I know alot of it is probably exajerated by media but to splosh out that much on a completely ott wedding seems quite revolting to me when millions all over the world are dying and how that money could have been spent on helping starving dying children, housing homeless people and helping refugees fleeing from war torture disaster and god knows what. And while I'm having a moan flogging just 1 painting of the royal family could probably solve alot of problems and it makes me sick how they preach to everyone about everything whilst sitting on fortunes t they don't need want and probably don't even like or notice anymore. Anyway that's what I think.

Most weddings in wealthy societies involve the unnecessary spending of money that could be given to better causes. Many of us spend amounts that could be life-changing in the developing world on our holidays and life's luxuries. Yes, this wedding cost more than most, but if you follow your arguement to a logical conclusion all fancy weddings are morally equally wrong. You are being unreasonable. This type of outrage distracts from the far more thorny problem of wealth inequality here in the UK and around the world. We should focus our efforts on making personal decisions about how we spend our money, what supply chains we support and which politicians put in power.

TheKeatingFive · 11/04/2022 18:08

To claim furlough money the business had to be. going concern after CV19- that was requirement. VBs business didnt meet that criteria

Well it obviously did, as it was cleared for payments.

Plenty of businesses don't make profits for years. It's not unusual and it doesn't make them vanity projects. During this time, they still employ people, pay NI and income tax is raised from their salaries.

PeonyRose80 · 11/04/2022 18:09

I believe instead of wedding gifts they asked for donations to Ukraine charity fund… so not all bad.

OMG12 · 11/04/2022 18:10

I’m sure if you look round your house and see what isn’t essential, tv, clothes (keep a couple of outfits) art on the walls, gadgets, tech, etc flog those and donate the funds to charity.

MurmuratingStarling · 11/04/2022 18:11

🙄

JangolinaPitt · 11/04/2022 18:11

When you spend money it does actually provide incomes to people who pay taxes on those incomes…

Fulmine · 11/04/2022 18:12

@MySecretHistory

So what if it’s a vanity project! She’s interested in fashion, she can afford to do it and it employs people and pays taxes. It was perfectly legitimate for them to claim furlough - businesses aren’t supposed to be propped up by their owners’ personal wealth. Two totally separate things.

I think the point was.
It doesnt pay any taxes as it has never made a profit. It is only kept open as they loan it money. It is not a going concern.
To claim furlough money the business had to be. going concern after CV19- that was requirement. VBs business didnt meet that criteria

If the business employs staff and is still going, then it qualified.
ArtVandalay · 11/04/2022 18:12

Meh. I can’t get worked up about it.

Redcrayons · 11/04/2022 18:12

Of course I think it’s a ridiculous amount of money for a wedding, but so long as they’re not asking me to to chip in, so what?

The bride’s family make the Beckhams look like paupers. Nobody is going hungry to pay for it. And there would have been many local people employed during the day, not to mention all the suppliers.

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 11/04/2022 18:13

I'm with you op. That much wealth on display for the sake of showing off to their pals is grotesque. They could have had a spectacular wedding for a million. Why over do it? For people worth so much money - they look really 'cheap'. It's not the bride/groom really. They're going to accept what they're given.

MurmuratingStarling · 11/04/2022 18:13

Colour me shocked. OP posts a goady and controversial thread and then doesn't return. I'm not wasting another SECOND on this thread, but YES @Airfriedpotatowitch YABU!!!

FlorianImogen · 11/04/2022 18:14

The businesses involved who received the money spent on this wedding aren't complaining!

Blossomtoes · 11/04/2022 18:15

The issue wasn’t whether or not the business qualified but the ethics of claiming tax payers’ money to support a business with a history of loss making subsidised by its multi millionaire owners. Clearly they realised that enough people considered it unethical to withdraw the claim.

moonbedazzled · 11/04/2022 18:16

Victoria Beckham did claim furlough. And I'm pretty sure she had the right to under the scheme. But she reversed the decision because it drew a lot criticism and bad publicity. I think quite a few wealthy people found themselves in the same situation. Some reversed their decision and some didn't.

jade9390 · 11/04/2022 18:16

Stop reading celeb stories, if it offends you. Everyone wastes 1000s on stupid weddings. He is a prat but he can do what he wants.

Benjispruce4 · 11/04/2022 18:17

Didn’t even know he’d got married. Stop reading/watching celeb tv.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/04/2022 18:18

I'd rather the money he spends in his kids wedding than they money he donated to Trumps reelection campaign.

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 11/04/2022 18:18

@FrankLeeSpeaking

YABU.
Like it not, it's their money and their choice.
The money isn't just thrown away- loads of ordinary people have been paid money for working. If people didn't splash out on wedding photographers etc, they'd be starving and out of work as well.

I agree.

That wedding has given employment to hundreds of people.

Wheniruletheworld · 11/04/2022 18:19

Which particular painting of the royal family were you thinking of? Or do you mean a paiting from the royal collection? Because pretty much all such paintings are owned by the country, not individual members of the royal family. So yes, the country could collectively decide to sell a few of these, but not sure anyone will really care

TreatTrimTame · 11/04/2022 18:20

@Airfriedpotatowitch i understand your point but can I ask what level is ok to flaunt? I presume you feel your own personal level of wealth and spending is fine compared to someone in a third world country? I presume your children get christmas/birthday gifts and this is fine? yet third world children cant afford food and clean drinking water. is a birthday party at a play centre ok? some cannot afford that. what about a 20k run of the mill (in the uk) wedding?

there are much wealthier than the peltz-beckhams so i am interested in why their level vexes you.

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/04/2022 18:22

One post about how jealous you are and then you bugger off. Are you a journalist?

It’s their money, why should they spend it on ’helping starving dying children, housing homeless people and helping refugees fleeing from war torture disaster and god knows what’

Your anger is directed at the wrong people.

saraclara · 11/04/2022 18:22

I'm pretty certain that this wedding was planned and mostly paid for long before Ukraine was invaded and the recent rises in inflation and energy costs.

I'm not a fan of ostentatious wealth, but to tie it in to what's going on in the world and at home at the moment is just silly.

orangeisthenewpuce · 11/04/2022 18:24

Her parents are Billionaires. Of course they are going to spend lots on the wedding. They will also be employing lots of people for the wedding.

TootsAtOwls · 11/04/2022 18:25

If they hadn't spent the money on a wedding it still be sitting in their bank accounts, would that be better?

At least they're circulating it into the economy

SilverSusie · 11/04/2022 18:26

We should all think about what WE'RE doing to help solve these problems. What percentage of YOUR wealth do you give away to those in need? We could all do without Starbucks' coffees, nice shoes, new sofas, throw-away fashion, fags, wine, cake. LOADS of shit. None of us do though, do we? It's all on a scale. Think about your last few purchases. Which ones could you have done without? In the last couple of days I've bought a "Baby Alive" doll for my daughter, a Harry Potter mug for myself, millionnaire's shortbread, olive tapenade, a posh candle and a fucking xylophone I'll never use. If I hadn't done that, I could have given 70 quid to charity. If we ALL did that, it'd be hundreds of millions. But none of us really want to give our money away. I give 40 a month away, but I could do a lot more if I cut back. But if I cut back, I should be putting it into a saving fund for my kids. Or a private pension because I'm on my own. Just do what YOU can manage.
