If you're not naturally sporty but found something you love...WHAT IS IT?!

Yes I'm posting shamelessly for traffic!

I'm hoping for some inspiration please MN.

I was always slim-ish before my son was born but I really just maintained this through eating well rather than any form of exercise.

I've never liked exercise, never enjoyed sports at all. I've tried gyms, I've managed to stick with them for months at a time but never got that "omg I'm totally addicted, love being here" feeling, it was an utter chore every time and I hated it that much that it always eventually fizzled out.

Anyway, since my son a year ago, eating well is not going great. I don't eat appallingly but meals tend to be faster / not as healthy / quick grab something whilst he's quiet style and I'm finding myself really unhappy with my body.

I want to start doing something to get into shape but what?!

My husband has suggested running but it's never ever appealed to me, I really can't imagine liking it. I am quite well... endowed in the ahem chest area... And whenever I've tried anything like the treadmill or a jog I've felt uncomfortable for the entire time. DH just seems to think I've not been trying good enough sports bras and perhaps a decent one could make it bearable?

Anyway... I'm open to trying almost anything..

If you're not naturally sporty but have really gotten "into" something, what is it?! The cheaper the better!

Cross trainers are less bouncy than treadmills.
I hate exercise but an episode of Schitts Creek is 21 minutes long which coincidentally is my limit on the machine

sausagepastapot · 03/04/2022 22:03

100%, weight training. You can start with very light weights, or just your own body weight.

It's changed my life and I love it. And I am not sporty whatsoever. It is addictive and well, brilliant.

Lottapianos · 03/04/2022 22:03

Lifting weights. Absolutely not naturally sporty, LOATHED PE at school, didn't really do any exercise until I was 30. Started running, didn't love it but loved the benefits if you know what I mean. Had to stop because of unhappy knees, got into strength training and never looked back. Now do it 4 times a week, mix of gym and home, plus yoga and walking. I feel like a different person since I discovered exercise and a balanced,, nutritious diet

Moppincraxy · 03/04/2022 22:04

Yoga. Love the down dog yoga app.

AramintaLee · 03/04/2022 22:04

Boxing. They do classes twice a week at my gym and I pair up with my friend. It's an amazing workout (I sweat loads!) and is amazing stress relief.

Hotcuppatea · 03/04/2022 22:05

It's running for me. Before I started I had no idea how much of a team sport it is. Runners are lovely and so supportive of each other.

Join a club and you'll find loads of nice people running at all different kinds of levels. Parkrun is a great way to start and, if you feel enclined, you can work your way up to 10kms or even half marathon and beyond.

A good running bra sorts out the boob issue so don't worry about that.

Well before I read your OP, I was going to suggest… running! I’m not naturally athletic at all, but I’ve developed a love for running. Not sprinting mind, longer distance running. We live rurally so going for a run for me means time out from domestic drudge, exploring the countryside, and listening to music or a podcast of my choosing. Obviously the longer your run, the more ‘alone time’ you get to enjoy too Wink

PoshPyjamas · 03/04/2022 22:06

Cycling and yoga for me

Cabbagepie · 03/04/2022 22:07

Outdoor swimming - 5 years now, summer and winter.

FairyLightPups · 03/04/2022 22:07

Weight training and ballet.

Persephoned · 03/04/2022 22:07

Swimming!

FairyLightPups · 03/04/2022 22:07

Also climbing hills and going on long naturey walks!

parietal · 03/04/2022 22:08

rowing machine or cross-trainer + podcasts or mindless TV. I hate PE and running and find exercise v dull but if I've got a good enough podcast then I'll manage to do my 15 mins per day.

ExerciseWoes · 03/04/2022 22:08

See weight training is something a few friends are into (too far away for us to do it together though Sad) and they seem to absolutely love it.

I did go to my local gym for a short time after my son was born (a very short time, making time for the gym with a non sleeping newborn is a no from me) and the weight lifting section just seemed to be crowded with big huge men in groups of all their mates. I found it far far too intimidating to even set foot in the weight area!

I wonder if there are any ladies only sessions on. I'll take a look.

Plus a shock absorber will strap your boobs in position and prevent any uncomfortable jiggling www.johnlewis.com/shock-absorber-ultimate-run-non-wired-sports-bra/black/p3371077

TokenGinger · 03/04/2022 22:09

Boxing for me. I love it. The time of the class goes so quickly, it doesn't feel like exercise.

My gym does 2-3 classes a week, and I try to make at least 2 of them. I feel so good afterwards.

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 03/04/2022 22:10

Ladies softball cricket

Thestoppedfan · 03/04/2022 22:10

Weight training for me it doesn’t feel as monotonous as cardio

JessicaBrassica · 03/04/2022 22:10

I took up running in my late 30s. Shock absorber bras are fabulous.
I also enjoy paddlesport (kayak racing but also sup and canoeing) and climbing. Any help?

comeundone · 03/04/2022 22:10

Running, Pilates, hiit, I'm not at all sporty and I'm not sure enjoy is the word is use to describe running, but it is great to get a run done first thing and then know your steps, calories, cardio are taken care of for the day. Yes to good bra (32GG means this is vital for me, bravissimo have a decent selection if ££)

escapingthecity · 03/04/2022 22:10

Swimming. I realised that the reason I hated team sports at school is that I have no hand eye coordination so I'm hopeless at anything which involves throwing, hitting or catching. Head down in a swimming pool doing my own thing is a totally different story, I love pushing my body to go faster and stronger in the water and use lengths almost as meditation.

Birdy272 · 03/04/2022 22:11

I tolerate cycling. I don't love twatty bell ends trying to kill me on the roads but still I continue.

gardenwar · 03/04/2022 22:11

Group HIIT classes. Any kind of group class really, I don't work as hard alone. Preferably with a strict but nice instructor who gets pissed off with people who don't turn up. I need the fear!

Wigeon · 03/04/2022 22:12

I know you said running doesn’t appeal, but that’s what I finally started doing in my mid 30s because:

It’s free

I listen to podcasts and actually actively look forward to going out because I can listen to the next episode

It seems much less boring than gym, because you are running different routes outside. A few of ny routes are really pretty. Even running the streets isn’t too bad.

It was motivational doing the Couch to 5k app because you get better!

Since I’ve done that I’ve improved more just by doing it regularly, which is satisfying.

I am loads fitter than I used to be.

Also used to go to a Zumba class which was way more fun than most kinds of exercise I can think of.

Did yoga but I wanted cardiovascular, so that’s not good for that.

I sometimes do HIIT classes on YouTube at home if it’s rainy, which is ok, especially if it’s got good music.

I did swimming lengths while the DC had their lessons for a while but found it incredibly boring.

Changechangychange · 03/04/2022 22:12

Swimming, cycling. I do actually love running, but needs to be somewhere scenic - running on a treadmill is boring as fuck, as is grinding it out round and round the park.

I’m a 34G, and wear a Freya sports bra from Bravissimo. Never got on with Shock Absorbers, they are an odd shape.
