If you're not naturally sporty but found something you love...WHAT IS IT?!

Yes I'm posting shamelessly for traffic!

I'm hoping for some inspiration please MN.

I was always slim-ish before my son was born but I really just maintained this through eating well rather than any form of exercise.

I've never liked exercise, never enjoyed sports at all. I've tried gyms, I've managed to stick with them for months at a time but never got that "omg I'm totally addicted, love being here" feeling, it was an utter chore every time and I hated it that much that it always eventually fizzled out.

Anyway, since my son a year ago, eating well is not going great. I don't eat appallingly but meals tend to be faster / not as healthy / quick grab something whilst he's quiet style and I'm finding myself really unhappy with my body.

I want to start doing something to get into shape but what?!

My husband has suggested running but it's never ever appealed to me, I really can't imagine liking it. I am quite well... endowed in the ahem chest area... And whenever I've tried anything like the treadmill or a jog I've felt uncomfortable for the entire time. DH just seems to think I've not been trying good enough sports bras and perhaps a decent one could make it bearable?

Anyway... I'm open to trying almost anything..

If you're not naturally sporty but have really gotten "into" something, what is it?! The cheaper the better!

maggiecate · 03/04/2022 22:52

Dance class? Adult ballet, ballroom, Scottish country dance - brilliant fun,.

SpringHasSprungYay · 03/04/2022 22:55

Swimming & yoga.

BlooberryBiskits · 03/04/2022 22:55

+1 for running (more jogging in my case). I’m so unsporty/clumsy, but started walking, then jogging bits, then running…, easy, free, time efficient & very mentally relaxing for me

However - any exercise is good exercise if you want to do it

Also ‘blessed’ on the boobage (F/G cup). I like M&S high impact wired (also v comfy as an everyday bra) & the ultra high impact wired sports bras: good value and v durable. I prefer them to other types like ‘shock absorber’ as they are more of a normal bra shape & so feel less constricting

Ohya · 03/04/2022 22:55

I've maintained my weight by walking 3.5 miles at least 5 days a week (roughly 1 hour walk) and daily hula hooping for half an hour. It's fun especially in front of the telly watching my favourite program

Didicat · 03/04/2022 22:56

Scottish country dancing is good cardio without ending up a mess and social meet a wide range of folk and uses your brain.

In general I dislike sports, but I love dancing

Goatinthegarden · 03/04/2022 22:56

I hated cardio with a passion until about 30. I assumed runners, etc. all just loved it and must be naturally good at it and then I learned the secret to pushing through the stamina barrier.I’m now 35 am addicted to hiking, cycling and running.

For me, no matter how fit I am now, the first km of a run or, first forty minutes of a mountain climb, etc. are always hard as hell and quite unpleasant, but I’ve learned to keep going and you sort of come through the other side into a rewarding sense of euphoria.

C25k didn’t work for me because I think it trains you to want to keep stopping. I was told to mark out a 5k circuit and then just start running…I was told I could slow down to the slowest jog ever if I needed to, but never turn it into a walk. That method worked first time for me.

Concestor · 03/04/2022 22:56

Weights
Yoga
Dance
Kayaking/canoeing/dragon boating
I also almost enjoy the more weights based exercise classes at my gym. Almost.

Pea79 · 03/04/2022 22:58

Badminton!

Honestly, I've always been crap at sport and now I'm overweight and in my 40s, it's unlikely to ever improve. Badminton is the only sport I have ever enjoyed.

WoolyMammoth55 · 03/04/2022 22:58

OP, I'm a busty PE-hater and haven't solved these issues completely but:

It's non-wired, I wear my usual non-wired sleep bra underneath that I chill out at home in, then this bad boy over the top and WOW those puppies are under control :)
  • Yoga is amazing, you need the right teacher, this is the one I love: www.holisticyoga.co.uk/about-holistic-yoga/ but Yoga with Adrienne is fine and free on youtube if you want to have a taster!
  • Elliptical cross-trainers are amazing if you have space for one. Few power tunes on your headphones and away you go...
  • I also really do well with dance; either classes or just a 5-Rhythms type thing where you listen to the music and go crazy - but you have to be able to switch off the self-conscious bit! If you can't then those won't work :)
Best of luck, come back and update us sometime! x
GameofPhones · 03/04/2022 22:59

Dog walking.

Minikievs · 03/04/2022 22:59

Group exercise classes. Mostly Les Mills (particularly combat) and I love the music, the routine, I can feel and see myself improving.
But I'm also quite partial to an old lady legsbumsandtums class!
I didn't own a pair of trainers until my late 30s. Terribly unsporty. Now I go to the gym more often than any of my friends.

TracyMosby · 03/04/2022 22:59

Ice skating and ballet

TabithaHazel · 03/04/2022 22:59

Swimming and yoga. I've tried getting into running a few times but it's just not for me!

CatherinedeBourgh · 03/04/2022 23:00

Rock climbing.

I hate gyms too. I started with rock climbing (indoors) gradually evolved onto outdoors, then lots more outdoor things.

I do now run, but because I can see what other things being fit allows me to do iyswim? I've never loved it and never will.

Still hate gyms. All the exercise I do these days is outside.

OhMyDays22 · 03/04/2022 23:00

Golf!!

It’s fantastic!

Who’s have thought it?!

Flaskfan · 03/04/2022 23:00

Weight classes. Men don't tend to do classes as much, so mainly women. I don't love exercise, but I love being slim.

Running. Get a shock absorber bra, so nothing moves. Get proper trainers. I'm a lockdown runner. Never saw myself as a runner (slim hourglass.i look all wrong running), but did c25k and run about 15k a week now.

I'm still not in love with exercise. I don't love running, really. I often spend longer talking myself into it than actually running. But I like:
Competing with myself
Watching the seasons change
Being out by myself
Braving the elements
Occasionally, very occasionally, that feeling that you're flying
That bit where you've done your 5/10/15k and you can stop, but you feel massively proud that you've been out

LightSpeeds · 03/04/2022 23:02

Hula hooping is quite enjoyable (but get a heavy one).

Solidaritea · 03/04/2022 23:02

Mountain biking. Amazing fun. Don't need to be "sporty" - I've always sucked at team sports but with biking no one is relying on you but yourself. Ride trails at weekends whenever possible, and around the local area for training and exercise.

Stevenage689 · 03/04/2022 23:03

Kickboxing. But at a proper boxing gym/dojo, not at the regular gym.

waterlego · 03/04/2022 23:04

@sausagepastapot

100%, weight training. You can start with very light weights, or just your own body weight.

It's changed my life and I love it. And I am not sporty whatsoever. It is addictive and well, brilliant.

Yes, this! Weight training has helped me achieve a body shape I really love. Looking strong and athletic is empowering and I can’t remember the last time I weighed myself because it has become totally irrelevant to me. The number on the scales is meaningless because I have massively reduced my body fat and can see my muscle tone.
absol · 03/04/2022 23:08

Kettlebells classes are my favourite but it took a good 6 months before it went from a chore to something i actively enjoy

SocksAndTheCity · 03/04/2022 23:09

Weights, yoga and running for me (and I'm a 32G). I don't 'love' any of them bar possibly yoga, but they make me feel great afterwards and I can eat more Smile.
If you're going to run in a gym, it's worth asking about the treadmills and impact; my gym has two different types and the impact is far less on the older ones (I can't run outside any more because the concrete did for my back and hips, so these are great for me).

I'd also recommend classes if you're unsure about doing things by yourself - my gym has weightlifting and kettlebell ones plus all sorts of HIIT type things which I also like and try to do at least two or three times a week.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 03/04/2022 23:10

Zumba.
Sign up for a few sessions in advance, and then you HAVE to go…

I’ve worked out that in order to exercise, I have to pay in advance, then I accidentally discover that I bloody love it 🤣

Cherrysoup · 03/04/2022 23:13

Badminton. Discovered the love whilst being harassed by the upstairs neighbour, we stayed out of the place as much as possible. I don’t mean popping the shuttlecock back over the net, play someone fitter, run round like a mad thing, leap like a salmon, extreme badminton, I call it.
