"Work stack" - FFS

377 replies

CovidCanDoOne123 · 30/03/2022 19:57

So in addition to the likes of 'reach out', 'align'; 'ducks in a row', 'going forward' etc etc etc...we now have 'work stack' instead of workload.

Losing the will to live.

Ps no AIBU. The use of 'work stack' is unreasonable.

@TulipsGarden

I refuse to use all of these phrases. I'll never get promoted (at my current company) but I will retain my soul.
THIS!
MasterBeth · 30/03/2022 21:13

@ZenNudist

Deck is used a lot by m&a types, who are invariably male.

I have never used work stack, although my current stack is high and in danger of toppling.

I think mental load has become overused on mumsnet. It seems to be one of those things that people add to a list to justify what they actually do (along with "life admin")

What’s M&A? Impenetrable jargon, that’s what.
SockFluffInTheBath · 30/03/2022 21:13

@chimichangaz

I saw a meme some years ago which describe FIFO as Fit In or Fuck Off.

Or did you all know that one anyway?.......

🤣
yellowsuninthesky · 30/03/2022 21:13

@OzziePopPop

I have ducks (real ones, around 20 or so) living in my back garden. I’ve tried all sorts to get them ‘in a row’. Best I can do is in a line, following each other and that involved a handful of their favourite split peas. Off topic maybe but just how does one get their ducks in a row, are mine faulty?
Grin

My DH says it comes from fairgrounds when you shoot ducks. You line them all up to shoot them (not real ducks).

melissasummerfield · 30/03/2022 21:13

@somethingischasingme

My husband started making them up at work and seeing which ones took off. His favourite is 'it's a dinosaurs picnic' which is now used to describe when things are going wrong!
I really hope this is true Grin

i am absolutely going to use dinosaur picnic the next time something goes tits up Grin

ClemDanFango · 30/03/2022 21:14

Bull shit bingo!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/03/2022 21:15

Different bollocks existed 20 years ago. “Unpacking the envelope” was one I first heard with my current employer, when I joined 19 years ago.

Discwriter · 30/03/2022 21:15

Bob Mortimer does these little videos of 'Train Guy' on IG. So spot on with the bullshit! I unfortunately do use many, many of the phrases mentioned above.

Myee · 30/03/2022 21:18

I was a senior manager in a former life. If anyone in my presence used anything other than ordinary talk, they would get "The Glare" and a prompt translation into "English" from me.

I would say something like... "Put simply, what I believe Fred is trying to say is.... that right Fred? thanks"

I'd say all this rubbish talk is associated with geeks and IT/software set ups and originated in the US, which we inevitably followed.. ahem. Admittedly my job wasn't one of them, but it was creeping in!

PebbleMillAtOne · 30/03/2022 21:18

They need the often used under the breath and sometimes out loud words of … fuck off

PoshPyjamas · 30/03/2022 21:19

Am I missing something re brainstorm

About 20 years ago brainstorm was briefly thought to be offensive to people with Epilepsy. Then the British Epilepsy Society basically said words to the effect of 'Nobody asked us' and 'Don't be daft'. At which point anyone who bothered to look a bit deeper into it resumed with using the original term.

I am sure some people just accepted that it was 'offensive' without questioning it though.

MovingOnNowPlease · 30/03/2022 21:21

'Learnings' and 'trainings' can just fuck off.

Bluetrews25 · 30/03/2022 21:21

If anyone ever asked me how much I have on my pad (I'm female) I'd be proper Hmm unless they were my gynaecologist. Does anyone ever say that to a woman, like, really?!?!
Makes me glad I work with the elderly who largely have dementia, they talk a lot more sense and a lot less bollocks!

NancyNC2022 · 30/03/2022 21:22

One of the absolute joys of being on maternity leave is not having to listen to this utter bullshit.

balalake · 30/03/2022 21:23

OP, another phrase that should be consigned to history, along with deep dive, and a few others.

Apart from calling it out generally, how about saying it's unkind to those for whom English is not their first language.

SheepHeap · 30/03/2022 21:25

Brainstorm is thought by some to be un-PC because it brings to mind a mental health condition or autistic meltdown (as in an actual storm in your brain).

I hate this current trend to try and retrofit offence to normal words and phrases that have nothing to do with the thing that people are saying leads to offence, or which relies on long forgotten etymological origins to create the stated offence. I think it is seriously damaging, because there seems to be no willingness to challenge these statements or to say that they are wrong or unreasonable or that they purported offence (even if real) is ridiculous or should be regarded as meaning that the thing is actually offensive. It appears that the mere fact that someone says that someone somewhere might take offence seems to be enough to have people falling over themselves to remove useful language. It is seriously damaging to individuals mental health and the ability to build teams which rely on good communication, where people have to try and keep up with an ever shifting lexicon of acceptable and frowned upon words. People just stop wanting to speak at all.

QuinkWashable · 30/03/2022 21:25

It’s been a while since I learned, but in my mind a stack is LIFO by definition - something FIFO is a queue surely?

Yep - although, I contend that that it's a stack of pez in a dispenser, not a queue :)

But that's just to mess with people.

Makeitsoso · 30/03/2022 21:25

@Madmaxxy

I used to work somewhere where they referred to your workload as 'what you have on your pad' i.e. 'have you got too much on your pad'?' 'whats on your pad today'? Drove me nuts!! YANBU
That would make me think of sanitary towels Confused
Annette32123 · 30/03/2022 21:26

@Topbird29

I think idea shower is a new way of saying brain storm - that phrase was thought to be un PC. Not saying the alternatives are better.
How is brain storm not PC? Is it excluding the brainless? Or is it triggering for those with a fear of bad weather?
ChopinBoard · 30/03/2022 21:28

"Touch base" and "bring [something] to life" make me want to hurl my guts and commit violence respectively

AryaStarkWolf · 30/03/2022 21:29

1st hearing that one 😅

ChopinBoard · 30/03/2022 21:30

@SheepHeap agree. I listened to a podcast earlier and one of the hosts told herself off for using the term "master bedroom" because slavery

Ilovemypyjamas2021 · 30/03/2022 21:32

@SpiderinaWingMirror
Deck.
Isn't it just a PP presentation? When did it become a deck? And why?
And why the fuck is everything super instead of very?
"I've been super busy prepping the slide deck"
Huh?

Yes what is this? 😂It keeps popping up on emails & meeting requests from PM’s in our company. Had never heard of it until about a month ago…

Thankyoupeter · 30/03/2022 21:33

@Shortpoet

A scrum isn’t a meeting, it’s a framework for project delivery. It might look like a meeting (or a series of meetings) though!
Oh I have sat round a meeting table more than once and been told we are having a scrum down! Reading your post has made me realise that someone has probably heard it being used properly but not realised what it meant and thought it was the new buzz word 🤣.
LBFseBrom · 30/03/2022 21:35

I haven't yet seen 'work stack' but think it looks and sounds pretty strange.

The other words and phrases you mentioned are in common usage in real life, not specifically a Mumsnet thing.
