"Work stack" - FFS

CovidCanDoOne123 · 30/03/2022 19:57

So in addition to the likes of 'reach out', 'align'; 'ducks in a row', 'going forward' etc etc etc...we now have 'work stack' instead of workload.

Losing the will to live.

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

Uptick.

I bloody hate 'uptick'. What's wrong with increase?
Also, the new one I keep hearing is, 'it's in our gift' as in, 'its in our gift to be able to do this for them'. What's wrong with ' we are able to...'??

@HestersSamplerofCarrots

‘The deck’ 😡
Aaaaarrrgh! I have been using this word for 50 years! It is not new or corporate speak! artofpresentations.com/what-is-a-slide-deck/

It's always been like that, Dilbert was inspired by 70s office culture, some people just like to use fancy words.
Doesn't stop it being ridiculous though.
At least "human resources"!! Is being phased out in favour of "people" team though, that was the one that got me the most, they were not even trying to hide that they treat us as a resource to be used.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/03/2022 22:19

I'm a bit sad that "suck it and see" seems to have disappeared. Always made me think of an amateur porno video.

do you really mean "people team"? That just sounds wrong.

Why did they stop using "personnel"?

gracedentssketty · 30/03/2022 22:24

My boss uses cascade, link in and pull through a lot. Pisses me right off

Jenjenn · 30/03/2022 22:24

Oh god, we have nearly all of these Grin we flag, we build on foundations, we link our stakeholders and our audiences. I have sold my soul and don't even bat an eyelid. However I refuse to huddle. Wtf, it sounds like cuddle and isn't it something that penguins do?

MrsToothyBitch · 30/03/2022 22:27

"Work stack" to me is an actual, physical pile of work related paper I need to get through. My "work load" may involve but is not wholly made up of said stack. The phrases are not interchangeable to me. I'm not very corporate Blush

ChimChimeny · 30/03/2022 22:28

@IlFaitBeau

Today I got: “thought experiment”. I’ve also got “idea shower”, and the new inexplicable tendency to use the word “pop”.

“Pop it in an email”
“Something to make the ideas pop”.

Kill me please.

I got an email yesterday which opened with 'what's popping with this...'

It's just so random! The woman who wrote it is 26 so maybe I'm just too old these days

MrsToothyBitch · 30/03/2022 22:31

"Thought experiment" sounds a bit sinister!

Kirstos1 · 30/03/2022 22:31

'I'm part of the recruitment space'

So you're on the recruitment team then?

Ilovemypyjamas2021 · 30/03/2022 22:33

@neverbeenskiing
"Reach out" still gives me the rage, even though it's become so commonplace now. I will never not be irritated by it, no matter how many times I hear it. "Can you reach out to Helen from HR and..." No!!! Why?? I will happily call her, or I will email her, or I will walk across the corridor and have a chat with her, but unless she's dangling from a fucking window ledge or something why would I need to "reach out"?? Ugh.

😂

HadEnoughOfBears · 30/03/2022 22:34

Here's one: my husband and his wanky banker colleagues talk about "jamming the toast"

Yep. "Let's jam the toast"

I think it means adding something extra, going the extra mile type of thing.

🤮🤮

Babyroobs · 30/03/2022 22:37

My previous boss was always " fleshing out an email " to send us regarding some change or other. Used to make me cringe.

L0stinCyberspace · 30/03/2022 22:40

Has anyone just burst their shite laughing when management said this?

Blea · 30/03/2022 22:40

WHat's wring with gaunt forward? What would people use instead? Sounds too vague and distant. Going forward means just 'from here on' but flows better?

Blea · 30/03/2022 22:41

*What's wring with going forward.

Blea · 30/03/2022 22:41

I give up. What's wrong with my typing?

MasterBeth · 30/03/2022 22:41

@MrsToothyBitch

"Thought experiment" sounds a bit sinister!
A thought experiment is a hypothetical situation in which a hypothesis, theory, or principle is laid out for the purpose of thinking through its consequences. Johann Witt-Hansen established that Hans Christian Ørsted was the first to use the German term Gedankenexperiment (lit. thought experiment) circa 1812.

Another perfectly legitimate longstanding word.

onemorerose · 30/03/2022 22:41

Visibility of something or other that they’ve introduced but have no idea how to manage!

Blea · 30/03/2022 22:42

'In the future' sounds too vague. I should go to sleep.

BoyGirlDogCatMouseCheez · 30/03/2022 22:42

I read the whole thread to see if anyone was going to speak to speaking to, but no one spoke to it yet, so I can speak to that.

JuteWeaver · 30/03/2022 22:42

How I miss the 80s. No acronyms and none of this naff corporate speak.

SenecaFallsRedux · 30/03/2022 22:42

I've been using PowerPoint since the beginning of PowerPoint so I know what a deck is, but it's only recently that I have encountered people using it in conversation, as in "I'll send you my deck."

I'm in the US. "Touch base" is from baseball, although its meaning has expanded over the years to mean any contact. I like it because I like baseball. You have sports sayings in the UK as well, right? "Off his own bat" for example comes from cricket, I think.

RedScarfJamjar · 30/03/2022 22:42

I've been "on boarding" of late (haven't had a formal interview for over 20 years) and I've been horrified by the level of Bollocks presented as normal work speak.

Most places I've interviewed have shared my view that most acronyms, bullshit bingo phrases and other such nonsense are...entirely that.

Fucking "exit interviews"...FML
