad choice too however well meaning. Like most long term governments labour got complacent. The early years saw some great policies, still around in some form or another but Iraq war destroyed so much support.

Parker231 · 18/04/2022 19:38

Why was Boris allowed to announce asylum seekers would be sent to Rwanda - on the first day of ‘purdah’ for local elections?

HRTQueen · 18/04/2022 19:40

Yes if David had won things could have been so different. Yes Labour did become complacent

User135644 · 18/04/2022 19:47

@Florenz

"The poor vote Labour, the rich vote Tory."

I really don't think this is true anymore. Most of the most wealthy areas of the country - the cities, are where the Labour votes are, most everywhere else votes Tory.

Labour need to broaden their appeal beyond the university educated middle-class metropolitan latte drinking liberals. They need to appeal to working-class people in small towns. There's no point in them piling up more votes in constituencies where they already win. They can afford to piss off a few of the cosmopolitan types if that's what it takes to get ordinary everyday working people to vote Labour.

The cities full of students and young people tend to vote Labour. The inner city areas aren't rich either, there's tons of poverty about.
mrziggycoco · 18/04/2022 19:47

You voted tory to make more money and you're saying it's wrong to vote for them now, when Labour are spouting absolute nonsense? That makes no sense. Back when I was a lefty I would never have voted Tory for personal gain.

I won't vote for them now either but would if I had to choose between them and Labour, but it wouldn't be about personal gain, but about not wanting a government that grooms children in power.

User135644 · 18/04/2022 19:49

@HRTQueen

People hadn’t had a pay rise long before the Tories came in to power in 2010. Have you forgotten about the 2008 crash and how banks and bankers were bailed out and just carried on as before, the mps finances scandal

Labour had lost trust. We should never ever of had a referendum MPs should have been more aware how desperate people were for change.

They voted for that change (and not suggesting that was the only reason) and wanted to stick by it so of course Get Brexit Done won. We were still in the EU in the last election. I can’t even remember what Labour’s policy was

That only bears out what I said though. People vote based on how the economy is working for them. That's why Labour were voted out in 2010 and why the Tories are in trouble now.
Jdiosmio94 · 18/04/2022 19:51

YAWN

The average voter will always vote with their wallet.

YAWN
Someone keeping you up? Hmm
Xenia · 18/04/2022 19:57

That's true - plus the swing of the pendulum - you tend to get people wanting a change.

HRTQueen · 18/04/2022 20:01

Yes there is that but you need a strong opposition. Tories have always been the government considered by many to manage finances better (not sure why they have this reputation)

As others have said Labour need to put out there why voters should vote for them not why they shouldn’t vote Tory.

Labour seem deflated

LightSnowLight · 18/04/2022 20:06

Yawn. Only fools followed the law to the letter, without any common sense. You gotta remember most people are idiots and the government treats them as such. A friend screamed at me down the phone for visiting my 83 year old mother who had seen no one for 6 months. Sure thing I broke the law.

ilovesooty · 18/04/2022 21:15

I did follow the law and I don't like being described as a fool for doing so.

I expect the people who made the laws to follow them.
