Are we taking bets yet on when mass civil unrest will begin re. Cost of living?

Having frozen my backside off these past two days as I'm terrified to have the heating on longer than an hour a day, I'm thinking that this will be utterly intolerable come next Winter. Will there be mass civil unrest and the guillotine rolled out while the affluent are targeted by the desperate and those with nothing left to loose?

OP posts:
SmellyOldOwls · 02/04/2022 19:08

Maybe just don't vote Tory? Is that an option?

Firstly, that's not useful in the timeframe we are talking about for the energy crisis, next general election is in over 2 years time.

Secondly, labour are alienating many women (and men) with their stance on gender identity, and even if this doesn't increase conservative voters, which I think it will, it is absolutely going to decrease labour votes.

Roselilly36 · 02/04/2022 19:11

Net Zero is totally unrealistic/achievable, plant life will suffer etc. Families need support, heating and food. Gov needs to step in, but they are so out of touch, I am not holding my breath. Look after your close neighbours and the vulnerable in the local community as best you can, it’s all any of us can do.

pinkstripeycat · 02/04/2022 19:13

We are the same as you OP. All sitting in our coats with scarves on and wrapped in blankets.
We had been living like this for years until 2.5yrs ago I got a new self employed job, more money, things looking up, heating on.
Then covid came, Government said my sector weren’t legally allowed to work but I wasn’t entitled to the SEISS grant from the Government as I’d not been doing the job long enough. Didn’t matter that my income was zero for 7 months. We had to borrow money to live.
So we are back where we were years ago. Paying off debt which has occurred as I couldn’t get Government help so no money for heating or much food to be honest.

At least our kids aren’t babies and can run around to warm up and we’re healthy and not vulnerable.
So many worse off than us. Just holding out for the summer

Manekinek0 · 02/04/2022 19:15

As we are British I'm putting money on September-october. It looks like fuel prices will be going up again at that time and food prices will be far higher by then.

HirplesWithHaggis · 02/04/2022 19:16

@PearlclutchersInc

And what exactly will rioting achieve. It's not achieved anything in the past.

Not least because the current government couldnt care less.

Got rid of the (Tory) Poll Tax.
Sbbhnfc · 02/04/2022 19:17

Historically people usually have to be at the edge of starvation before a revolution happens. And by "people" I mean the educated middle of society (the poorer and more vulnerable will already be long dead by that point). Why do you think BJ and his cronies are passing some of their legislation like the Police Bill???

woodhill · 02/04/2022 19:17

@ivykaty44

Extinction rebellion isn't helping either

They want warm homes for all and the government to fund this through upgraded insulation etc

You suggesting people would rather be cold?

But they were out today protesting about the stepping up of oil production. That's what I meant
mbosnz · 02/04/2022 19:17

Depressingly, it looks like democracy is not in fashion. . .

Mamamia7962 · 02/04/2022 19:17

There have been protests today in London and other cities. I think it was all very civilised though.

Agree with PP why would anyone want to riot and cause damage to businesses/properties that people have worked hard for.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/04/2022 19:18

Bought Thatcher down with the poll tax riots.

People seem more concerned demonstrating about 5G chips being inserted. Priorities…

Greydog · 02/04/2022 19:21

Can't see it happening. Years ago I was on a course and we talked about the British attitudes, and the tutor told me that in the UK we have a "master and servant" mind set, which is why we don't do what the French do!

This. People are going to be worrying about looting and the pitch fork brigade rampaging through the streets next like they did with the start of the pandemic. Who has time to riot when one has meals to plan on a shoestring and finances to organise down to the last penny?

It got rid of the Poll Tax pretty sharpish

One of the few things that would cause this reprehensible shower to take notice is if the UK public did take action that had a significant impact on the pockets of the uber-wealthy. Trashing high streets is unlikely to do that, but long term civil disobedience and disorder on a mass scale is not good for business and money-making, so while it might not have the exact outcome intended, you can be sure Johnson and his kleptocracy would being taking it pretty seriously before long.

DrManhattan · 02/04/2022 19:22

Never gonna happen. No one can be arsed.

Fedupbuyer · 02/04/2022 19:23

I think crime will go through the roof I know that much!

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Sadly this is Mumsnet and there’s the BTL property portfolio for all the benevolent landlords to consider. So more like “We’ll carry on voting Tory, but quietly.”

Have you forgotten about the poll tax riots? Or numerous other rots right back to the Rebecca Riots which brought about change.
IncompleteSenten · 02/04/2022 19:27

In Britain?
No.
We'll take it up the arse as usual.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/04/2022 19:28

Won't happen

They'll just blame it on immigrants like all those people coming across the Channel Hmm (very few)

By the end of the year there will have been a drip feed to the media by the right wing of how much the (very few) Ukrainians are costing the economy...

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 02/04/2022 19:28

Aye, the self-proclaimed 'left wing' mumsnet, which not only is remarkably illiberal, socially conservative, reactionary, and snooty, but contains an absurd number of self-confessed Tory voters for a place that invariably proclaims itself to be a hotbed of cuddly, lefty ideals.

ncforinkhelp · 02/04/2022 19:29

As long as people vote Tory, this will continue and we will just live with it. And poor people will die.

Thinkbiglittleone · 02/04/2022 19:30

@Libertaire

This is Britain. We don’t do ‘mass civil unrest’. We leave that sort of thing to the French, who are actually prepared to stand up to their rulers, rather than just complaining about them. We just moan about how badly the country is run, then go out and re-elect the Tories.
I was just thinking exactly this sadly.

I don't think we will have mass riots at all.

Puddinandpie · 02/04/2022 19:31

@XDownwiththissortofthingX exactly!
@ncforinkhelp also exactly

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 02/04/2022 19:32

I agree with PPs. I don’t think people will riot. I’d love to be proved wrong though..
