To switch off the power at 10pm tomorrow night

Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

@SpaceFarce

Yes yes guys I said I’d got it wrong and have reported my comment and apologised… I’m suitably ashamed! I maintain that the energy providers are in no way, shape or form going to feel the sting from a handful of social media followers turning off their fuse box for 10 minutes, even if they do want to repeat it every Thursday a la ‘clap for the NHS’.
A la clap for the nhs was promoted by Boris and chums.

I’m not sure a switch off will be. Whatever, it’s a start. Most people will not be able to sustain the increases.

ConfusedByDesign · 10/04/2022 21:04

Even if it does work and costs the electricity company, won’t they just pass the cost back onto us?
This whole thing makes me sick as it doesn’t have to be like this at all.

Shitme · 10/04/2022 21:10

The extra costs are just passed back to the consumer like the SLR costs were

Avacadoandtoast · 10/04/2022 21:14

@WhoWants2Know I just read the article - surely doing this then would add extra costs to us as the consumer, why would we want that??

iheartmybeachhut · 10/04/2022 21:20

I'm looking forward to the outcome of this rubbish idea I really am.
I have full empathy for people who are struggling but it is so wrong to give anyone false how that this is actually going to work.
The companies should be working to get people on pre payment meter paying the same as the rest of us for their electric not charging more because they can.

I think the idea is to reduce their profits? But I don't really have an opinion in either direction. If something helps people feel like they are making themselves heard by switching off then great.

Narwhalelife · 10/04/2022 21:24

Change will not happen without action. This might have started as a ‘load of social media bull shit 🙄’

But what if it did trigger a chain of events that led to the voices of everyone being heard.

We are all at risk of choosing between food or heating. Regardless of where we think we are in the social hierarchy. Illness, divorce, rising interest rates, another pandemic could put anyone at risk.

I know because work with hundreds of people who are at risk and many of those are surprised to end up here.

It never happens to you until it it.

Avacadoandtoast · 10/04/2022 21:28

I guess I just worry it would actually achieve the opposite effect to what the campaign is wanting to do

ConfusedByDesign · 10/04/2022 21:41

Well, I’ll do it. Switch off as many electric stuff as I can for 10mins. Not fridge or cooker though (although cooker won’t be being used).
I doubt it will do anything except maybe illustrate how many people are willing to take part in protest?

NotTheOW · 10/04/2022 21:42

I'm off to bed early as ived turned the heating off and it's freezing so will switch it off anyway

Come on now, what do you actually think is going to happen?

Thinking that these companies will ever help anyone is rubbish.

It’s a start. Nobody has false hope. It’s a start.

Cookiecrumble22 · 10/04/2022 21:52

I doubt it will change anything

But why are so many people worried about their cooker clocks Grin

Narwhalelife · 10/04/2022 21:52

@bluebaul I’m not sure, but it’s better to do something than nothing in my opinion
This article illustrates how sudden, unexpected spikes or drops in electricity actually can have a massive effect on the national grid, costing millions of pounds. Sounds reasonable to me. [[https://brokenbritain.co.uk/can-the-bigpoweroff-protest-make-a-difference]]
This is absolutely crazy, national grid don't generate electricity, they move it around. The 'balancing costs' are payouts they have to make are either to either get more generators on board at short notice (hydro storage or such) or compensate other generators for switching off/down their production after they had already been locked into generating in the forecast.

Increasing the balancing costs results in National grid paying the electricity generators more!

Shitme · 10/04/2022 22:03

I just looked up our road and peoples lights are on as normal, perhaps they never got the memo😂

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 10/04/2022 22:13

It’s only “better to do something” if the something you’re doing is effective.

If the something you’re doing is ineffective, or even has unintentional negative effects, then of course it isn’t “better”.

And I’m not saying “do nothing”, I’m saying if people want to take action, use your intelligence to plan something that’s been properly thought through — rather than wasting your initiative on plugging a lazily conceived, woolly social media version of collective action.

I looked to . Can't believe you posted as 10.03 Grin
Codswallop20 · 10/04/2022 22:17

I had a mate tell me about something similar. It was a social media campaign to turn off the lights at night so we could all see the night sky and the stars better.

I had to point out that at night we all generally go to bed and turn off the lights anyway, and aside from that the streetlights would still be on anyway so utterly pointless exercise.

Are we really all so lacking in independent thought these days? Not having a go at OP here, I think MN far too bitchy anyway but I am puzzled as to why people believe everything they read.

whynotwhatknot · 10/04/2022 22:17

people on twitter always think these things have worked and now their shaming their neighbours who didnt join in

I only looked out the window, it's a bay so I can see all down the road, at just gone 10

It’s a start. People improve and work on things as they go along I guess.
Cumbriangal · 10/04/2022 22:23

How about a 3 day week, massive rates of inflation and job losses by the million?
It worked in the 1970's didn't it?
Oh yep, that showed them!

ConfusedByDesign · 10/04/2022 22:34

It might make people feel more empowered in helpless circumstances and encourage real protests going when the time is right...

TheRealMrsMac · 10/04/2022 22:41

Daft or not, we took part. It made us feel a bit better at least. Even a teenager was on board, despite the untimely break to normal service of Netflix and gaming.
