Rishi Sunak’s wife is NOT elected OR in a public role but she is a woman

BigGreenSpacehopper · 08/04/2022 09:05

Have you noticed that Zac Goldsmith (elected), Mark Carney (role of significance to all of us as Govenor of the Bank of England), 4th Viscount Rothmere (controlling shareholder and Chair of the Daily Mail) all have non Dom status but no mention is really made. However, a woman, who has no public role, has never said anything public, is being criticised for her non Dom status?

And yes she’s getting massive dividends but I imagine as it’s family money there is a massive pre-nup in place so it’s not like Rishi will be able to run off with it!

That said if I'd inherited millions and could legally save millions in tax by using a legal loop hole then I'd be an idiot not to take advantage of that.

It's not a good look for a Chancellor.

It just highlights the divide of them and us to a sickening extent

Hi all, just a reminder that while robust disagreement is fine, personal attacks are not - we'll remove posts which break our Talk Guidelines.

Correcting spelling and grammar is also against our Talk Guidelines as it's goady - please do report posts to us that do this and we'll remove them.

If Sunak becomes PM we will all be a little bit sick in our mouths

Alexandra2001 · 08/04/2022 20:27

@StormzyinaTCup

It matters because he didn't declare he had an interest in the tax affairs of his wife i.e. Nom Dom status comes up in discussions, say looking to ban it? and he takes part in them.. thats clearly very wrong.

There is also the look that whilst he and his wife save millions in tax, the rest of us get a tax hike... for a hi ranking politician he really is a complete fool, liars and deceivers always get found out, though i doubt he thought it would be Boris who would dob him in... that photo has cost him dear hasn't it.

He won't. Not now, not with the cost of living crisis.

And a short dog walk later, there it was, gone! Just like @Blossomtoes said.

@JaniieJones you really don't have thick skin. You are quick to anger when brooked and as quick to report. And, as has been said countless times here, asking women to be nice is pointless. This is not Netmums, there is robust and crude debate aplenty. It's this forum's USP.

Pity you can't just roll with it! Many do and the forum is usually the better for it.

Justanotherlurker · 08/04/2022 20:33

That might well be what the "dogwhistle" is for, but it's not the left perpetuating it. Sunak was getting far too popular for comfort in some circles and they know where their votes lie.

It isn't the Tories who have instigated this attack line, the 'dogwhistle' applies largely to the left who can't comprehend someone not white having different opinions, the left also know where there votes lie and don't like independant thought.

Back bench Tories not being happy with a non white person being popular is the flip side of the coin of back bench Labour not being happy for being an 'Uncle Tom', the only difference is that the online types who take there stance from twitter would be calling out racism if this was a Labour mp, this is Sunak with the fuck you money to say ok I will pay what I don't need to, the people sweating now are those on the opposition bench who are also in the same position (and a lot in the media) as to how their situation is different.

Yet again the 'left' have chosen the wrong situation to try and blow up and will end up moving on, it's quite funny seeing this kick off when Unison has just been called out for nepotism and fraud which was the 'outrage' point just a few weeks ago.

JengaTower · 08/04/2022 20:34

He is savings millions in tax.

Millions.

I don't want people in power with all this money

It feels like they're just doing it as a hobby

Alexandra2001 · 08/04/2022 20:34

@JaniieJones

'It is racism, what the 'left' are actually trying to dogwhistle is that the Sunaks are not really british, or that he should have control over her income.'

Exactly.

TBH its the right wing anti refuge/anti immigrant voter who would have an issue with the Sunaks, not the multi cultural left, which is what i'm fairly sure you ve called them/us in the past, usually with at least a hint of scorn lol!

Might be wrong here but when you get married aren't assets/earnings classed as joint? (in the vast majority of circumstances)

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 08/04/2022 20:35

Racism and misogyny my ass.

The right spend their time bleating on about how they abhor identity politics but are happy to use it to simp for Sunak.

Weirdwonders · 08/04/2022 20:36

She’s married to the Chancellor, if she is using loopholes to pay less tax then obviously he may benefit from those arrangements as they are married. She may not be elected but in this instance she might as well be.

If she is using loopholes to pay less tax the country, which you have pointed out now needs additional income to be raised by taxes, will lose out on the income it might have had if she didn’t arrange her affairs in her / their favour. The man she is married to makes the decisions which affect the rest of us. She chose to exempt herself from a bigger share than she should technically be paying.

@Justanotherlurker Do you think that the Chancellor and his wife should pay the same proportion of their income in tax as I and my partner do?

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 08/04/2022 20:40

He is the chancellor. It would be different if he was in a different position (like Mark Carney). But he makes decisions about all of our finances and is completely not bothered about regular people being hit so hard, while making being party to joint income being sheltered from tax. It is hard to remember this with the current batch, but we have to right to expect people in public life, who make decisions that affect us all, to adhere to the highest standards and morals and show a commitment to the country they want to be calling the shots in.

Did he, in the members interests? or was it a cosy little arrangement none of us knew about?

It was the latter or we'd have all known about and there wouldn't be this thread happening now.

It is understood the Chancellor declared his wife’s tax status when he became a minister in 2018 and the Treasury was also aware so that any potential conflicts could be managed.

I think he did what was required unless maybe you were expecting him to stand at speakers corner with a megaphone Wink

Blossomtoes · 08/04/2022 20:59

And if what was required wasn't really good enough?

I found it highly entertaining with the Paterson affair that mine and other Tory MPs suddenly thought the commons rules grossly unfair, despite never having complained about them before and strangely not complaining about them since.

If in my work I was making a decision that would benefit a member of my close family I would be barred from having anything to do with it. Why is it any different for the Chancellor?
