Eco protesting

Boomerwang · 11/04/2022 05:59

Apparently there's a bill going forward to give police more powers to deal with protests and vigils that cause 'serious unease' or 'serious annoyance' and this bill has been blocked several times by Keir Starmer previously.

AIBU to think police should be granted more powers to stop protestors from blocking access points? I fully agree the right to protest must be protected, but what about when it affects others?

I'd argue to go even further and stop the waste of taxpayer's money by having to involve the police at all but then I know people would get seriously hurt this way and that's not okay.

At the same time, I wonder how effective these protests are by forcing us to confront what's going on and whether ultimately they are doing something good? Would they achieve results by sitting to the side of access points instead? Would anyone listen if daily life were uninterrupted? Does anyone stop to think of the cause just because they were physically stopped? Surely it's impossible to sympathise when you're angry?

Personally protesting is something I read about in the news but it doesn't prompt me to reflect on my contribution or research further.

Has anyone been affected by protests before and did it make you consider environment and ecology after the event?

So what if one of these eco warriors has an accident on a protest and has to be taken to hospital to be treated by NHS staff..............oh wait NHS staff who wont be there because they cant get the petrol/diesal to get to work!!

mmmmmmghturep · 12/04/2022 15:12

Protestors will let emergency services through

@Momijin People also need fuel so they can drive to out patient appointments. Or should they think. Fuck it i will call an ambulance to make sure i can get to my appointment.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/04/2022 16:56

Which particular element of climate change do you think is wrong?

The reaction to it, as in competitive hyperbole, pointless virtue signalling all over social media, and the more ridiculous activities of ER and the like

And you might try to be a bit more original with the depressingly predictable "So you can't provide a single link", when what I actually said was that I'm not prepared to post links if people aren't interested beyond attempting to score silly points

Daftasabroom · 12/04/2022 17:52

@Puzzledandpissedoff I'm definitely not trying to score points. The burden of proof is on you to support your argument, that's pretty fundamental to debate don't you think?

MangyInseam · 12/04/2022 23:43

It's really not difficult to find examples where climate modelling has been inaccurate, it happens all the time, and it's not even like there is only one model.

Fgs, they don't gridlock a whole city. Usually it is just one tiny place. I have worse every day with roadworks and accidents.
Daftasabroom · 13/04/2022 06:06

@MangyInseam I'm guessing you don't do much system modelling; there is a whole world of difference between inaccurate and wrong. For over thirty years climate predictions have been clear and consistent. Ever increasing accuracy does not make previous studies wrong.

I bet he'd feel different if it was him that needed the ambulance, which he might one day if this carries on.

They should just be moved on whether they are glued to the road or not. The skin will grow back eventually.

worriedatthistime · 13/04/2022 07:52

@Daftasabroom im fully aware that led don't contain mercury , thats why I said low energy ( cfl) , but they aren't being phased out and there are millions of them and they will be around for years and years to come
Most people don't even know and when they smash them they sweep yp as normal or when they burn oit they chuck them in bin
There will be millions of broken ones in landfills all over.
They have put people at risk when they should of been putting money into led technology as it was right around the corner.
Have you read the clean up instructions for a cfl and what to do if it gets on your carpet or clothes

mmmmmmghturep · 13/04/2022 14:20

@Momijin Im talking about the blocking of the oil refineries and well you know it despite your attempt at obfuscation It caused a shortage at the pumps People need fuel to get to work and things like out patient hospital appointments

If you're referring to Roger Hallam, he is no longer a member of XR. XR is about non violent direct action.

Shame that our government didn't want to subsidise electric cars like some scandinavian countries (until economies of scale take over) which would mean that our reliance on fossil fuels would be less.

The fossil fuels that is destroying the planet and causing wars? That is making us reliant on countries that we would rather not be reliant on..

Yep, that one.

We do not need fossil fuels. That's it.

We only use them because our government is made up of wealthy people with their hands in the fossil fuel pie.

Did you see how the whole world had to stop because of covid? More of that is coming.

There will be food scarcity. Because global warming messes up the eco system. Global warming is happening too quickly. It means our eco system can't adapt in time.

Extreme weather events will cause huge disruption. You won't be able to take anyone to any hospital when the roads are flooded or there are big fallen trees blocking the roads. Or a fire blocking your access.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/04/2022 18:34

We do not need fossil fuels. That's it.

We do though and will do for a long time. People will have petrol and diesel cars for years after they stop being sold. I've got a new car, I'm in no position to change to electric even if I wanted to as I'm paying for that. Even if I hand it back after 3 years it'll be too new to be scrapped so it'll be around for a good few years.

Sirzy · 13/04/2022 19:59

Even if I hand it back after 3 years it'll be too new to be scrapped so it'll be around for a good few years.

Exactly and scrapping perfectly good vehicles just because of their fuel type is hardly good for the environment anyway.

My car is 6 years old, I will have it for a good few years yet. If affordable I will certainly look at electric as an option when I do replace it but I’m not replacing it just because!

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 08:49

@Momijin how are you running lorries on electric or planes ? Or ships
So we will need fossil fuels for a long long time

Daftasabroom · 14/04/2022 08:52

@worriedatthistime what counts as a "long time"?

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 09:03

@Daftasabroom at least my lifetime and most likely yours , do you think planes are going to fly on water
We don't even have the technology to fully go electric all cars yet to sort all needs let alone trucks and then planes and they will still be needed as we need food and imports

Sirzy · 14/04/2022 09:06

It would take one hell of a battery to run a lorry, especially without it having to be out of service for hours upon end to charge!

Daftasabroom · 14/04/2022 09:37

@worriedatthistime The vast majority of transportation will be zero emissions within 30 years, i.e. 2050. We absolutely have the technology to go all electric, not the manufacturing capacity for sure, but the technology exists and is developing all the time.

worriedatthistime · 14/04/2022 09:44

@Daftasabroom like I said long way off and not totally green either

Sirzy · 14/04/2022 09:46

So from that to do 300km would need a full battery. Depending on the charger that could take 9.5 hours to charge it, or a minimum of 2.5 hours. A full days driving for a HGV driver can see them do 600km.

Like I said it’s a long way off being anywhere near a realistic option for most companies.

Daftasabroom · 14/04/2022 09:59

@worriedatthistime 2030 really isn't a long way off. There are hydrogen prototype planes flying today, the electric airspeed record is 345 mph.

@Sirzy so despite showing you trucks you can go and buy today you still cling to your prejudices?

Sirzy · 14/04/2022 10:18

No I stand by what I said previously and the link you posted proved my point. At the moment the batteries aren’t strong enough to do a full days driving without having to be charged during the day which takes hours to do.

That’s not prejudice. That’s fact. I hope that the technology keeps developing to make it feesible (and affordable) but that is a long way off.
