My washing line annoying neighbour

Afrodizzyak · 12/04/2022 16:21

We have a new neighbour who has complained to me about my laundry hanging on the line ruining her view. It's just run of the mill laundry, no crutchless knickers or bondage gear, so not offensive. At first I ignored her, but she later told me she had photographed it and would complain to council.
I'm not the only neighbour she has complained to, another about his whistling, which is piercing her ears, having sensitive hearing and she asked another neighbour to keep his windows and doors closed whilst cooking as it made her nauseous.
It's not just humans she intolerant of, if a bird is singing, she will start growling to scare it away.
Before she moved here, we all just dodged along fine.
Is there any law against hanging washing? I'm not tumble drying our family's wash when not necessary.

I hope you whistle while you’re putting the washing out and getting it back in again op?

Nanny0gg · 12/04/2022 17:51

@Scottishskifun

The only place hanging out washing is frowned upon is on a Sunday on some scottish Islands (religious day) and I think that's fading out now although my friend does recount it getting posted through the letterbox (he's in his 50s though!)

Personally if she continues then I would contact the landlord the council should have a record of registered landlords.

My DS once lived in a quite nice flat in a very attractive area. He wasn't allowed to dry washing on his balcony
ZoyaTheDestroyer · 12/04/2022 17:52

@ponkydonkey

Is it me or have older single ladies gone fucking mental? We have one who moans about EVERYTHING I just ignore her now and she doesn't talk to me anymore. But she's absolutely batshit. I've tried being nice, understanding talking to her, but it made her worse. One day I fucking lost it when she told me to have respect for the road 🤣🤣 I told her to have some respect for other people and mind her own business! Never speak to me again
But OP’s neighbour isn’t ‘older’. She’s in her early thirties.
Ponderingwindow · 12/04/2022 17:54

You would know if you have a restricted covenant. You have to sign agreeing to abide by the rules and pay any fines before being allowed to buy the property.

tomatorich112 · 12/04/2022 17:54

I would be leaving it out 24/7. I like the Y front idea but it's obviously petty.

I would have given her a lecture about global warming and the joys of fresh laundry.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2022 17:55

Get together with the others and submit a complaint about her antisocial behaviour to the council.

Dolares · 12/04/2022 17:57

Oh she would hate me as a neighbour, if its not raining i usually have washing on the line! I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face if she moaned to me.

My neighbour tumble dries everything (she has 2 DC like me so must do a few loads a week) never really understood why she doesn't hang them out.

WhatIsThisPlease · 12/04/2022 17:57

Good God!! What a miserable existence she must have!!!!

As my grandma used to say, "more to be pitied than laughed at"

Although I'd be laughing at her. ----

Ericaequites · 12/04/2022 17:59

In Lowell, MA, a well meaning city council banned hanging laundry from tenement decks. Shortly afterwards, the STD rate went up. While pegging, unpegging, and folding laundry, one could look down into the alleys, and harass compensated shaggers on couches dragged into same. The ordinance was quickly changed. Hanging laundry is eco friendly. Ignore the neighbor.

Zipper666 · 12/04/2022 18:00

For your own peace of mind it might be worth talking to some Jobsworth in the Council to see if there IS some by-law or local regulation that might apply.
That faint possibility aside, she's clearly got mental problems and is more to be pitied than disliked.

PinkSyCo · 12/04/2022 18:00

if a bird is singing, she will start growling to scare it away.

I don’t know why this amused me so much but 🤣🤣🤣
Ignore the miserable cow and just be glad you’re not her. Must be exhausting to hate everyone and everything so much.

Skala123 · 12/04/2022 18:01

Is he/she American? Where I lived in NJ the town had a by-law that you were not allowed to hang washing outside or have a front fence "for aesthetic reasons!!"

viques · 12/04/2022 18:01

@Afrodizzyak

We all own our properties, so no restrictions. Even heard her on the phone talking in a loud voice "more bloody washing flapping in my face". (30 feet away)
Well I would be straight round there asking her to speak quietly on the phone because you feel uneasy eavesdropping on her private phone calls.

And if she is still loud on the phone make sure you stick your fingers in your ears and say very loudly “ LALALALALA I can still HEAR you!”

Ericaequites · 12/04/2022 18:01

Borrow a parrot, and acquire a big outside aviary. Most already swear very well. Swear words are short, sharp, and well enunciated. They are easy to learn.

You could suggest that she looks the other way, but I suspect she might not like that.

If she's not careful, the entire neighbourhood will be reporting her, for harassment.

SoftwareDev · 12/04/2022 18:04

@BananaBender

LOVE the idea of buying hideous colourful charity shop clothes to hang when there is not wet laundry to dry. I'd pay good money to see the look on her face!

SpiderVersed · 12/04/2022 18:09

She's demented.

Indoorcamping · 12/04/2022 18:09

@bloodywhitecat

You beat me to it!

VorpalSword · 12/04/2022 18:13

@Afrodizzyak

Thanks all for advice. I have never experienced anything like this before and just completely bemused by her way of thinking. She's renting the house next door as owner moved away which is a shame.
Can you contact her landlord? If you explain that her raising a neighbour complaint has to be declared when they sell might make them interested.
Musicalsfan · 12/04/2022 18:15

I watched a documentary about Les Dawson a while ago. When he first became successful and moved to an affluent area the neighbours complained about his wife hanging the washing out. She then washed almost everything they had and filled the garden with washing. I think you should emulate her.

Longingforatikihut · 12/04/2022 18:15

Oh OP. I used to have one of these.

Her dog could shit in my yard but I couldn't hang my laundry in MY yard. I could only vacuum for a certain 2 hour period on a Wednesday. I was a nazi (Rammstein had come on the rock metal radio station I listen too). She set RSPCA on me, not issues. It was 20 months of ignore and move on. Thankfully I moved and now have lovely neighbors.

LakieLady · 12/04/2022 18:16

@YouHaveYourFathersBreasts

Assuming you’re not spelling ‘fuck off neighbour’ with your pants or something, then it’s perfectly acceptable to hang out your laundry on your washing line.

She won’t be taken seriously at all. By anyone.

And if you're not spelling "Fuck off, neighbour" with your pants OP, please applique letters on them so that you can!
JudgeJ · 12/04/2022 18:16

@DisforDarkChocolate

How on earth are you resisting spelling rude words with your washing now?
I'd be in the queue for the Ann Summers sale to add spice to the view. I've said before about a friend's neighbour complained to friend's mother about indecent underwear, being on the washing line, black and red, horror horror. Neighbours can be totally stupid, another friend had a neighbour who wanted him the check with her before he cut the grass, in case her baby was asleep. This was in the middle of the day.
Blimeyherewegoagain · 12/04/2022 18:18

Washable sanitary towels dry well on the line…

RusticChips · 12/04/2022 18:19

She's lucky your not hanging it out in the front garden. One of my neighbour has a detached house with large garden and has suddenly put it her washing line in the front garden, talk about airing your dirty linen in public - pants, knickers, bras, assorts - most bizarre !
