Are we taking bets yet on when mass civil unrest will begin re. Cost of living?

Having frozen my backside off these past two days as I'm terrified to have the heating on longer than an hour a day, I'm thinking that this will be utterly intolerable come next Winter. Will there be mass civil unrest and the guillotine rolled out while the affluent are targeted by the desperate and those with nothing left to loose?

That having two car households, money for eating out, disposable fashion, endless Starbucks was not the usual.

Is that the usual though?

I get what you’re saying, for a lot of people it isn’t. But for a lot of people it is. However I guess they’re also the lucky ones that they can cut back on stuff to put towards bills.
BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/04/2022 08:58

Most people need two cars for work though.

Discountclaimed · 03/04/2022 09:02

I doubt it will get to that- British gas will be used, inflation will stabilise etc. It’s far more likely that people will pressurise their MP’s and there will be a swing towards labour.

In the 70s my parents both “needed” a car to get to work but no way could have afforded two. So dad rode an old moped. He was head of department at a secondary school and my mum was a teacher so neither were badly paid. But stuff was more expensive in proportion to wages (apart from property). Cars were expensive, food was really expensive, clothes cost a fortune.

There won't be riots , we are not french .

Not everyone is struggling , two threads on Mumsnet currently .

Which Cartier watch shall I go for
Where to ski with the children for less than £8k.

A vocal group are struggling but certainly not everyone .

Antarcticant · 03/04/2022 09:06

Instead of rioting, people actually draw fucking rainbows! And either pretend or actually think the NHS is wonderful.

But is that not about supporting the front-line staff? It isn't the fault of the nurse on the ward or the GP in the surgery that the NHS is fucked. People clapped and drew rainbows for the workers, not the institution.

@Alexandra2001

Your posts are so full of lies and errors that it’s difficult to know where to start really. Spewing absolute shit like it’s gospel, doesn’t make it true. I’m embarrassed for you.

I live on the Franco-Suisse border and have done for the last 11 years. I know how much petrol costs here, I don’t need some insular Brit like you preaching what they think the costs are at me from their newspaper, thanks.

I’m well aware of the French political situation, DH is French; half my family live there. Support for Le Pen and Zemmour combined is approaching 40%. Macron is in all the newspapers today, warning that the far right could win the election. Take your head ouf of your arse.

Incredible isn’t it? Someone is also concerned about being trapped because private school fees are going up in September.

Trapped? Someone needs to inform her we have free schools here.

Good lord.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 03/04/2022 09:21

@ivykaty44

The government isn't responsible for those rises

So how come the French government put a price cap on their utility companies if 4%? Whilst our government didnt

Exactly. 4% is minuscule compared to the ruinous increases that we are facing. I find it utterly shameful that our Tory government isn’t taking this seriously. It should be treated as an emergency in the same way that the Covid Pandemic would. This is going to cost lives, through people literally freezing in their own homes and not being able to feed families and I believe it will drive many to suicide. What is the point of them being in Government and reaping the rewards of their position (including the £2,200 pay rises that each of them are getting) if they don’t do their job properly?

One only has to look on Facebook support groups related to this to see see how this affecting normal everyday people. The stories I’ve been reading are utterly heartbreaking.

Definitely.
It just illustrates how different peoples circumstances are

@Allywill

I had to have my wall insulation sucked out. It caused terrible damp. Believe me it’s not necessarily a good thing - houses were built with cavities for a reason.
Same here. North of England with wind driven rain was a recipe for disaster
Wrongkindofovercoat · 03/04/2022 09:32

I suppose we could all contact our local MP ?

Wrongkindofovercoat · 03/04/2022 09:36

I think it might get interesting in the local elections for the Conservatives this time around.

Woofins · 03/04/2022 09:44

Come to northern Ireland we'll show you how to riot!

emuloc · 03/04/2022 09:48

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

The jubilee weekend would be the perfect opportunity for a huge demo with civil disobedience.

I agree, what are we supposed to be celebrating there? A spoiled, pampered family who have done absolutely nothing to deserve their wealth and who support a feckless pervert in their midst, even parading him around for everyone to see?

Meanwhile, people are cold and hungry inside their houses and are supposed to be organising street parties or whatever?

How about spending the jubilee money on something to help ordinary people?

They make me sick.

The Royal family will continue to live in luxury, and will do absolutely nothing, while lots of people struggle to heat, eat, and pay for a roof over their heads. They serve no purpose whatsoever.
sashh · 03/04/2022 09:50

And as for idiots also saying that they can't possibly vote for Labour because of gender crap has clearly lost the plot and also clearly doesn't have a worry in the world because no matter how much you dont like certain answers being given by keir starmer/Labour Party etc you hold your nose and vote for what really makes a difference to your cost of living, your children's lives and the cost of your income

Sorry but educational policies dictated by Stonewall are damaging to women and to children.

Do you want your daughter to be sexually assaulted and then be told it didn't happen because the boy doing the assaulting is a girl?

Do you want your sensitive, artistic boy to be told he is really a girl and should have surgery and drugs?

Do you want to share a hospital ward with a man who is getting his rocks off being on a woman's ward?

Do you want to see men on all women short lists? For men to dominate women's sports?

To me the safety of women, girls and vulnerable people is more important than the cost of living.

And no I am not rich, I live on benefits due to disability on a council estate.

I completely agree. The sycophantic fawning of people in the UK over the royals, makes me want to burn my passport. The cognitive dissonance is outstanding.

Ds is journalist on national press. The Royals sell more papers than anything else. Readers go mad for it.

Ds hates doing them😂

Antarcticant · 03/04/2022 10:08

The Jubilee is estimated to cost 15 million. Think how many homes that could heat for a year Sad .

Way back a poster asked what would labour do? No responses.

That's the problem, either they have no ideas, or, actually, there is nothing extra/different that can be done.

This is global. You can tweak about in the edges, as we did during Covid, keeping people on furlough etc. But at the moment, we are in the same boat as everyone else.

Florenz · 03/04/2022 10:18

There's plenty that Labour could do. But they won't, because they are useless.

Blossomtoes · 03/04/2022 10:18

But you trust BORIS JOHSON on womens issues

I know, the irony is staggering. And they trust him not to do a U turn the moment it’s expedient. Mind blowing.
