To switch off the power at 10pm tomorrow night

Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

@TheRealMrsMac

Daft or not, we took part. It made us feel a bit better at least. Even a teenager was on board, despite the untimely break to normal service of Netflix and gaming.
But you're on here at 22.45! Confused Doesn't count much if you were only off for 45 minutes LOL!
JudgeJ · 10/04/2022 22:45

@WhoWants2Know

This is the post that I saw. It's the surge as everyone switches back on that is supposed to cause the disruption.

I think it's similar to how advert breaks during very exciting TV programs have historically caused power surges.

If it were well publicised, we're all switching off for 10 minutes on a particular date, the generating companies would add the switch back on to their list of events when they expect surges, eg half time in the World Cup final. It's quite fascinating to see how well prepared they are for scheduled disturbances.

@ConfusedByDesign

It might make people feel more empowered in helpless circumstances and encourage real protests going when the time is right...
💯
Cookiecrumble22 · 10/04/2022 22:47

@Shitme

I looked to . Can't believe you posted as 10.03

I only looked out the window, it's a bay so I can see all down the road, at just gone 10

I did the same 😅. No harm in doing it . But I don't think it would have made a difference. Also I think it means that once you turn back on it means the appliances and boiler workers extra hard to get back to the temperature it should have been ? Maybe that does not happen if its only 10 min.

This poster obviously missed that it was meant to be for 10 minutes.

Nor do they appear to know that you can post from a phone without the need to use electricity.

JudgeJ · 10/04/2022 22:53

@Chely

Why on earth would you need the oven to tell you the time? I swith that off at the mains after every use.
I don't, I would have to crawl on my very old knees to empty a cupboard to find the switch! I discovered the hard way that if the clock isn't working then the oven doesn't work either.

So nothing will actually change but maybe down the line pathetic entitled offspring will glue themselves to roads Lorries or Michrophones? Thank God for that; everything is sorted then, maybe we should bring them to their knees by GASP DOING THIS FOR 15 MINUTES NEXT TIME!! They must be shitting themselves all these Fat Cat bosses. VIVE LA REVOLUTIONARIE!!
iheartmybeachhut · 10/04/2022 23:07

Has anyone seen anything about this on main stream media ?

Narwhalelife · 10/04/2022 23:13

@iheartmybeachhut a quick Google and it’s trickling into the news papers online

@Cumbriangal we are all ears for your ideas. Unless of course you support the price rises of literally everything

What the fuck is the point of switching off your electric for 10 minutes? How pathetic. What are people trying to prove?

I don't think cumbriangal is supporting the price rises but is using sarcasm that the powers that be aren't going to worry because some customers switched off for ten minutes. I didn't do it nor did other people in my immediate area when I looked out.

MurmuratingStarling · 10/04/2022 23:17

@Narwhalelife You need to get out more. Go for a few walks/bike rides...

And the bonus of doing that is that you will save some leccie!

Shitme · 10/04/2022 23:18

Can't see anything reported in the DM which usually has this sort of thing but of course it has clashed with the Beckham nuptials for news space

Mumtofourandnomore · 10/04/2022 23:25

Hmmm, I hate to say it but wholesale prices are higher than the price cap at the moment, so you are doing energy suppliers a favour by lowering demand - they’ll be able to sell their surplus volumes back to the market at a profit…….

Energy suppliers typically make less than 2% margin on energy, and with the very complex hedging strategies and risk they have to take on, there is less in it for them than you would think.

The energy crisis is caused by a whole range of global factors - there isn’t much either the government or suppliers can do unfortunately.

ConfusedByDesign · 10/04/2022 23:32

Protests and disobedience are good when governments are being unjust.
We’ve been so obedient over the past couple of years, some of it unnecessary and a lot of people have suffered.
The ripple effect of these price hikes will be very serious. Lots of small businesses will shut as people decide to save money and stop eating out, getting their hair done, employing a cleaner or having their car washed. What will society be like in the next year or so if we continue to accept everything obediently?
The government are burning £8.7 billion PPE yet they can’t help with energy hikes by extremely profitable energy companies.
I doubt if today’s small protest did much in reality but if it causes a shift in thinking then great.

PMSL at people bragging about not using electric for TEN MINUTES but instead they are posting on their mobile phone, which has to be charged with electric, and using the internet that is provided by the phone provider who uses electric to provide the internet You couldn't make it up! Grin

safclass · 10/04/2022 23:50

So are ours but they still have a battery incase of power cuts.

Oh the irony of it all. Just more virtual signalling for fb, twitter et al.
Designerly · 11/04/2022 00:25

Wow, I can't believe some of the comments on this one.

a) Your fridge/freezer contents will not melt in 10 minutes if the door is shut.

b) It is not just a pointless social media prank/ joke retweeted by fools, it has been reported seriously by regional (and London) press in advance.

c) The point is for this action to send a message to government, and of course no one will notice if one single person switches off their appliances for 10 minutes, but if millions do, then if will register as a serious concern.

d) It is a genuinely democratic and non partisan expression which expresses concern, without the need to block streets or march on Whitehall.

So with minimal personal inconvenience you can show concern for the hundreds of thousands of households who are about to suffer fuel poverty this year.

To my mind, that doesn't seem so pointless.

bluebaul · 11/04/2022 00:29

It is not just a pointless social media prank/ joke retweeted by fools, it has been reported seriously by regional (and London) press in advance.

Being reported by local newspapers doesn't a serious issue make. In fact the reason it's being reported will be due to the paper's lifting the story, as so often happens, and we even see it on here.

The point is for this action to send a message to government, and of course no one will notice if one single person switches off their appliances for 10 minutes, but if millions do, then if will register as a serious concern.

It won't register as a serious concern though, that would mean a mass situation with no reason. The only thing that will register is 'oh these idiots have fallen for it' - there is no concern. They know why people have done it.

mmmmmmghturep · 11/04/2022 00:32

And they are going to do it again.

Demanding action but no idea outside that or what this actions does in potentially putting costs up.
