Are we taking bets yet on when mass civil unrest will begin re. Cost of living?

Having frozen my backside off these past two days as I'm terrified to have the heating on longer than an hour a day, I'm thinking that this will be utterly intolerable come next Winter. Will there be mass civil unrest and the guillotine rolled out while the affluent are targeted by the desperate and those with nothing left to loose?

Extinction rebellion isn't helping either

They want warm homes for all and the government to fund this through upgraded insulation etc

You suggesting people would rather be cold?

TwoDaysOff · 02/04/2022 18:40

Everyone will be too cold and malnourished to riot...

Bluetowelsandflannels · 02/04/2022 18:40

It's a perfect storm. We desperately need to get to net zero but on a day to day basis how can that possibly be a concern if you're worried to death about the cost of living.

mbosnz · 02/04/2022 18:40

Isn't May Bank Holiday traditional?

Onionpatch · 02/04/2022 18:41

I dont know. Younger people are so busy working to keep afloat with rent and would worry about losing their jobs I guess if mass unemployment hits they might.

That's the Insulate Britain group I think not XR

UsernameInTheTown · 02/04/2022 18:42

What about mass starvation and people frozen to death/illnesses exacerbated by the cold, not to mention poverty and debt fuelled suicides?

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 02/04/2022 18:43

Are t they just a branch of the same group?

ancientgran · 02/04/2022 18:44

No people riot best when it is warm and dry. I give it till June.
Oblomov22 · 02/04/2022 18:44

No. No riots. No demonstrations. We'll just get on with it. What choice do we have?

To riot?
MintJulia · 02/04/2022 18:51

The weather is the best policeman - which means it will have to be warm and fine for people to riot - August bank holiday is traditional or any warm humid weekend.

CharlieSays13 · 02/04/2022 18:52

The day the feed bill for our cattle went up 60% overnight my laid back, non melodramatic husband declared that there would be riots in the street by the end of the year. If farmers can't afford to grow and produce food where is the food coming from? And at what price? Add this to fuel poverty and we're absolutely fucked.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 02/04/2022 18:53

We need to be more like the French.

Allywill · 02/04/2022 18:55

I had to have my wall insulation sucked out. It caused terrible damp. Believe me it’s not necessarily a good thing - houses were built with cavities for a reason.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 02/04/2022 18:55

Bets on when?

Never, and probably Con+5 by the time the next GE rolls around.

Libertaire · 02/04/2022 18:57

This is Britain. We don’t do ‘mass civil unrest’. We leave that sort of thing to the French, who are actually prepared to stand up to their rulers, rather than just complaining about them. We just moan about how badly the country is run, then go out and re-elect the Tories.

LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 02/04/2022 18:59

In the UK people prefer to knock each other down and pick on each other rather than question their leaders.

The older ones think anyone complaining didn’t have it hard enough in the past, and the younger ones compete for eco credentials.

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/04/2022 19:00

The energy companies need to be held to account. Their profits have been huge over the last few years, the should take the hit now.

PearlclutchersInc · 02/04/2022 19:02

And what exactly will rioting achieve. It's not achieved anything in the past.

Not least because the current government couldnt care less.

Flapjacker48 · 02/04/2022 19:03

No, this is Britain, there will be increased moaning and "discontent" on places like Mumsnet and other social media. That's it.

Georgeskitchen · 02/04/2022 19:04

How is rioting going to help? It's not going to help the poor innocent people whose property and businesses get destroyed by people smashing them up, is it?

FangsForTheMemory · 02/04/2022 19:04

Why do you think Johnson's government has passed laws making demos illegal then?
Cyw2018 · 02/04/2022 19:07

It's not rioting weather in the winter months!

On a more serious note, so many of us have jobs that require a DBS check these days that we can not risk rioting or even defending our rights and opinions on certain subjects as if we get arrested and charged or convicted we are likely to be out of a job with all the knock repercussions that come with that.

Likewise with taking industrial action, the majority of people have mortgages and/or credit, so can't afford to strike for long, and the government knows this.
