Take Dd to HP studio tour when I stand by JKR

My 16 year old has been a HUGH HP fan since she was old enough to read the books and watch the films,she watched the reunion,I didn't as I do not agree with how JKR has been treated for speaking up about her views which I share.Dd has wanted to go for years and because she has worked so very hard for her GCSE exams i thought I'd treat her,but morally i feel like a turn coat.
Yabu- you should boycott all things HP
Yanbu- it's for your Dd and she'd love it

Definitely go and wear the adult human female t shirt, or I ❤️ JKR, or the 'this witch doesn't burn' t shirt that JKR wore.

I'm definitely going to do this now 😁

Bootothegoose · 31/03/2022 13:16

Even though she is often not named in associate she still owns the rights (although only to an extent I believer?) every penny made at the studios/shops etc a portion will still go to JKR.

Beyond that, what she aimed for with the HP books was to get children reading. I’m sure she would encourage all children to enjoy the story regardless of who would profit financially.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 31/03/2022 13:21

Please, let’s all of us, supportive or critical of JKR’s views on where the boundaries on women’s spaces lie and why, let’s just make these decisions on how much we enjoy HP.

I couldn’t bear the books and have never watched a film, but Dc loved them and wanted to go to the HP studio - I really enjoyed it. Great day out and as the creator of the work and owner of the IP, JKR has earned her royalties for the HP output.

WilsonMilson · 31/03/2022 13:28

You’re overthinking this entire issue, just go and have fun. Life doesn’t always have to be so complicated.

Also, refusing to watch a film because someone who’s view you don’t agree with is in it seems a bit ott. In fact your reaction to this entire issue seems rather excessive.

Phobiaphobic · 31/03/2022 13:33

@girlmom21

I'm sure she's grateful for your loyalty but would prefer your money
I suspect she's rich enough to prefer it the other way around, but it seems to me going is a win-win for OP anyway.

@Kanaloa

Can’t comment on how good HPW is though as we’ve not been! I’d love to go and ds11 and dd10 would love love it but the two little ones wouldn’t really get it. It’s meant to be really good though.
It's amazing, @Kanaloa. But there's so, so much there it's worth waiting until the kids are older, imo. It's a full day, I've been twice and I know I've still missed stuff!
cookiemonster2468 · 31/03/2022 13:36

Your daughter is 16. Why are you making this decision for her? It's up to her if she wants to go. If you don't want to go yourself then fine - don't put that on your daughter.

Kanaloa · 31/03/2022 13:43

@SirSamVimesCityWatch

Yes I thought that to be honest. My youngest is only 6 and hasn’t even read the books or seen the films yet so obviously just wouldn’t get much out of it! But hoping we can go when they’re a bit older because friends who’ve been have told me it’s amazing.

Fernandina · 31/03/2022 13:50

I'm quite sure that JKR continues to earn royalties from WB, so by boycotting them you are also reducing her income.

Sortilege · 31/03/2022 13:52

@NewbieDivergent

Yes so sorry,worded so wrong,my issue is with Warner Bros owning the Studio tour. Should have said boycott all things Warner.I also refuse to watch any films now with the stars who she made famous and now vilify her.
She still makes money from the films and the studio tour.

That's reasonable Newbie, I hate the way she has been treated.

However I think it's fine to go as it won't make any real direct impact on JK Rowling regardless and your daughter will enjoy it.

TonyBlairsLover · 31/03/2022 14:07

YABU. JKR is right and I can’t stand her works

thisplaceisweird · 31/03/2022 14:09

@FreddieStandensBFF

How have Warner Brothers not stood by her? She was at the Fantastic Beasts Premiere on Tuesday.
A huge movie studio is not going to come forward to make such a controversial and sensitive statement unless seriously pushed. The fact she is still being invited to premieres shows that they haven't made any statement against her.

Stop being an idiot and just go.

whynotwhatknot · 31/03/2022 14:10

She gets a Cut so go and enjoy and stick it to warner bros

bellinisurge · 31/03/2022 14:19

Go. Best way to support her is to show what a national treasure she is. A tax paying philanthropist and not afraid to express support for women's rights and LGB rights.

DrSbaitso · 31/03/2022 14:25

Nobody associates WB with HP anywhere near as readily as they associate JKR.

MarvelMrs · 31/03/2022 14:32

I think you shouldn’t let your stance of JKR rob you of precious time with your DD. I say this as a mum of three older teens who are growing up and I treasure any time with them. Life passes too quickly to let celebrity issues affect your family relationships.
I would also watch the films for the same reasons despite completely understanding your reasons for not doing so. The younger cast are happy to bite to the hand that fed them especially since they are not the most skilled actors. But your own DD should always come first.

VeryMuchFlaggingMinty · 31/03/2022 15:08

I could see where you were coming from but honestly go...it's bloody amazing (and make sure you take out a second mortgage for the shop and lashings of butterbeer in the cafe).

I'm not even a diehard Potter fan although I stand with JKR and love her Strike books, but I thought HP World was awesome and would love to go again.

Lacedwithgrace · 31/03/2022 15:12

Don't go

Freddie28 · 31/03/2022 15:15

It's not that great, no where near as good as it could have been.

Thoosa · 31/03/2022 15:18

Oh god, don’t touch that revolting butter beer. It’s like root bear gone extremely wrong. Envy

DrSbaitso · 31/03/2022 15:19

@Freddie28

What would you improve, for a Potter fan?

My only issue is that there was a long queue for the special effects photos and so they weren't letting people choose which house robes they could wear for the broomstick shot and I got the wrong one.

DrSbaitso · 31/03/2022 15:20

Weirdly, it actually tastes exactly how I always imagined Butterbeer to taste, except not quite as thick.

Haha! I thought it tasted like cream soda done very, very right!

Root beer is disgusting!

NewbieDivergent · 31/03/2022 15:35

Yes I'm a chronic over thinker,my daughter knows nothing as is to be a surprise,will go and enjoy,and definitely will get that t shirt @Comvit 😂
