My washing line annoying neighbour

Afrodizzyak · 12/04/2022 16:21

We have a new neighbour who has complained to me about my laundry hanging on the line ruining her view. It's just run of the mill laundry, no crutchless knickers or bondage gear, so not offensive. At first I ignored her, but she later told me she had photographed it and would complain to council.
I'm not the only neighbour she has complained to, another about his whistling, which is piercing her ears, having sensitive hearing and she asked another neighbour to keep his windows and doors closed whilst cooking as it made her nauseous.
It's not just humans she intolerant of, if a bird is singing, she will start growling to scare it away.
Before she moved here, we all just dodged along fine.
Is there any law against hanging washing? I'm not tumble drying our family's wash when not necessary.

I'd coordinate with your neighbours the other side of her to get really fetching granny pants and hang them for days either side, especially if she has friends around, a couple of seen better days large bras too if you can acquire them. She needs to be shown how ridiculous she is

TrashyPanda · 12/04/2022 17:23

She is demented.

Hanging your washing out is the eco friendly way to go and it costs nothing.

In Scotland, the shared back garden of tenement properties is known as a drying green. Cos that’s where you dry your clothes!

Just tell her not to be so silly. And walk away. Not engaging in her bat shit behaviour is the way to go.

GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 12/04/2022 17:23

Sorry OP, but she's so batshit it made me laugh!
Just laugh in her face, you've done nothing wrong

TheDogsMother · 12/04/2022 17:26

She sounds absolutely barking mad. Any chance you could get hold of bondage gear and other interesting things to hang on your line ?

katseyes7 · 12/04/2022 17:27

She's nuts. Clearly.

HowIsItMarchAlready · 12/04/2022 17:28

Please, please, please OP, record her growling at birds and share it here!

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 12/04/2022 17:29

Your neighbour sounds utterly hatstand.

Keep washing & hanging your smalls with pride!

Note - my pants are big enough to obscure the view of Everest, but I’d still be flying the knicker flag with aplomb!

GeorgiePorge · 12/04/2022 17:31

there is no legal right to a view.

perhaps you should consider should consider spelling out 'f*ck off' with your laundry after all. she is definitely being batshit crazy

LittleDiaries · 12/04/2022 17:32

@bloodywhitecat

You need to do this on the next sunny day
Grin That's good. We used to have a batshit neighbour who complained about many things, including cooking smells. I took to opening the kitchen windows, so he got a really good strong smell of whatever I was cooking. Served him right for complaining.

I used to work for a Council years ago and all the batshit calls used to get put through to my desk. There were, unsurpisingly, quite a lot of oddball characters with a whole host of weird complaints.

Afrodizzyak · 12/04/2022 17:34

Thanks all for advice. I have never experienced anything like this before and just completely bemused by her way of thinking.
She's renting the house next door as owner moved away which is a shame.

She's batshit. Ignore her and let her get on with making her pointless complaints. They will be outwardly ignored, but also met with laughter and derision.

DFOD · 12/04/2022 17:35

A friend of mine described a similar neighbour conflict in her town where one household strung up 10 pairs of huge old Y fronts with very prominent (fake) ginger skid marks raised high to wind up the neighbour - left out 24/7/365 -

DecemberGal · 12/04/2022 17:38

My washing line can be very hit & miss as it constantly rains.(dryer used frequently). My DS works at a manufacturing industry that makes curry sauces so always doing curries/stir fries. Neighbours are Asian too and also many BBQs when we do get Sun ☀️Also many cars in families. How would she cope?

BlueOverYellow · 12/04/2022 17:40

Yes! Spell out offensive words with your laundry! Grin

And ignore her. She's clearly batshit.

I'd make sure I had stuff out there every day just to annoy her

hangrylady · 12/04/2022 17:40

"Please don't knock on my door again or I shall report you for harassment". Just tell her that then refuse to engage with the weirdo.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/04/2022 17:41

If you find the suggestion of using your washing to swear at your neighbour offensive you may want to consider this. On 21st October, which is obviously, Trafalgar Day use your washing to display the legendary 'England expect that every man will do his duty'.
October is quite away off but to be honest it will require quite a bit of sewing, and possibly dyeing, to produce the effect. But I do think should your neighbour photograph it and take it to the Council it could end up In National newspaper!

Longcovid21 · 12/04/2022 17:42

She's bonkers. I love a line full of washing. Mine or someone else's. Is she faux posh like hiacinth bouquet / bucket?

BritInUS1 · 12/04/2022 17:43

Oh I would definitely be hanging up some crotchless knickers and bondage gear just to wind her up

Scottishskifun · 12/04/2022 17:44

The only place hanging out washing is frowned upon is on a Sunday on some scottish Islands (religious day) and I think that's fading out now although my friend does recount it getting posted through the letterbox (he's in his 50s though!)

Personally if she continues then I would contact the landlord the council should have a record of registered landlords.

Livpool · 12/04/2022 17:46

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

I think you need to suggest she moves here - it is probably remote and quiet enough for her!
Wildlife and the stats being more visible would piss her off
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 12/04/2022 17:47

Can you get in touch with either the letting agent or the owner?
Let them know they've let the house to someone who complains constantly and growls at birds🤯

LoveSpringDaffs · 12/04/2022 17:48

@Afrodizzyak

Well the good news is, she's renting! More chance of her moving!!

I'm surprised she's early 30's & has a partner! I bet she's a real joy to live with!

Being so young I'd probably tell her to mind her own fucking business & stop perking into my garden!

But yes, telling her 'please do report it to the council' is probably the most sensible route.

Batshit weirdo!!

cigarettesNalcohol · 12/04/2022 17:48

When I got to the part about her growling at the birds, it became clear she is most likely mad...

Start whistling when you're hanging out your washing.

Can you borrow a pet cockatoo from someone? They're noisy, and they can learn to talk. Teach it some rude words or a phrase like "shut up crazy lady", and it could probably learn to imitate a whistling sound.

Time for a trip to a charity shop to buy some of the most brightly coloured and hideous clothes you can find to hang on the washing line when you don't have any actual washing to hang on it.
