If you're not naturally sporty but found something you love...WHAT IS IT?!

Yes I'm posting shamelessly for traffic!

I'm hoping for some inspiration please MN.

I was always slim-ish before my son was born but I really just maintained this through eating well rather than any form of exercise.

I've never liked exercise, never enjoyed sports at all. I've tried gyms, I've managed to stick with them for months at a time but never got that "omg I'm totally addicted, love being here" feeling, it was an utter chore every time and I hated it that much that it always eventually fizzled out.

Anyway, since my son a year ago, eating well is not going great. I don't eat appallingly but meals tend to be faster / not as healthy / quick grab something whilst he's quiet style and I'm finding myself really unhappy with my body.

I want to start doing something to get into shape but what?!

My husband has suggested running but it's never ever appealed to me, I really can't imagine liking it. I am quite well... endowed in the ahem chest area... And whenever I've tried anything like the treadmill or a jog I've felt uncomfortable for the entire time. DH just seems to think I've not been trying good enough sports bras and perhaps a decent one could make it bearable?

Anyway... I'm open to trying almost anything..

If you're not naturally sporty but have really gotten "into" something, what is it?! The cheaper the better!

Spinning and I dislike most other forms of exercise.

Definitely found it a challenge at the start but instructor took it easily on the beginners. You can do just a 30 minutes class and will feel like you have had a decent workout.

Brasissimo is great for sports bras. Shockabsorber is probably one of the best.

ikeepseeingit · 03/04/2022 22:30

You can do weight training with resistance bands OP. Get a good set, they take up very little room. I also have loved weight training, much nicer than anything else I have tried. I also like yoga and a gentle Pilates class on YouTube.

ExerciseWoes · 03/04/2022 22:31

Oh and thanks very much for all the bra suggestions. I'll be investing definitely!

T'ai Chi
Changed my life which I know is a big claim but it did. Never been sporty but always fancied having a go at T'ai Chi which i did during maternity leave and got hooked. Trained as an instructor and taught if for 14 years.

You don't get out of breath, you don't get hot and sweaty and go bright pink in the face (which i have always done with any form of exercise). Excellent for stamina, balance, leg strength, co-ordination. It's sociable too and you can continue to practise well into later life

SweatyChamoisPad · 03/04/2022 22:33

I thought I was shit at sport when I was at school because all we did was play rounders or netball and I have no hand/eye co-ordination so can’t catch, throw, bat or shoot.

Started cycle commuting when I couldn’t afford the parking at work and fell in love with it. Ride to work, to the shops, to mates, sportive, on cycling holidays etc. I also really love power walking, and that took me to fell walking which is brilliant. I love the views, the challenge, the navigation - it makes me feel really capable.

PersonaNonGarter · 03/04/2022 22:33

Yoga, Pilates and walking.

givethatbabyaname · 03/04/2022 22:35

Re running: when I started, I could only walk fast. Seriously. Walking made me sweaty. It was embarrassing. Within 2 weeks I was half walking, half jogging. Then, jogging. Then running.

Years on and I’m running races. I don’t care about beating other people, but I do like to beat my own times. I still don’t “enjoy” running, but I’m stuck with it now because I feel so bloody awful when I don’t run. As I get older I know that it’s good for my bones and muscles and internal organs. So, I do it like I go to the dentist or get my smear test done. It’s also the only, precious, alone time I get.

Make sure you do your stretches.

akissbeforebed · 03/04/2022 22:35

Tap dancing - I have very little co-ordination and I'm rubbish at it but it's such good fun it doesn't really feel like exercising.

HeddaGarbled · 03/04/2022 22:36

Walking (one long, one short per week); Pilates (one hour a week on Zoom); Keep Fit in the village hall (one hour a week); swimming (just when I can fit it in - maybe 3 half hour sessions over the last month). Lost half a stone since Christmas 🙂

I can’t say I “love” any of them - maybe walking on a sunny day in a scenic place - but they’re all good fun.

Perhaps a variety of different activities in shorter/fewer sessions would be easier to keep up long-term.

Sports bra wise try this one- I have two of these and they are great.

Another 1 for running. Hated it in my youth but the fresh air and feeling of accomplishment is amazing. Start on couch to 5k.
Also agree with boxing or similar. I do body combat. I love it
Feel powerful.
Im not sporty. Little coordination do tennis etc waste of time. Played hockey at school though..

ExerciseWoes · 03/04/2022 22:37

I really used to like long walks tbf. I find I struggle to do it now though as I'd have to find a way to take DS with me. I have one of those carrier things but its just horrid on my back after a while and finding nice naturey walks you can push a pram the whole time for hasn't been easy.

That's why I'm sort of looking for something I can do more quickly. Throw DS at DH for an hour when he gets in from work!

I'll have a look at the couch to 5k app

Heavy weight training.
I love working working out by myself and trying to beat my previous lifts.

KatharinaRosalie · 03/04/2022 22:39

Bodypump is great for people who want to lift weights but find the weights room at gym intimidating. Group classes would be great, but you can also get the app and set of weights and do it at home.

EasilyDistracted77 · 03/04/2022 22:40

Netball. I can't play anymore because of a knee problem, but I played in fantastically positive team (i.e. we weren't very good but we had fun!) in an amateur league.

L0stinCyberspace · 03/04/2022 22:41

YouTube yoga and AllTrails hiking app.

GloriaSilver · 03/04/2022 22:42

Spin classes, changed my life

SLT2022 · 03/04/2022 22:43

Aquafit

Bornsloppy · 03/04/2022 22:44

@ExerciseWoes definitely varying abilities - I go to a class at the local leisure centre so it's not a dedicated studio which always seem to attract the more hardcore! They turn the lights down to get the disco vibe going and handily no one can see you sweating your arse off.

RedRoseRay · 03/04/2022 22:44

Jogging - 30 minutes 6/7 days a week. Start on couch to 5k. Play a Spotify running music playlist alongside it. Never been a sporty/active person and it’s changed my life.

kannayya · 03/04/2022 22:46

OP, you just sound like me. I walked few times so that I explored my neighbour hood. Then I walked down to garden centres to check their seed stock, plants and the ones on sale. That wasn't really enough. I love to eat carbs all the time. One day I fallowed a no carb/ dairy/sugar diet. I also started doing cycling to school runs( we moved 4.5 km away from school). DH and I share this. So I max do cycling for an hour a day( to and pro) which is enough of exercise for any.ate good amount of protein and veg .I enjoy my food more now, thanks to my interests in foods mean I can make tasty food with any random ingredients which has become handy. After 9 months ,I put down 15 kg + any excess weight I gained by skipping routine. Now I do same exercise, but eat mix of everything but watchful.so not putting up but still going down slowly. Am just few kilos above my BMI now.so no rush.

Lalliella · 03/04/2022 22:47

Cycling and badminton for me

AledsiPad · 03/04/2022 22:48

Pilates, swimming and aqua aerobics. I need low impact due to a health condition but all of these make me feel strong and healthy.

Blossom64265 · 03/04/2022 22:50

Deep water aerobics

Not just water aerobics. This is a variation in the deep end where you can’t touch the bottom and you wear a light floatation belt. The water supports your body completely and regulates your body temperature so you can get an intense workout even if you have physical problems.

Sadly, the rec center in my city that offered it stopped the class and I haven’t been able to find another.
