Did anyone see this last evening? A lady with 2 small DC and a husband working as a Research Scientist was struggling with bills .Another young Mum in tears as her energy bill was so high.A third lady (working as a Nurse) not able to run a car. How will they manage to keep going? Surely Govt could do more?

The tory government simply do not care. Only solution is to vote them out in 2024

dottydodah · 12/04/2022 11:32

Sorry YANBU if you agree Govt could /should do more .YABU if you think Govt have helped enough (350) cash help part loan /part cash gift

It broke my heart. What’s even more depressing is that it will be far worse for those families next winter. They should make the entire Cabinet watch that.

dottydodah · 12/04/2022 11:45

Blossomtoes I know .it just smacks of them and us situation .We are not wealthy but managing OK with a sensible budget . Thing is one ladies bill was going up by £50 pm! how is this even possible?

It was the shoes that really upset me. That poor woman was so horrified and upset at having to pay £30 to replace her kid’s shoes. Just awful.

dottydodah · 12/04/2022 11:51

I know £30 is to me a usual amount ,maybe a bit more even .Also this lady was a Nurse! So no she cant "get a job" as she already has one

It’s like going back in time. The nurse in particular really struck a chord. A nurse should be able to buy her kids shoes FGS!

This.

I'm past caring if labour are up to it. Personally I think Angela Rayner should take over but I'd happily listen to Kier than any more Tory BS.

dottydodah · 12/04/2022 11:56

Roses1221 Yes exactly .My DF and FIL were both hungry as a young boys in the 30s/40s .Awful to think happening again in the 21st c FFS!

She only worked very part time though didn't she and kids were school aged. So maybe potential to work more hours. She would get help with childcare in the holidays.
Orangesandlemons77 · 12/04/2022 12:00

I watched this, thought it was sad. I hope that something changes.

Blossomtoes · 12/04/2022 12:01

Thing is that my dad was born in a mining community in 1916. He and his many cousins didn’t go hungry. It’s unbelievable that it’s worse now than it was then.

I think one of the key things that the government could and should do is to do more to ensure that absent parents pay child maintenance. CMS has to be held accountable for their failings and get these people paying for their kids. You read so many times how the ( usually dads) pay nothing, working cash in hand, move abroad, find a loophole, then go and start another family. Obviously this won't help struggling couples. If two working parents are still struggling then that really is shocking.
Snaketime · 12/04/2022 12:08

Both me and my DH work and we can't afford to buy our kids new shoes at the moment. We have to do a monthly food shop the second I get paid to make sure there is actually enough money there to buy food and try to save enough of his money to just top up on fruit and veg as needed. My DH is a chef and I work retail, trying to keep the heating on, a roff over our heads, my car running to get me to work, school lunches and childcare money does not go very far.

SmallThingsEverywhere · 12/04/2022 12:11

@Babyroobs I think she was working PT because childcare was expensive. It is prohibitively expensive for many mothers, which either prevents them going back to work fullstop or limits them to PT.

RedWingBoots · 12/04/2022 12:12

@Babyroobs she said she couldn't afford childcare.

Even working 7-8 hours that are office hours doesn't cover school hours.

My electric bill alone went up by £60, it literally doubled in price.

It was when the teens saying they weren't hungry that upset me.

Seems to me that whilst the fuel prices have crippled people the biggest issue is the housing costs in this country- 3/4 of your income on a roof over your head was always doomed for failure for the average working person. The tories are scum but near on every government in living memory hasn’t done enough, too many people and no where near enough housing!

RedWingBoots · 12/04/2022 12:16

@Babyroobs you presume the dad isn't paying CMS.

CMS doesn't rise with inflation.

Also two of the families were couples and weren't managing.

Yes I pointed out in my post that if both parents working and still can't manage then that is shocking.

I felt sorry for those who had mortgages on their homes as if something goes wrong they are completely screwed for months.
crosbystillsandmash · 12/04/2022 12:19

@Babyroobs
Totally agree.
My life was incredibly hard after my ex dh literally abandoned me & our 2 very young dc. I was very poor and the memories still haunt me, I dread to think how much harder my life would have been with the cost of living as it is today.
I worked hard but my life only improved, many years later when I met my now dh.
I don't have to worry about money now but still really struggle to spend any because of my previous life.
My ex jumped through every loophole to avoid paying cm and never paid a penny, life would have been so very different if he hadn't been able to do this!!

My friends niece is paying £1800 in surrey for a 3 bedroom semi. It's madness. Most of that is being covered by benefits so public money paying of the landlords mortgage. It really is shocking that these kind of rental prices are allowed to spiral and that so little social housing is being built.
